A message from Principal Hartley

Our annual, structured personal parent/teacher meetings are not far away. You should have already received an email explaining how to book a meeting.

I prefer to refer to these appointments as meetings rather than interviews, because their primary purpose is to build a positive, cooperative parent/teacher relationship. When you meet with teachers they will:

  • Briefly explain how your son or daughter is managing academically so far this year. They may also share any observations or concerns they have about your child’s social and emotional needs.
  • Outline some of the key content and skills your son or daughter will be covering in class for the rest of the year.
  • Explain any upcoming activities, assessment tasks or expectations.
  • Give you an opportunity to share information about your child that will assist the teacher to make reasonable adjustments, if needed, to help your child learn effectively.

Some parents/carers may have specific questions which they are very welcome to ask.

Occasionally, parents/carers ask why these structured, formalised meetings are not offered in the second half of the year. RHAC prefers to establish a positive parent/teacher relationship earlier in the year so that parents/carers will feel comfortable to write to their child's teacher at any point during the year should they have a question, need or concern. The Parent and Carer Handbook has a helpful explanation on how parents/carers can go about keeping in contact with teachers. Teachers may respond by email or potentially arrange a suitable time for a phone conversation to work through issues or concerns.

A message from Mrs Bromley

Senior School Parent-Teacher meetings commence next week and provide an opportunity for our families and students to join in conversations about the learning that is happening in the classroom. At these meetings, our teachers are able to share their observations and discuss strategies to assist students in reaching their potential and achieve their personal best.

Connecting with parents and students is part of ‘relational teaching’ which is one of the 5 Teaching and Learning principles outlined on our website:

RHAC is committed to professional teacher/student relationships. This involves creating a positive environment of routines and expectations. Teachers seek to be thoughtful, kind and encouraging so that students will have the confidence to learn and achieve. Our teachers are committed to working warmly with parents in the best interests of all students.

The importance of this approach is also reflected in AITSL’s professional standards for teachers, two of which are, ‘Know students and how they learn’ and ‘Engage professionally with parents/carers and the community’.

Personally, I have always enjoyed this yearly event and have found these meetings to be positive opportunities to engage with our families and to gain insight into other dimensions of our students’ lives. Whilst the business of discussing learning is a serious one, it has always been a joyful experience to share anecdotes and oftentimes, put ‘faces to the names’ at these meetings.

Thank you for investing the time in partnering with us; we look forward to seeing you all on Monday evening or on Wednesday.

Have a great weekend!

A message from Dr Chalwell

A message from Dr Chalwell

Earlier this year, the Grattan Institute released The Reading Guarantee: How to give every child the best chance of success, their report on reading instruction. In the report overview, the authors state that:

The evidence is clear: there should be a strong focus on phonics-based decoding skills in the early years. Students also need a knowledge-rich curriculum to build the vocabulary and background knowledge that are critical for successful reading comprehension all through school. And schools need to track student progress, so they can intervene early to help struggling students to catch-up.

This is very encouraging for the Junior School as it captures the areas we are focusing on in literacy: phonics-cased decoding skills, a knowledge-rich curriculum, tracking student progress for interventions. The report recommends six key steps to improve reading for all school students. While some of them are not applicable to the College, there is a lot to celebrate here as well as to motivate us to continue the work we are doing.

Recommendation 1: Commit to at least 90% of students becoming proficient readers.

While this recommendation is targeting the government sector rather than individual schools, we are committed to ensuring that we provide the necessary support to help our students become proficient readers.

Recommendation 2: Give teachers and school leaders specific guidelines on how to teach reading according to the evidence and Recommendation 5: Ensure teachers have the knowledge and skills they need to teach reading well.

I have put these two recommendations together as understanding the evidence and ensuring that teachers have the knowledge and skills required go hand in hand. This is an ongoing focus of professional learning in the Junior School. Our teachers receive both external and internal training best practice for reading instruction. Our commitment to the RHAC five principles of teaching and learning : explicit instruction, high expectations, effective feedback, data informed practice, relational teaching, are evidence-based teaching practices that have a positive impact on student learning. Our Head of Learning, Mrs Vlok, works closely with teachers to support excellence in reading instruction, and our teachers are committed to this area of the curriculum.

Recommendation 3: Ensure schools have the high-quality curriculum materials and assessments teachers need to teach reading well.

Our use of the InitiaLit program for Kindergarten to Year 2, and Spelling Mastery for Years 3 to 6 are two high-quality programs that enhance our reading instruction. As recommended in the report, we have invested in decodable readers for early reading instruction. I am thankful for the commitment Junior School teachers have to working collaboratively as they develop high quality curriculum materials and assessments to support literacy learning. In addition, the work we are doing on developing knowledge-rich teaching programs in History, Geography and Science will continue as we progress through the NSW Curriculum Reform timeline. We use ongoing formal and informal assessment to support student learning. It is also important to note the work of our library staff as they work on growing our library book collection and encourage students to discover the joy of reading.

Recommendation 4: Require schools to do universal screening of reading skills and help struggling students to catch up.

We use ongoing screening of reading skills, both at the beginning of the year assessments and throughout the year. We are also focusing our learning support where the data indicates is needed. This includes in class support, and small group and individual interventions.

Recommendation 6: Encourage best practice through closer monitoring and strengthened school performance reviews.

While this recommendation focuses on a broader scope than our College, we already use an inhouse screening of phonics and reading fluency.

It is exciting to read a report like this and to acknowledge the work that we are already doing to ensure that every student is provided with the instruction they need to learn to read.

From the Scriptures

Isaiah 53

Isaiah 53

At Bible college, there was one particular phrase that caught my attention and has stuck with me as a constant reminder of how to understand the Bible; “In the Old Testament, the New Testament is concealed, in the New Testament, the Old Testament is revealed.”

Today’s passage, I believe, is a testament to that phrase. It was written several hundred years before Jesus’ birth, and yet, it accurately predicts what Jesus will go through to fulfill God’s promise and take our place.

Isaiah 53 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

4 Surely, he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes [ c ] his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,
he will see the light of life ] and be satisfied ] ;
by his knowledge
] my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great
]
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Year 10 STEM iFly Downunder Excursion

Year 10 STEM iFly Downunder Excursion

Year 10 STEM students had the opportunity to experience near weightlessness at iFly Downunder, Penrith, on 19th March. The excursion was planned to link in with the current project of Design for Space, how air resistance works, a crash course on Newton’s Laws and how that all needs to be taken into account for the fight against zero gravity in space.

iFly had some amazing performances in store for us, showcasing the current talent that they have, breaking world records and achieving some amazing results. All students had an absolute joyous time at iFly and we thank them for their time and expertise to ensure that all students were safe and able to enjoy the flight through indoor skydiving.

Year 9 PASS guided tour of the SCG and Allianz Stadium

Year 9 PASS guided tour of the SCG and Allianz Stadium

On Wednesday 20th March, Year 9 PASS students travelled into Moore Park for a guided tour of the Sydney Cricket Ground and Allianz Stadium. The tour gave students a behind the scenes look at some of the most iconic venues in Australian sport including a chance to sit in the Australian Cricket changerooms and share the same seats that have been sat in by legends like Sir Donald Bradman, Steve Waugh and more recently, Steven Smith and David Warner, all while hearing stories about the history of the stadium – English cricketing sides demanding separate changeroom so that the upper class didn’t have to spend time with the lower class from the same team and gentleman reserving seats in the members areas and then avoiding eye contact with as the ladies entered so that they didn’t have to give up their seats as was the etiquette at the time.

We then headed over to Allianz Stadium and got to experience the ‘old’ verses ‘new’ in this state-of-the-art stadium. Students got to view the new changerooms equipped with hot and cold baths for recovery, video rooms and indoor training facilities. Some of our students got to experience the perspective of Ray Warren and Trent Robinson in the media and coaches’ boxes and then in an empty stadium let out an ‘RHAC’ chant that echoed through the grounds. This tour provided students with a unique insight into the history of Australian sport and the significance of these venues and their part in shaping Australia’ sporting identity.

Senior School Music Camp

Senior School Music Camp

Over 110 students in Years 7-12 attended the annual Senior School Music Camp early this month. This year’s camp was held at Camp Kedron and involved members of the Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Senior Vocal Group and Giocoso Strings. Our students spent focused time in rehearsals, tutorials and sectionals with their conductors, tutors and student leaders to make significant progress on their current pieces. Having this dedicated time to play music together also enabled each of the groups to develop their cohesiveness as an ensemble.

During their well-earned breaks, students had the chance to take part in activities run by the Camp Kedron staff, including archery and indoor rock climbing. Our Year 12 students also organised two exciting back-to-back nights of trivia and games, which were well-received and enjoyed by the younger students, building a stronger sense of community amongst our musicians.

The camp concluded with a concert on Wednesday afternoon, where students showcased their hard work by performing for their parents at the campsite. This performance was not only a highlight for the students but also for the parents who attended, offering them a glimpse into the achievements and progress made during the camp.

The success of this year’s Music Camp was due, in no small part, to the teachers who gave up their time to attend the camp. I am grateful to Mrs Ahn, Mrs Taylor, Mrs Smith and Mr Ng for taking rehearsals, getting involved in the camp activities, caring for our students and helping the camp run smoothly. Our music students are also to be congratulated on their dedication and positive attitude which enabled everyone to get the most out of camp. Thank you also to the parents for allowing your child to participate in this enriching musical experience.

We are looking forward to seeing the fruit of this time spent together in the wonderful music performances this year, including the TASC Choral Festival, the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival and our Music Ensembles Showcases coming up in Term 2.

In this week's sports news: HZSA Touch Football Gala Day and Hills Zone interschool competition results.

HZSA Touch Football Gala Day

On Thursday 21st March, our Stage 3 touch teams competed at the HZSA Touch Football Gala Day. Both the boys and girls teams finish top of their pools to cross over and play 2nd in the other pool.

Unfortunately, the girls went down to Hills Adventist, which saw them play Hills Grammar for third place. The girls won this game by 1 point. The girls did a great job and improved their skills as the day went on. They showed great team spirit and hustle which saw them advance the ball down the field and save numerous points.

The boys won their crossover game which took them to the final against Redfield College. The boys wasted no time getting to work, scoring the first try within minutes of the start. The boys were phenomenal on offence and showed great skill and composure. They backed each other up the entire game, making them an unstoppable force. As equally impressive was their defence, always covering gaps and supporting their team to get the touch. The boys are to be congratulated on their 7 – 2 win, making them clear winners of the tournament.

Thank you to Mr Leach who coached the girls team and Mr Islaub for taking the boys. Their encouragement and guidance on the day was exceptional and a big part of our outstanding final placings.

Harmony Day 2024 - Tuesday 4 June

Harmony Day 2024 - Tuesday 4 June

Harmony Day is about inclusiveness, diversity, respect and belonging for all, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core values. It's a great way to celebrate the richness of culture and life experience we all bring, and the joy of being united under a loving God, that has made us all in His image.

With a calendar full of opportunities for parents to join in activities at school in Term 1, the Junior School will be celebrating Harmony Day on Tuesday, 4th June (Term 2, Week 6) .

Last year, our students participated in parent-led activities from Greece, Russia, India and Fiji. It would be wonderful to have more activities from a range of cultural backgrounds to help our students understand more about the diverse backgrounds in our Junior School.

If you would like to teach or lead a cultural activity, either by yourself or with a group of parents from the College community, please click the link below to fill out a short form by Tuesday, 14th May (Term 2, Week 3). After you have filled in this form, we will send you a document regarding volunteering at the school.

Please note that the activities will run for about 10 -15 minutes (10 minutes for K-2; 15 minutes for Years 3-6).

Some ideas:

  • arts and crafts
  • dance
  • musical performance
  • showing and explaining different cultural items
  • story reading (bilingual books)
  • games from around the world
  • share information about culture
  • teach words/phrases (eg. hello, goodbye, numbers and basic conversation)

Thank you for your consideration of leading a cultural activity and/or performing in our Junior School Harmony Day event.

Private Music Lessons

All Private Music lessons have commended this week and I would like to thank our students, parents and tutors, as it took a little while for our new students and tutors had to navigate their way to their first lesson. If you have signed up to have lessons, you should have been contacted by your tutor sometime this week with the lesson times. Please let Mrs Neralie Want know if you have not heard from your tutor [email protected]

Also, we are currently dealing with a large number of applications so if you have sent your applications in the last week or so, there will be some delay in our response. We apologise for this delay and will get back to you as soon as possible. Please contact Mrs Want if you have not heard back from us by the end of this week. If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.

Also, you should have received your instrument if you have applied to hire an instrument.

Again, if you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]

Ensemble Fees

We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.

It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year of music making with your children this year.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles (with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir in the Junior School).

Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year of music making with your children this year.

Parent/Teacher Interviews (25th & 27th March) and KT OOSH service

Parent/Teacher Interviews (25th & 27th March) and KT OOSH service

A reminder to all families that there will be no formal classes for students on Wednesday 27 March - this is to be treated as a pupil free day.

  • Monday, 25 March – Parent/Teacher evening for Senior School (Years 7-12) parents.
  • Wednesday, 27 March – Parent/Teacher day and evening. This is a full day of meetings, which will stretch into the evening. All students (Pre-K to Year 12) will not come to school on this day.

Junior School students should not attend interviews with their parents/carers and it is kindly requested that you arrange supervision for your child/ren whilst you are attending your interview. Refer to the KT OOSH all-day vacation care service below for Wednesday, 27th March.

Senior School students, as part of the conversations, will be asked to provide an overview of their progress and the plans for the remainder of the course. As such, it is expected that students will be in attendance with their parents/carers for the interviews.

KT OOSH - Wednesday, 27th March (Junior School only)

KT OOSH will be running an all-day Vacation Care Program to support Families with care requirements for the day from 6:45am – 6.00pm.

Children will be challenging their inner creativity by conducting Science Experiments and Sensory Challenges along with making Play Dough and Slime!  There will also be plenty of time to play sporting games and catch up with their friends.
As KT OOSH Services is a Licensed Childcare Provider and we are attached to the Centrelink Child Care Benefit Scheme, all students attending the program MUST be fully enrolled with the service prior to attending.

If you are currently enrolled with KT OOSH then all you need to do is simply log into your OWNA APP and book the Vacation Care session Wednesday 27th of March 2024.

If you wish to enrol with KT OOSH so you are able to attend this Pupil Free Day and/or the upcoming School Holidays then please go our website ktoosh.com.au and register now via the OWNA widget then forward an email to [email protected]
New students enrolling MUST be fully enrolled no later than Sunday 24th March 2024.

A message from the RHAC P&F

A message from the RHAC P&F

Thank you to those that attended the P&F AGM on Wednesday evening to learn more about the P&F activities for last year, and what’s to come for the year ahead.

We warmly thank outgoing 2023 members for their support who have decided to step off the Executive Committee this year:

  • Ange Clark
  • Debbie Sills

Debbie served as our treasurer for the past term and was involved in various ways with the P&F for almost 20 years. It is difficult to put our thanks for Debbie’s support and membership toward the committee. Debbie no longer has any children at the college, and we are so thankful for everything she has done over her years. Angela has been our resident Nurse, and has played a pivotal role in the past few years on the committee at all of our key service events and we look forward to Angela continuing in a volunteer capacity on the P&F ongoing.

Welcome New Committee Members 2024

We welcome 5 new members to the Executive Committee for 2024 and are excited to be working with you all. Thank you for your contribution and welcome to the committee.

  • Shane Hewitt
  • Charlotte Swindell
  • Amina Aggarwal
  • Taran Singh

Join the RHAC-CocaCola Hills Relay for Life Team

Join the RHAC-CocaCola Hills Relay for Life Team

Unlike other fundraisers, all proceeds raised for the Hills Relay for Life go directly to programs run by Cancer Council NSW in services for patients, carers and families of those affected by cancer. This includes transport services, counselling, treatment support and, in some cases financial support.

What a great way to serve the community, and to have a lot of fun in the process. For those who have not yet had the privilege of participating in a Relay, there is no need to be on site for the whole 24 hour period, or any need to actually run. The aim is to raise money and to support our community. There will be entertainment throughout the whole event, food stalls, activities and an opportunity to camp overnight if you are so inclined. If you are a survivor or carer, we particularly like to acknowledge you and your achievements with a dedicated first lap of the day and morning tea. Please join us.

The battle against cancer is a cause of immense significance, and this event plays a pivotal role in raising crucial funds to support the Cancer Council in its mission to fund research, offer patient support, and provide carer information, and counselling services, among other essential initiatives. In 2023, our dedicated Hills community contributed over $300,000 to this important cause.

We are looking forward to welcoming new team members showing supporting for our friends and family. This year we are going in harder and finishing stronger!

Stay tuned for our updates.

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
