Catalyst Visit

Catalyst Visit

Last week Dr Chalwell, Mr Johnston, Mrs Vlok and I went to Canberra and Goulburn to visit a number of schools who are committed to the pedagogical practices associated with Explicit Instruction.

These schools are part of ‘Catalyst’ which is a program run by the Catholic Schools group in the Canberra Diocese. We were made very welcome by these schools who opened the doors to their classrooms and staff rooms so that we could see the visible impact that Explicit Instruction is having on student outcomes. What we observed was very encouraging and also consistent with our vision for the future of our students.

Over the last two years we have shared our journey with you, talking about how we are using Explicit Instruction and High Expectations in our classrooms at RHAC. These are two of the five practices from our Teaching and Learning Principles which also complement this year’s focus on Relational Teaching.

In a nutshell:

  • Explicit Instruction lays a foundation where all students are receiving the clear and consistent teaching of content and skills
  • Our High Expectations approach creates a learning environment which is optimised for student engagement and ensures that each student is encouraged to stretch their capabilities
  • Relational Teaching promotes the establishment of positive rapport between teachers and students so that learning can be effective and feedback can be shared constructively

At home, you can:

  • Encourage your child/ren by supporting our High Expectations approach (completion of homework, being equipped for class, balancing screen time with reading, good sleep habits etc…)
  • Check in with your child/ren regarding the revision of content and practising of their subject-specific skills
  • Keep a positive and open dialogue with your child/ren about their school day
  • Engage positively with your child/ren’s teachers
  • Stay updated with communication sent through from the College, taking opportunities to attend workshops or seminars when available

We are looking forward to sharing our observations and workshopping more strategies with our colleagues during our April Professional Learning time.

I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.

Year 6 Learning Hub & Accelerated Learning Class launching in 2026

Year 6 Learning Hub & Accelerated Learning Class launching in 2026

In my last newsletter article , I wrote about the Year 6 Learning Hub, a new learning space for Year 6 students that is opening in 2026. I am excited about the Year 6 Learning Hub and how we will continue to create a learning environment that supports and extends all our students.

Providing quality learning opportunities for all students requires understanding their individual learning needs to enable them to aspire to and achieve personal excellence. Providing this best fit for learning for each student is achieved through teaching practice that aligns with the RHAC 5 Teaching and Learning Principles and by differentiating the curriculum. Without differentiation, some students can experience frustration in a curriculum that is lacking in challenge and moves too slowly. In contrast, other students, especially those with special learning needs, can experience frustration in a curriculum that moves too quickly and lacks the scaffolding and structure they need to frame their learning. It is important that we support both these kinds of learners.

When Year 6 moves to the Learning Hub in 2026, we will take the existing four Year 5 classes from 2025 and add an additional class, growing to five Year 6 classes in 2026. The new class will be our Accelerated Learning Class , a new initiative of RHAC to accommodate the learning needs of students who learn at a faster pace and have a greater capacity to use abstract and critical thinking skills, have an extensive vocabulary and literacy skills, the ability to reason well and a curiosity for learning.

The Accelerated Learning Class will be taught by a specialist teacher who will provide a specialised, challenging learning environment for the students in the class. Students in the Accelerated Learning Class will work on the same curriculum as all Year 6 students; however, they will move through the curriculum at a faster pace and in greater depth. These students will also participate in all the activities that make Year 6 such a special time in a student’s College life.

All students should experience teaching and learning that provides their best fit for learning. Classroom teachers are the core providers of extension and support for the students through quality differentiation that is embedded in every lesson. Using data from their observations, student interactions and formal assessments, teachers understand and support the learning needs of each of their students. In the Year 6 Learning Hub, regardless of which class students belong to, all students will continue to be supported and challenged to extend their learning where their teachers will provide robust and challenging in-class learning opportunities for them. In addition, extension opportunities will continue to be made available to students regardless of which class they are in to fuel their love of learning and extend their capabilities.

Families of students with the ability to learn at a faster pace who currently attend RHAC or are considering enrolling at RHAC are invited to apply for a place in the Accelerated Learning Class.

Further information about the application process will be released in the coming weeks.

From the Scriptures

Through Christ, we have been given the gift of grace

Through Christ, we have been given the gift of grace

This week in Chapel, we look at John 13:1-17 (NIV). Here is an excerpt: “Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end... After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”

In this poignant moment, Jesus demonstrates the ultimate act of humility and service by washing the feet of His disciples. This act takes place during the Last Supper, shortly before His impending crucifixion. The disciples, unaware of the gravity of the moment, are astonished by their teacher and Lord taking on the role of a servant. This not only illustrates His love for them, but sets a profound example of how we are called to live our lives in service to others.

As Jesus washes the feet of His followers, He teaches them a deeper lesson about cleanliness — not just physical cleanliness but spiritual purity. When Peter initially resists, claiming that Jesus should not wash his feet, Jesus responds, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” ( John 13:8). This highlights the necessity of allowing Christ to cleanse us from our sin. Jesus’ act of washing signifies the cleansing power of His sacrifice on the cross. In His death, He takes upon Himself our filth, our shame, and our sin, offering us the chance to be made whole again.

In our daily lives, we often grapple with feelings of guilt and unworthiness due to our imperfections. However, this passage reminds us that through Christ, we have been given the gift of grace. Just as Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, He offers to wash away our sins, inviting us into a relationship with Him that goes beyond the surface.

Practically, we can apply this lesson by embracing humility in our interactions with others, serving those around us without expectation. We can also seek to extend grace, just as we have received it. When we recognise our own need for cleansing, we can better empathise with others in their struggles. Let us remember that our worth is not defined by our past but by the love and sacrifice of Jesus, who calls us clean and invites us to serve others in His name.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the incredible gift of Your Son, who humbly served and sacrificed Himself for our cleansing. Help us to accept Your grace and to serve others with the same love and humility that Jesus showed. May we remember that we are made clean through Him, and may we extend that grace to those around us. Amen.

NWSRC Girls Rugby Clinic

Throughout this term, a group of enthusiastic girls from RHAC have been joining with girls from Arndell to take part in a Rugby Union clinic run by Rugby NSW. These sessions have been a wonderful opportunity for the students to learn the fundamentals of rugby union, develop their skills, and grow their confidence in the sport.

The energy and teamwork on display each week have been inspiring, and the girls are making fantastic progress. The goal is to build towards some competitive Rugby 7’s games later in the year.

With two weeks left in the current clinic, there’s still time to get involved! If your daughter is in Years 9-12 and would like to give rugby a go, we’d love to see her out on the field. No prior experience is necessary—just a willingness to have a go, learn new skills, and have fun.

The next session will be held at Arndell on Thursday, 20th March 2025, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm before a final session at RHAC on the 27th. If your daughter is interested, please encourage her to come and speak with me.

Celebrating International Women's Day

Celebrating International Women's Day

Recently we celebrated International Women’s Day. Numerous books relating to stories about inspirational women were on display for students to borrow. We also asked students to email us a short story or memory of how a woman had helped or inspired them. Thankyou to the students who shared wonderful stories of how teachers, sportswomen and family members have played a positive and inspirational role in their lives. Some of these stories were printed and included in our display.

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is now open, and a number of students have already signed up to participate. We continue to encourage parents to support their child in taking up this challenge.

Patrick C triumphs at Thredbo Australian Mountain Bike Interschools competition

Patrick C (Year 11) recently conquered and thrived at the Boost Mobile Australian Mountain Bike Interschools competition in Thredbo for the second year in a row. Over 1,100 riders from 350 nationwide schools charged through the dirt fuelled by pure adrenaline. Patrick's week consisted of action packed riding, racing, grit and mateship. His DIVISION 1 race results in Downhill, Flow and All-Mountain highlight his passion, hard work and dedication racing over the last 12 months.

Patrick is thrilled with PBs in all three events. He is incredibly grateful for his recent recognition and sponsorship with Fox Factory and is looking forward to racing at Orange for Downhill Nationals at the end of March.

"Patrick would love to acknowledge RHAC for the support of his ongoing mountain bike journey. He is thankful for the Thredbo experience over the last two years and he appreciates his teachers who encourage him to continue to strive for his personal best whilst balancing school, training and racing," says his proud mum Trudi.

Year 6 students steps into the shoes of Australia’s leaders

Year 6 students steps into the shoes of Australia’s leaders

Today our Year 6 students stepped into the shoes of Australia’s leaders, engaging in an exciting role-play of Parliament. Taking on the roles of the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, Speaker, and Members of Parliament, students debated a mock bill, experiencing first hand how laws are proposed, debated, and voted on.

This hands-on learning experience helped students develop their understanding of democracy, persuasive speaking skills, and the importance of respectful debate. It was wonderful to see them engage with real-world issues, think critically, and collaborate as future leaders.

Well done to all our Year 6 students for their enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions!

Pre-K explores our school community

Pre-K explores our school community

This term in Discovery, our Pre-K students have been exploring the theme "All About Me", learning about our families, the places we live, and the communities we belong to. This week, we embarked on one of our most exciting adventures yet — an exploration of our school to meet the wonderful people who help make our school community so special.

As we journeyed through the hallways, classrooms, and offices, we discovered just how big our school really is. The children were thrilled to meet teachers, staff, and other important members of our school family — including Principal Hartley — , learning about the different roles they play in keeping our school running smoothly. From the front office to the library, and even behind the scenes, our young learners had the opportunity to ask questions, share smiles, and gain a deeper appreciation for the people who support their learning every day.

It was a fantastic experience that not only helped the children feel more connected to their school environment but also sparked curiosity and excitement about the world around them. We look forward to continuing our journey of discovery as we learn more about our community in the coming weeks!

Library News - Scholastic Book Orders, Premier's Reading Challenge & CBCA Awards

Our Pre-K and Kindergarten students have the opportunity to borrow one book weekly, whilst our Years 1 - 2 students are able to borrow two books, and Years 3 - 6 may select three books.

Library visits aim to foster a love of books and reading. All Junior School classes at RHAC have a weekly library visit including a guided library lesson with time allocated to peruse the shelves in search of books to borrow and take home to read and share with family. We have two libraries within the Junior School area of the College:

  • K block - library collection specifically designed for our younger readers and where our K-2 lessons take place
  • H Block - curated collection for our primary age readers, where our students in Years 3-6 participate in their library lessons.

Below is a link to an article you may find helpful, when thinking about your children’s reading behaviours and how to support them.

Why is it important to read to your child?

Changes to Music Ensembles

To accommodate the significant growth in our music program over the past few years, we have restructured some of our ensembles:

  • JS Choir , previously for Years 3-6, has now been divided into two stage-based groups:
    • Stage 2 Choir (Years 3-4) will rehearse with Mrs Watson on Tuesday mornings
    • Stage 3 Choir (Years 5-6) will rehearse with Mrs Morris Wednesday mornings
  • String Ensemble was divided into two groups last year. We have renamed these groups to help distinguish between them:
    • Dolce Strings (Years 1-3) will rehearse with Ms Murphy on Tuesday mornings in the K Space/Library
    • Vivace Strings (Years 4-6) will rehearse with Ms Sawyer on Thursday mornings in the Drama Space (next to the TLC)

These changes will allow our conductors to better cater for the musical needs of all students in these ensembles and provide more opportunities for them to perform at College and external events.

The above change to the choirs means that for now there will not be a distinct auditioned ‘Cantabile’ choir. We will proceed with the arrangements above for Terms 1 and 2. I plan to reassess this change based on feedback from our conductors, students and parents and the availability of staff and rehearsals spaces in through the course of the year.

Re-Enrolment and Attendance

Unless you have notified us otherwise, students who participated in an ensemble last year will be automatically re-enrolled. If your child is not continuing in an ensemble this year, please email Mr Tyler Barnes ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible to update our records and avoid being charged an ensemble fee.

A reminder that punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to the success of our ensembles. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal, please notify the ensemble conductor in advance.

Private Music Lessons

For families interested in private tuition, further details and application forms can be found in the Private Music Tuition Brochure or contact Mrs Neralie Want ( [email protected] ).

Ensemble Fees

The ensemble fee structure for 2025 remains the same:

  • $75.00 per student per semester ($37.50 per term), regardless of the number of ensembles joined.
  • Sibling discount: $50.00 per child per semester ($25.00 per term) for the second and subsequent children.
  • The Stage 1 Choir is exempt from ensemble fees.

These fees help cover the costs of external conductors, accompanists, new repertoire, and performance opportunities.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of music at the College and appreciate your ongoing support in fostering a vibrant and enriching music program.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We look forward to a wonderful year of music-making!

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.

In addition to the weekly updates, Senior School students have been emailed a calendar outlining all the representative sporting opportunities for Term 1.

Please note, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students should be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies for nominations to be accepted.

Nomination Guidelines

  1. All nominations should come from the student interested in trialling.
  2. Students MUST email all nominations to the Head of Student Opportunities AT LEAST 2 days before the nomination date. Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Senior School Musical: Mary Poppins

From the RHAC Musical Production Team

From the RHAC Musical Production Team

SAVE THE DATE: 21 - 24 May

The Mary Poppins musical cast have been rehearsing since October last year for our upcoming shows in May. It has been a pleasure to see our students challenge themselves as they rehearse dialogue, practice routines, and, for some, even learn tap dancing!

In the last week, the cast have been practicing choreography for songs including Jolly Holiday, Playing the Game and Precision and Order. Earlier this week the entire cast came together to polish their harmonies and developing their characters. We continue to encourage the students to practice their lines and choreography as much as possible to ensure rehearsals are efficient. Please keep our students in your thoughts and prayers as we enter the crunch time for our Musical preparation.

If you can sew and would be prepared to offer your assistance either at a ‘sewing bee’ at school, or at your convenience in your own home, please click on the link below or send an email to [email protected] with the subject headline Sewing for Mary Poppins .

If you could indicate what type of sewing skills you have, and if you have your own sewing machine or overlocker, that would be fantastic.

You can hand sew or use a machine, have basic to advanced skills…all abilities are welcome!

Please note: your child does not have to be in the musical for you to be included in this voluntary activity.

Thank you for your support of our students and their musical!

Do you own a business or know someone who does and would like to support the Senior School students at Rouse Hill Anglican College? Here’s your chance to be a part of something magical by sponsoring the 2025 Senior School musical, Cameron Mackintosh and Disney’s Mary Poppins. This lively, high-spirited production will showcase the extraordinary talents of our Senior School students, and with your support, we’re sure it’ll be “practically perfect in every way!”

Not only will your sponsorship help create an unforgettable show, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity for your business to gain exposure and connect with the RHAC community, their friends and family.

“A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down” – and your support can help us make this production sweet for everyone involved! Let’s make this year’s musical truly “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!”

Reminder about animals on College grounds

Reminder about animals on College grounds

A reminder to families regarding our school policy regarding animals on College grounds. Recently, we have noticed some parents/carers bringing dogs onto the premises, particularly during drop-off and pick-up times.

As a reminder, animals are not permitted on school grounds, in line with our College policy. This includes areas such as the main reception and student reception.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring that we adhere to this policy for the comfort and safety of all. Thank you for your support.
