From our Head of Senior School

You establish what you establish

You establish what you establish

I cannot believe that we are already in Week 4. It has been such a positive start to the term with our Senior School students settling into their new routines and classes, meeting new teachers and reconnecting with their peers. I have been visiting a range of classes and am pleased to see the consistency and focus that is evident in each room or space; whether this be a practical lesson in the Science labs or a study period in the Library. The high expectations set by our teachers are raising the standard of student behaviour and engagement in their learning.

Educational theorist Bill Rogers rightly noted ‘You establish what you establish’. Educator and pedagogical expert Tom Sherrington clarifies this as, ‘This refers to the establishment phase with a new class. Right from the start, anything you allow becomes established as allowed; and anything you challenge is established as unacceptable’. Thus the start of the year is significant in ensuring that students are meeting expectations and establishing good routines. The best part is that Sherrington’s advice applies to the classroom, but is also helpful for parents: ‘Talk about it (expectations) explicitly and reinforce it regularly. The start of a new term is a good time’.

In our English class this week, my Year 12 students were reflecting on their approaches to an upcoming assessment task. Interestingly, their commentary drew upon the skills and structures that they had started learning in Year 7. What an encouragement for our younger students to know that they can establish their own good learning habits right now, for future benefit.

At our Launch Night earlier this term our Head of Curriculum, Mr Johnston, spoke to parents of students in Years 11 and 12 about the HSC process and the requirements for post-school options. This presentation was also shared with parents recently via an online session that was run as a follow up. It was encouraging to see how many parents were invested in learning more about these important next steps, and how best to guide their children through this stage of their education.

In my last newsletter item, I wrote about our focus on partnership, and so I would like to conclude by sharing an article from HeadSpace about supporting our young adults in improving their study habits:

Supporting young people to find motivation when studying

Strong parent-school partnerships are one of the best ways to support children’s learning, development and wellbeing. As we know, children whose parents have strong partnerships with their schools:

  • attend school more regularly and usually feel positive about school
  • perform better at school
  • feel valued because their parents are taking an interest in their school lives
  • develop positive social skills by watching parents and school staff interact respectfully
  • have better social, physical and emotional wellbeing
  • are more likely to go on to TAFE, university or apprenticeships

I look forward to continued partnership with each of you.

As the Bible reminds us, our gracious God knows us and knows the road ahead. Through Him all things are possible.

Have a lovely week!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Introducing the New Year 6 Learning Hub in 2026

Introducing the New Year 6 Learning Hub in 2026

Over the past months we have watched the new building majestically rise and we are excited for its future opening. In addition to being an exciting new learning space for the Senior School, the new building affords a wonderful opportunity for the Junior School as we look toward 2026. We will be refurbishing the upstairs of the F Block (above the TLC) to be ready to welcome Year 6 students to their new Year 6 Learning Hub at the beginning of 2026.

The Year 6 Learning Hub is a new initiative of RHAC Junior School which aims to provide a learning environment that continues connections and belonging with the Junior School while fostering students’ future involvement in the Senior School. This specialised environment will cater to the developmental needs of Year 6 students in the significant phase of their final year of primary schooling. The design of the Year 6 Learning Hub will support students to establish strong relationships with other Year 6 students and create a seamless transition to the Senior School.

The Year 6 Learning Hub is centrally located between the Junior School and Senior School with close access to Senior School music and other specialist rooms. While the Year 6 Learning Hub will take advantage of its proximity to the Senior School, its design and location will ensure a safe and welcoming space for Year 6 students that is separate from the daily activities of the Senior School students.

Classes will open onto the central Year 6 library and collaborative learning space and be surrounded by a dedicated Year 6 outdoor student space. Students will continue to take their breaks with the rest of the Junior School and participate in sport and PE activities on the upper ovals, with ongoing involvement in whole school activities including chapel, assembly, extra-curricular, peer support and leadership activities.

Year 6 classes will continue to be taught by Junior School teachers and follow the NSW Curriculum and be informed by the College’s 5 Teaching and Learning Principles .

From the Scriptures

What must you do to inherit eternal life?

What must you do to inherit eternal life?

This week’s scripture news is from a devotion based on Chapel this week written by Mr Howells and edited by Mr Harris.

This week in chapel, we read the parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke 10:25-37 and discussed the topic of peace. In this passage, Jesus has just been asked by an expert in the law (the Old Testament) the question of what one has to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus responds by asking what the law, the Old Testament, required of someone for them to have eternal life. The expert in the law answers with a summary of the law: to love God and love your neighbour. While this is a correct answer, no one, except for Jesus, is able to do this perfectly. We all rebel against God and fall short of his standard.

This inability to live up to God’s standard is then seen in the expert in the law’s question to Jesus, “ what must I do to inherit eternal life?". The expert thinks it’s about what he does rather than about what God has done for us. The expert is also trying to limit what he must do to inherit eternal life, asking the follow up question of “And who is my neighbour?”. The expert is trying to limit whom he must love. Jesus' parable illustrates that everyone is your neighbour, including your so-called ‘enemies’.

In the parable, the man is left half dead by the robbers, and two Jewish religious leaders passed by, a priest and a Levite. In the story Jesus tells, it is a shock and a surprise that the hero in the story is a Samaritan who helps the half dead man, despite the fact that at the time the Jews and the Samaritans were enemies.

Thankfully, like the Good Samaritan in the parable, God has shown us mercy even when we were enemies so that through what Jesus has done, we can have eternal life. We should therefore show mercy to our neighbour as those who have been shown mercy by God in Jesus. We, who have been shown mercy, should likewise show mercy to our neighbour, not to earn eternal life, but as a right response to God’s mercy shown towards us in Jesus.

Heavenly Father,

We are sorry that we have rebelled against you and fallen short of your standard.

We thank you for your abundant mercy shown to us in Jesus death and resurrection for us, even when we were your enemies. We pray that we would be those who show mercy as we ourselves have been shown mercy in Jesus.

In his name we pray, Amen.

Heavenly Father, We are sorry that we have rebelled against you and fallen short of your standard. We thank you for your abundant mercy shown to us in Jesus death and resurrection for us, even when we were your enemies. We pray that we would be those who show mercy as we ourselves have been shown mercy in Jesus. In his name we pray, Amen.

Celebrating Learning

Year 10 Accessible Sports Unit - Learning through experience

Year 10 Accessible Sports Unit - Learning through experience

This term, Year 10 students are engaging in an accessible sports unit, developing their skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by athletes with disabilities. We were privileged to host Wheelchair Sports NSW/ACT, who delivered an insightful session on disability awareness. Students had the unique opportunity to participate in a game of wheelchair basketball, experiencing firsthand the skill and determination required in adaptive sports.

The session also featured a guest speaker, Stephan Rochecouste, who shared his personal journey of resilience, overcoming challenges, and embracing diversity in sport. His powerful message left a lasting impact:

"Don’t see a wheelchair as a sign of disability, but as a sign of mobility."

This experience was invaluable in fostering empathy, inclusion, and a greater appreciation for the power of sport in bringing people together.

3L2 students take on the special role of caring for Compassion Bear

3L2 students take on the special role of caring for Compassion Bear

This week in chapel, the students were reminded of the important work of Compassion and the ways in which our College supports Solomon and Virginia, who live in Kenya.

Every fortnight, Compassion Bear will visit a class, and that class is encouraged to help raise money to support Solomon and Virginia. Each class will also take turns looking after Compassion Bear, ensuring he is well cared for. Students can raise money by donating some pocket money or doing extra chores at home. Every little bit helps make a big difference in Solomon and Virginia's lives. By looking after Compassion Bear, students learn the importance of sharing, caring, and making the world a better place for others.

This week, 3L2 had the special task of caring for Compassion Bear.

Thank you in advance for your support as our students seek practical ways to care for those in need around the world.

Expression of Interest: Live theatre excursion opportunity for Stage 3 (Years 5-6)

I am thrilled to introduce a fantastic new opportunity for Junior School students to experience live theatre performances throughout the year.

Sydney boasts a diverse live theatre scene, and I am truly passionate about introducing students to the world of theatre and performance from an early age. Live theatre is a wonderful way to enhance students' creativity and foster a deeper appreciation for the arts.

Professional theatre companies often offer special school matinee performances, combined with a Q&A session, at a reduced ticket price specifically for this purpose.

We have decided to trial this initiative for a small group of Year 5 and 6 students to watch Dog Man the Musical at the Sydney Opera House.

Please see below some key information regarding music ensembles and private music tuition as we begin the year.

Stage 1 Choir will commence in Week 5 (Monday, 3rd March) . More details regarding how to join this ensemble will be communicated by Mrs Barnett.

Changes to Music Ensembles

To accommodate the significant growth in our music program over the past few years, we have restructured some of our ensembles:

  • JS Choir , previously for Years 3-6, has now been divided into two stage-based groups:
    • Stage 2 Choir (Years 3-4) will rehearse with Mrs Watson on Tuesday mornings
    • Stage 3 Choir (Years 5-6) will rehearse with Mrs Morris Wednesday mornings
  • String Ensemble was divided into two groups last year. We have renamed these groups to help distinguish between them:
    • Dolce Strings (Years 1-3) will rehearse with Ms Murphy on Tuesday mornings in the K Space/Library
    • Vivace Strings (Years 4-6) will rehearse with Ms Sawyer on Thursday mornings in the Drama Space (next to the TLC)

These changes will allow our conductors to better cater for the musical needs of all students in these ensembles and provide more opportunities for them to perform at College and external events.

The above change to the choirs means that for now there will not be a distinct auditioned ‘Cantabile’ choir. We will proceed with the arrangements above for Terms 1 and 2. I plan to reassess this change based on feedback from our conductors, students and parents and the availability of staff and rehearsals spaces in through the course of the year.

Re-Enrolment and Attendance

Unless you have notified us otherwise, students who participated in an ensemble last year will be automatically re-enrolled. If your child is not continuing in an ensemble this year, please email Mr Tyler Barnes ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible to update our records and avoid being charged an ensemble fee.

A reminder that punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to the success of our ensembles. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal, please notify the ensemble conductor in advance.

Private Music Lessons

For families interested in private tuition, further details and application forms can be found in the Private Music Tuition Brochure or contact Mrs Neralie Want ( [email protected] ).

Ensemble Fees

The ensemble fee structure for 2025 remains the same:

  • $75.00 per student per semester ($37.50 per term), regardless of the number of ensembles joined.
  • Sibling discount: $50.00 per child per semester ($25.00 per term) for the second and subsequent children.
  • The Stage 1 Choir is exempt from ensemble fees.

These fees help cover the costs of external conductors, accompanists, new repertoire, and performance opportunities.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of music at the College and appreciate your ongoing support in fostering a vibrant and enriching music program.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
