The recent Junior School and Senior School camps were a wonderful experience. They helped students to build their confidence in unfamiliar environments by engaging them in group activities that develop their ability to connect with others and think laterally. Significantly, they did this without a device in front of their faces!
I thoroughly enjoyed being with Year 9 at their camp this week. Seeing energised and engaged students participating and relating positively to each other was very encouraging.
Relational teaching is one RHAC’s 5 Teaching and Learning Principles . Camps are a fabulous way for students to see their teachers in a different context and build meaningful relationships with them. Seeing several students warmly share an experience or a joke with their teachers demonstrated the meaningful, positive connections our students have with their teachers. I even managed to get on the ground and participate in a push-up challenge! My ageing muscles and bones seemed to cope with the experience.
I’m sure when our parents reflect on their experiences at school, they may struggle to remember Shakespearean quotes or maths formulas. However, they will recall the relationships they formed and how their personal interactions contributed to a better understanding of themselves and others.
