A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

I am thankful that Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 successfully completed the NAPLAN tests this week. Mr Johnston and Mrs Vlok coordinated the tests and worked with other teachers to help ensure that students were able to focus on answering the questions to the best of their ability.

I appreciate that some students feel pressure and experience anxiety when completing NAPLAN tests. Mrs Gray shared with me how she helped a few students to cope this week. I am proud of every student who demonstrated the College value of courage as they completed these tests.

NAPLAN began in Australia in 2008 and has been widely discussed in public debate ever since. Some people strongly support these tests, believing that they help parents to understand their child’s progress in literacy and numeracy in comparison to their peers. However, other people, including former NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes, have argued that NAPLAN should be abolished. In 2018, Mr Stokes contended that these tests were being dishonestly used as a school rating system or a school marketing tool. Others have argued that NAPLAN has created an industry of coaching colleges who help children to perform well in NAPLAN tests, but do not necessarily make a long-term difference in helping students to be numerate and read and write effectively.

Rather than enter into this debate, as a principal I acknowledge that, for as long as Australia has NAPLAN, RHAC needs to engage with the data to help improve every student’s literacy and numeracy skills. One way that I have previously used the data effectively to make a tangible positive difference to students is to track how the College performs over time in each of the tests in comparison to the state average.

For example, if a school achieved above state average results for spelling 3 years in a row, but was below state average in numeracy for 3 straight years, it would be clear that the school needed to consider how to improve how numeracy is taught. However, the way that NAPLAN tests are reported changed recently, making it more difficult to for schools to track their results over time.

While NAPLAN results can be helpful for parents to gauge their child’s literacy and numeracy skills in comparison to other students, it is important to remember that each of the results on the page are produced from a single test on a given day. Some students may not produce their best work under exam conditions or when they sit in a large hall with many other students. Therefore, it is important for parents to look to other sources to help them understand their child’s ability to read, write and work with numbers. The RHAC reports and conversations with teachers at parent-teacher interviews can provide helpful information.

Finally for this week, I would like to thank Mr Jacob New (Senior School English teacher) for his commitment to RHAC and the students in his classes. Mr New has accepted a job at another school. He shared with me the many rich memories he has of his time at the College, both as a teacher and a former student. While he is sad to be leaving us, I wish him all the very best for the future.

I am thankful to God that we have already appointed Mrs Hayley Gibson to replace Mr New. Mrs Gibson has many years of teaching experience in South Africa. She lives locally, is a part of a church community and will start with us at the beginning of next term.

From the Scriptures

When was the last time we have actually stopped and reflected upon Easter?

When was the last time we have actually stopped and reflected upon Easter?

Can you believe it? Easter is only a couple of weeks away. As we are fast approaching this time of the year, I am wondering when was the last time we have actually stopped and reflected upon Easter? When was the last time we read the accounts of Jesus’ last few hours leading up to the cross? If it has been a while or you haven’t read it for yourself, I invite you to read the last few chapters of one of the Gospels. In chapel, we are looking at the gospel of John and are up to chapter 18.

Click on the link below to read the passage.

John 18

This week, we chose to focus on the heart of those who encounter Jesus in this chapter.

  1. The heart of the betrayer (verses 1-9)
  2. The heart of the afraid (verses 10-11, 15-18, 25-27)
  3. The heart of the haters (verses 19-24)
  4. The heart of the suspicious (verses 28-38a)
  5. The heart of the mob (verses 38-40)

After reading through the responses of each person or group, the verses that I kept reading over again and again was the response of the crowd (or mob) and I kept asking myself “Why Barabbas? Why someone who is known to be an insurrectionist and was about to be executed for his crimes?”

As we look at these verses, we find that Pilate has just finished questioning Jesus and finds him innocent, so he goes out to the crowd and reports:

“I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”

40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.

Pilate gives the crowd away out, he knows this is a mistake and that Jesus is innocent and so he gives an opportunity for them to save face, he offers the release of Jesus, hoping they would come to their senses. But the crowd has been riled up and they cry out for the release of Barabbas, a known insurrectionist.

In this moment in history, humanity is given a choice: Jesus or Barabbas.

Jesus, the son of God, our heavenly Father or Barabbas whose name when broken down means; ‘Bar’ – son of, ‘Abba’ – father, or son of his earthly father. The choice presented to the crowd is this: Who do you choose? Barabbas, a man whose father is ultimately traced back to Adam. The same Adam who brought sin into our world and death through that sin or Jesus, a sinless man whose Father is in Heaven, God’s chosen Messiah. Given the chance to choose between a sinless man or a sinful man, they reject Jesus and shout “Give us Barabbas!” Given the choice mankind approves of and prefers to continue to live in their sin.

And so it is that Jesus takes the place of Barabbas and faces the punishment that Barabbas deserved. Barabbas is released to roam free to do as he pleases. At this point is sounds like a tragic story and it would be if it ended there. But, what if the claims of Jesus are true, and this very choice made by the crowd is part of God’s plan, that Jesus endures the cross so that we are saved from the slavery of sin and our sins are forgiven? If this Is true, then the echoes of Genesis 50:20 are starting to ring loudly and there is much more to this Easter message than what first meets the eye.

Genesis 50:20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

Blessings

Year 9 STEM elective class - Clean4Shore

Year 9 STEM elective class - Clean4Shore

Year 9 STEM elective class had a great day out on the Hawkesbury River doing the Clean4Shore program as part of their project investigating Human Impacts on Marine Ecosystems. The students got decked out in wetsuits, life jackets and special water boots and gloves and spent the morning travelling along the river near Brooklyn and cleaning up the shore line. There was a lot of plastic rubbish as well as broken glass and polystyrene that was collected and in total, approximately 300kg of rubbish was taken to the tip at the end of the day. This excursion not only demonstrated the important of proper rubbish disposal so that it doesn't end up in our waterways, but how rubbish can impact our marine ecosystems.

Library News

Library News

This week in Junior School library: Scholastic book orders, Premier's Reading Challenge, CBCA Book of the Year Awards, and book covering announcement.

Scholastic Book Orders

All classes have now received the latest brochure. Orders for this edition close on Wednesday 27th March.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are now well on their way to completing this year’s challenge. During library lessons there is quite a buzz around reading from the list and entering completed books directly into the website. We have had some students who have already completed all twenty of the required books and are now working on creating reviews for our library.

CBCA Book of the Year Awards

In the coming week the official announcement of the short listed books for this year’s awards will be announced. This is a very exciting time for authors and illustrators who have entered their books for consideration as they wait with anticipation to hear which of these have been selected for final judging. There are six finalists in each of the categories.

Five award categories are selected annually. They are:

  • CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers — for readers in their secondary years of schooling
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Younger Readers — for readers from the middle to upper primary years
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood — for children who are at pre-reading or early stages of reading
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Picture Book — for outstanding books of the Picture Book genre
  • Children's Book of the Year Award: New Illustrator – for new talent in the field of Australian children's book illustration
  • Eve Pownall Award for Information Books — for books that document factual material

During library lessons in Term 2, students will be looking closely at the short listed books in the categories appropriate to junior school.

Book Covering

Library staff have been busy preparing many new books for our students, as part of this process each new book needs to be covered in contact or plastic, to protect the books allowing them to last longer in the hands of the many students who use them. We could not have completed this task without the assistance of our wonderful parent volunteer “ Covering Crew ” who have covered in excess of 750 books already this year! You are AMAZING and we are so very thankful for your help.

Private Music Lessons

All Private Music lessons have commended this week and I would like to thank our students, parents and tutors, as it took a little while for our new students and tutors had to navigate their way to their first lesson. If you have signed up to have lessons, you should have been contacted by your tutor sometime this week with the lesson times. Please let Mrs Neralie Want know if you have not heard from your tutor [email protected]

Also, we are currently dealing with a large number of applications so if you have sent your applications in the last week or so, there will be some delay in our response. We apologise for this delay and will get back to you as soon as possible. Please contact Mrs Want if you have not heard back from us by the end of this week. If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.

Also, you should have received your instrument if you have applied to hire an instrument.

Again, if you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]

Ensemble Fees

We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.

It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year of music making with your children this year.

Join the RHAC-CocaCola Hills Relay for Life Team

Unlike other fundraisers, all proceeds raised for the Hills Relay for Life go directly to programs run by Cancer Council NSW in services for patients, carers and families of those affected by cancer. This includes transport services, counselling, treatment support and, in some cases financial support.

What a great way to serve the community, and to have a lot of fun in the process. For those who have not yet had the privilege of participating in a Relay, there is no need to be on site for the whole 24 hour period, or any need to actually run. The aim is to raise money and to support our community. There will be entertainment throughout the whole event, food stalls, activities and an opportunity to camp overnight if you are so inclined. If you are a survivor or carer, we particularly like to acknowledge you and your achievements with a dedicated first lap of the day and morning tea. Please join us.

The battle against cancer is a cause of immense significance, and this event plays a pivotal role in raising crucial funds to support the Cancer Council in its mission to fund research, offer patient support, and provide carer information, and counselling services, among other essential initiatives. In 2023, our dedicated Hills community contributed over $300,000 to this important cause.

We are looking forward to welcoming new team members showing supporting for our friends and family. This year we are going in harder and finishing stronger!

Stay tuned for our updates.

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our bi-annual Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Get Involved

To get involved in the P&F, contact us at the email below.

Warm regards,
