Explicit instruction and relational teaching

Explicit instruction and relational teaching

The RHAC 5 Principles of Teaching and Learning guide teaching and learning from PreK to Year 12. Our RHAC community would be aware that our focus this year is on our principle of Relational Teaching. This complements our work on Explicit Instruction and High Expectations in our classrooms.

As a parent, you want your child to feel confident, supported, and successful in school. These two key teaching approaches - from our Teaching and Learning Principles - can make a big difference: explicit instruction and relational teaching .

Explicit instruction means the teacher clearly explains what students need to learn, step by step, and provides guided practice along the way. This helps children build strong academic skills, especially when they’re learning something new or challenging. Relational teaching focuses on the connection between teacher and student—creating a warm, respectful, and encouraging classroom where students feel safe to take risks and grow. When teachers use both methods, students not only understand their work better but also feel seen, supported, and motivated to do their best.

Part of our role is to engage with our Junior and Senior School teachers and leaders to ensure that our theoretical understanding of these principles is put into practice. When we walk by classrooms and take a casual peek in the windows, or when we visit a classroom to observe a lesson or engage with the students, we see the following:

  • Students who are aware of the focus and purpose of their lesson
  • Teachers delivering structured, clear and direct instructions which break down content into manageable chunks
  • Opportunities for students to ask questions and to practise their newly acquired skills
  • Checking for understanding
  • A calm and kind classroom environment where students are valued and cared for by their teachers

This week in the Junior School , I walked into a Kindergarten drama lesson where students were moving around the classroom using the gait and mannerisms of designated animals. There was a mixture of joy and excitement in the room. On the board, the drama teacher had written the learning intention of the lesson and students clearly understood that the lesson provided students with the opportunity to practise acting like different people and animals. They knew they would be successful in the lesson if they could use their bodies and voices to behave like different things. I arrived when they were being bunnies and left as they were pretending to be teenagers which was very sweet.

In Year 3 , I observed a class where students were participating in a poetry lesson and learning new vocabulary regarding poetry. The teacher carefully and clearly explained the expectations for each step of the lesson; reviewing understanding as she went. Students were actively engaged in the lesson as they chorally read A.A. Milne’s “Us Two”, the poem they were learning about. This poem describes the special bond between Christopher Robin and Pooh and it was lovely to watch as students rewrote this poem to describe a special bond they had with someone important to them. It was also a pleasure to have three visitors from the class later in the week who came to read their poems to me.

Part of explicit teaching is giving students the opportunity to participate in excursions that further their understanding of the content they are being taught in class. This week Year 4 visited the National Maritime Museum and Year 1 enjoyed learning more about life on a farm in the 19th century when they visited Rouse Hill Estate. Year 12 Sports, Lifestyle and Recreation students applied their knowledge of the recreation industry and physical activity through a class visit to Anytime Fitness gym in the local area. Our English and Music students have also been given the opportunity to engage with performances that enhance their understanding of these subject areas. Spending time with students outside of the classroom is something which is also valuable in developing important relational connections.

In the Senior School we have been able to observe Explicit Instruction in action in both practical and theory-based subjects. In visiting the new Senior School building and its wonderful facilities, I have witnessed students being taught Visual Arts and Wood Technology using the ‘I Do, We Do, You Do’ method. In these classrooms, teachers model the content or skill explicitly and then move on to working collaboratively with students to ensure the skill or content has been understood. In the final stage, students are able to demonstrate their understanding by using the skill or reflecting knowledge of the content independently. A daily review in the following lesson ensures that the teacher has a clear picture of who requires additional support and when it is appropriate to move on to the subsequent content.

Our teachers continue to develop their skills and knowledge of explicit instruction, relational teaching, effective feedback, high expectations and data informed practice. This is achieved through Professional Learning days such as the one we started the term with, individual targeted professional development, teaching observations, and staff research projects.

Wishing all of our mothers and maternal role models a lovely Sunday ahead.

From the Scriptures

Honour those who are deserving of respect

Honour those who are deserving of respect

Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour..

Romans 13:7

Last week I wrote about the sacrifice of the ANZACs. This week we held a commemorative ANZAC service with guest speaker Chaplain Steve Wakeford, an excellent massage about the sacrifice men and women made during both world wars as he shared from John 15:13 ‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends’. He reminded us of Jesus’ sacrifice that was for his enemies. What a contrast. We also enjoyed a stunning performance of ‘Amazing Grace’ by our Symphony wind ensemble and ‘The Lords Prayer’ sung by RHACsody choir.

This week we reflect on the legacy of the ANZACs, we are reminded of the profound sacrifices made by those who have served in the armed forces. Romans 13:7 calls us to honour those who are deserving of respect, and this includes the brave men and women who have laid down their lives and their comforts for the safety and freedom of others.

Honouring the ANZACs is not merely about remembering their sacrifices; it is about recognizing the values they embodied—courage, commitment, and selflessness. They stood in the face of danger, motivated by a desire to protect their families, their friends, and their country. As believers, we are called to honour such sacrifice by acknowledging their service and the impact it has had on our lives today.

In our daily lives, let us take the time to express our gratitude for those who serve, both past and present. This can be as simple as sharing stories of their bravery, participating in commemorative events, or offering a prayer of thanks for their dedication. We can also honour their memory by living lives that reflect the values they fought for—values of peace, freedom, and love for our neighbour.

As we remember the ANZACs, let us fulfill our duty to honour them, not just in words, but in actions that promote the very freedom they defended. May we strive to uphold their legacy by living with courage and compassion in our own lives.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the sacrifices made by the ANZACs and all who have served in the military. Help us to honour their memory by living lives of courage and service. May we never forget the price of freedom and strive to reflect the values they fought for. Amen.

Year 8 VA Talent & Passion Day

Year 8 VA Talent & Passion Day

On 8th May, a selected group of very talented students participated in a Visual Arts Talent & Passion Day split into two sessions.

The first session was Photography. Various glass vials were filled with water, and students chose an object to place behind the vessel, to be viewed from the opposing side. This distorts the objects. The students were introduced to and explored various photography skills to capture the distorted image and create a contemporary artwork. These images were printed and framed.

The second session was spent exploring watercolour painting techniques and applying these techniques to a painting of their photograph.

Every student worked with passion, positivity and joy. It was a wonderful day. I am so very proud of their completed artworks.

Junior School Cross Country
It was a spectacular day weather wise and the conditions were perfect for the students to run. We are so blessed with our College grounds, giving students the opportunities to run on the perfectly manicured ovals and through the bush of The Grove .

Thank you to staff for cheering on the students, to our parent helpers on the day and to everyone who came and supported their children. It was wonderful to see students striving towards individual goals they had set and talked through in their PE lessons. Every student is to be congratulated on such a fantastic effort.

Congratulations to the following students who will be representing RHAC at the Hills Zone Sports Association (HZSA) Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday 20th May at The International Equestrian Centre. We wish you the best of luck!

Updated: Stage 3 girls' uniform

It was announced in our College newsletter (October 2024) regarding changes to the Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) girls’ uniform. The skirt and blouse can be worn in both winter and summer and ultimately will replace the summer and winter tunics. While the skirt is the same as the secondary school skirt, the blouse has been especially designed for the Junior School.

There will be a two year period (2025-2026) where families can opt for their children to wear the existing uniform or to change to the new uniform.

Term 2 Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines

This calendar outlines the nomination (Nom), trial and competition dates for the RHAC Senior School representative sporting pathways (HZSA > AICES > CIS > NSW All Schools > SSA). As this is a representative pathway, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies in order for nominations to be accepted. If this is the case, further information will be emailed to students by the Head of Student Opportunities. Students trialling for OPEN or U18/19 teams must, at a minimum, be in Year 9 (Students in Year 9 MUST have extensive representative experience).

Updated: Process of notifying the College of your child's absence

Updated: Process of notifying the College of your child's absence

Effective from Term 3 , parents will no longer need to email the College when their child will be absent. Instead, parents/carers are to wait for and respond to the absence notifications that are sent via the College mobile app.

Parents/carers are already receiving absence notifications via the College mobile app at approximately 9:30am each morning where they are asked to submit a reason for their child/s absence.

Although this process has been in place for some time, we would like to streamline the process further. Currently, parents are still being asked to email [email protected] or [email protected] to report known absences. This process will be phased out.

To allow families time to adjust, we will continue accepting absence emails for the remainder of Term 2 . We encourage families to download the College app using the links below.

Hills Relay for Life - Sat 17 - Sun 18 May

Cancer Council's Hills Relay For Life is coming up in Week 3 this term on Saturday, 17th of May to Sunday, 18th of May , and, as always, our RHAC community is getting involved to help fight against cancer.

Thanks to a generous donation from Coca-Cola CCEP and our teachers, students and RHAC community, we’ve raised nearly $12,500 so far ! Our goal for this year is $18,000 and we’re almost at the finish line. So far we’ve helped fund 7,795 kids with a Sunsmart education, 191 calls to trained cancer professionals, 103 days of a PhD student's world-class research and have raised the 3rd most amount of money at the Hills Relay!

The colouring-in competition , featuring our RHAC Relay Mascot, Ralph, has kicked off in Junior School, and we have received a lot of wonderful entries already. Our Junior School Leaders are preparing to choose and announce the winners in Week 4, with Coca-Cola donated prizes waiting to be awarded.

Coming up in Senior School next week, we are holding a fundraising BBQ , with a big thank you to Coca-Cola CCEP and Woolworths The Ponds for their donations of sausages, bread and soft drinks. We also have a jelly bean guessing competition starting this week, where the winner will get to take home the entire jar of jellybeans!

If you want to join us in this fight against cancer, the Relay will be held in Hills Showground from 9:00am Saturday, 17th May to 9:00am on Sunday, 18th May. Our Senior School Drumline is opening the event again this year and as always our RHAC stand will be selling hot cup noodles and soft drinks, thanks to the generous donation from our RHAC P&F Association and Coca-Cola CCEP.

If you would like to join us on the day, or show your support as we walk the Relay For Life, you can visit the RHAC Community Relay For Life page via the link below.

ICAS 2025 for Junior and Senior School students

ICAS 2025 for Junior and Senior School students

We are delighted to inform you that Rouse Hill Anglican College will be participating in the world-renowned ICAS competition this year.

What is ICAS?

ICAS is an online academic competition that is designed to assess students’ higher order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies. Each assessment celebrates students’ accomplishments by providing opportunities for recognition and development. Every student who participates will receive a printed certificate and an online results report. Top performers will be eligible for medals.

How to participate in ICAS

If you wish for your child to participate in ICAS this year, please:

  1. Read about ICAS subjects and prices HERE
  2. Read the terms and conditions HERE
  3. Go to Parent Portal to purchase tests HERE
  4. Enter our school’s access code – NNB002
  5. Enter your child’s details, select the tests you would like to purchase, then proceed to payment.

Please note that the ICAS tests shown for selection are at the school’s discretion.

After payment is made via the Parent Payment System, you will receive an order confirmation email, please keep this for your records. The Parent Payment System and registrations for ICAS 2025 will close on Monday the 28th of July. ICAS will be held in Term 3 from the 4th - 29th of August.

ICAS results and certificates

All assessments will be conducted online, at school. We will notify you of the date(s) that we will run ICAS assessments, and when your child’s ICAS results are ready. Your child’s ICAS certificates will be delivered to school. Once we have received them, we will present them to your child to bring home. The back of the certificate will show your child’s ICAS results and the login details, “TAP ID and Pin”. - Use these to enter the Results Portal orti.icasassessments.com/ortiStudent .

Junior School Parents – Please note that the assessments will take place outside of school hours beginning at 8am on school grounds so as to not interrupt the regular classroom day.

Family Support Meals

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal , or by donating as little as $10.00 by clicking the TryBooking link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices/banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
