Teaching and Learning at RHAC

In January this year, our teaching staff spent a few days engaged in some new professional learning which focused on the College’s Teaching and Learning Principles of Explicit Instruction, High Expectations, Effective Feedback, Relational Teaching, and Data Informed Practice.

We believe the connection between school and home is important and so we wanted to share an overview of what our teachers will be working on over the next twelve months to further enhance their classroom practice and student learning.

Professional Learning Research Project

Our Professional Learning program aims to enrich each teacher’s professional practice through the undertaking of a research project in an area of interest connected to our Teaching and Learning Principles. The Professional Learning Project is a year-long collaborative approach to professional learning that allows teachers to bridge the gap between educational research and classroom teaching practices.

Each teacher is involved in researching and developing their own independent project, but is also part of a broader topic-based group which draws our Junior School and Senior School teachers together throughout each term to share resources and discuss their professional practice. As a united learning community, teachers benefit from the shared wisdom of their colleagues.

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership indicates that Professional learning will be most effective when it takes place within a culture where teachers and leaders expect and are expected to be active learners, to reflect on, receive feedback on and improve their pedagogical practice, and by doing so to improve student outcomes. Our teachers are committed to lifelong learning and have been enthusiastically engaged in the initial stages of their research.

We hope to share more about this as the year unfolds.

From our Head of Junior School

A message from Dr Chalwell

A message from Dr Chalwell

There is a moment in every lesson where a class reaches “golden silence”. It is the sweet spot of teaching where students are thoroughly engaged with their task and the classroom is quiet. It is a moment that teachers do not want to break as it is a joy to see students learning. Other learning may be a little louder as students explore, explain and extend their understanding. Every kind of learning is important to us.

We are all about learning at Rouse Hill Anglican College, this is why we are sharing what learning looks like in our Learning Showcases . It was a pleasure to welcome parents and grandparents into Year 6 on Tuesday and we are looking forward to welcoming you into other classrooms over the term.

As I mentioned at last week’s Launch Night, we are very aware of the smooth, calm start we have had this year. We are working hard to ensure that we can make the most of every moment of learning with our students. These things do not happen by accident. They are intentionally created by a unified effort from all Junior School staff and students to create a positive learning environment for everyone. This is why we have created and expect students to follow the routines we have developed for walking around the school, listening and speaking in class, and talking to one another.

If you walk around the school, you will see posters reminding students of these routines. Classes also have routines for things like how their day runs, how to start their day, how to clean up, and what their bookwork should look like. When students know and follow these routines, classes are calm and safe learning environments where great learning can happen.

Parents and caregivers can help us with creating this kind of learning space. You can reinforce these routines as you ask about your child’s day. You can help them to take responsibility for their things and encourage them when they remember what they need to do to get ready for school. You can also help us by remembering that learning is our primary business.

A simple thing you can do is to help us with learning is to support our dismissal at the end of the day . Our school day finishes at 3:20pm. To help with the number of cars that come through the pick-up in the afternoon, we start Kindergarten to Year 2 pick-up at 3:15pm. If you are coming onto the site to pick up your child or children, 3:20pm is the important time to remember for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Until 3:20pm, we are asking our K-2 students to listen carefully to their teachers either as they wait for the car pick-up or as they listen to stories in their classrooms. Until 3:20pm, Year 3 to Year 6 children are learning in their classrooms. We have set aside time every afternoon for teachers to read all kinds of literature to their students. This reading is deliberately pitched at a slightly higher level than students can read on their own. Books and other reading material is chosen to help students develop a love for reading, a deeper vocabulary, and new understanding about our world. Listening takes concentration and application, and it is important that students can do this without distractions.

If you park and come into the school to collect your children, we love to see you and are thankful that you support student learning by not congregating near classroom windows or doors until 3:20 pm. You are welcome to sit at the seats outside the H and J block, but if you do sit there, please do not engage in conversations. If you have younger children with you, please keep them quietly near you. If you are picking up your children through the car pick up, please remember that pick up of K-2 with no older siblings starts at 3:15pm and all other pick up starts at 3:25pm.

Thank you for all those parents who are considerate of the learning that takes place. We all appreciate what you are doing to help us make the most of the school day. When you help us in this way, you help us to squeeze out every moment we can for students to learn. And I know that is what we all want.

A quick summary of afternoon pickup:

  • Dismissal is at 3:20pm.
  • K-2 students without siblings who are picked up by car are lined up and waiting at 3:15pm.
  • If you are parking and walking into pick up K-6 children, your child/ren will be dismissed at 3:20pm.
  • Please be quiet near classrooms while you are waiting to pick up your child/ren as we want learning to continue until 3:20pm.
  • If you are picking up K-2 students with older siblings or year 3-6 students, the gate opens at 3:25pm.

From the Scriptures

John 14:1-6

John 14:1-6

Last week, I shared about a book I had recently read by Ben Shaw called ‘7 reason to (re)consider Christianity’. At the heart of the book, there was a question the reader was asked to consider, “What if it is true?” .

For a Christian, at the centre of their belief is the person of Jesus and it only makes sense to look at Jesus as reported the in the Gospels in the Bible. In Chapel this term, each week we will be looking at the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life as written down in the Gospel of John.

Last week we looked at John 13 which covered Jesus’ humility and servant heart, the prediction of his betrayal and a denial by two of his disciples as well as his command to his disciples about loving one another.

This week’s passage comes from John 14:1-6. As we read this passage and when you get to verse 6, ask yourself “ What if it is true? What would that mean for my life?”

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Year 11 Burn Bright leadership conference

Year 11 Burn Bright leadership conference

On Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th February, Year 11 students participated in a 2-day workshop facilitated by Burn Bright . The Leadership Conference encouraged our students to consider the impact of mindful leadership, as well as the consequences of their own decisions, behaviours, actions and values. The team-building activities strengthened positive peer relationships and the students were encouraged show appreciation for others in the cohort. This experience also allowed them to realise that whilst they should set individual goals in motion, they can grow as a cohesive group to collectively reach the summit of their Senior Leadership journey.

OnSTAGE

OnSTAGE

On Thursday 15th February, Senior Drama students attended OnSTAGE at the Seymour Centre. The performance featured a selection of exemplary group and individual projects from 2023 Higher School Certificate Drama students including performances, video drama, and a moved reading of a script. In addition, our students were inspired by the individual projects on exhibition including costume and set design, promotion and program, and theatre review. The excursion was inspiring and they couldn't wait to get back into the drama room to continue making, performing and critically appreciating drama!

Ensemble rehearsals

All of our Ensembles started in Week 2 with the exception of Stage 1 Choir and Beginner Band. Stage 1 Choir commenced this week (Monday 19th February) and Beginner Band commenced Monday 12th February.

The ensemble timetable, as well as information on each of the ensemble, can be found by following the link below.

Please note that anyone who is participating in our instrumental ensembles (not Choir), they are expected to have private music lessons in or outside of the College.

Audition information for Cantabile and Percussion Ensemble:

Cantabile is an auditioned choir which consists of students from Years 4-6. Auditions were held on Thursday 15th of February .

For the audition, students were required to prepare a verse or chorus from a song they already know.

Private Music Lessons

All Private Music lessons have commended this week and I would like to thank our students, parents and tutors, as it took a little while for our new students and tutors had to navigate their way to their first lesson. If you have signed up to have lessons, you should have been contacted by your tutor sometime this week with the lesson times. Please let Mrs Neralie Want know if you have not heard from your tutor [email protected]

Also, we are currently dealing with a large number of applications so if you have sent your applications in the last week or so, there will be some delay in our response. We apologise for this delay and will get back to you as soon as possible. Please contact Mrs Want if you have not heard back from us by the end of this week. If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.

Also, you should have received your instrument if you have applied to hire an instrument.

Again, if you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]

Ensemble Fees

We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.

It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year of music making with your children this year.

This calendar outlines the nomination (Nom), trial and competition dates for the RHAC Senior School representative sporting pathways (HZSA > AICES > CIS > NSW All Schools > SSA) .

As this is a representative pathway, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies in order for nominations to be accepted. If this is the case, further information will be emailed to students by the Head of Student Opportunities.

RHAC P&F

The RHAC Parents & Friends Association (P&F) is dedicated to fostering community, connection, and contribution. As a non-profit organisation, our mission is to enhance the lives of families and children within the College. All funds raised go directly to benefit our community. We invite parents to actively participate – reach out if you are interested in joining the P&F.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair in September , a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Questions?

Join the Hills Relay RHAC team. We need your support.

Unlike other fundraisers, all proceeds raised for the Hills Relay for Life go directly to programs run by Cancer Council NSW in services for patients, carers and families of those affected by cancer. This includes transport services, counselling, treatment support and, in some cases financial support.

What a great way to serve the community, and to have a lot of fun in the process. For those who have not yet had the privilege of participating in a Relay, there is no need to be on site for the whole 24 hour period, or any need to actually run. The aim is to raise money and to support our community. There will be entertainment throughout the whole event, food stalls, activities and an opportunity to camp overnight if you are so inclined. If you are a survivor or carer, we particularly like to acknowledge you and your achievements with a dedicated first lap of the day and morning tea. Please join us.

The battle against cancer is a cause of immense significance, and this event plays a pivotal role in raising crucial funds to support the Cancer Council in its mission to fund research, offer patient support, and provide carer information, and counselling services, among other essential initiatives. In 2023, our dedicated Hills community contributed over $300,000 to this important cause.

We are looking forward to welcoming new team members showing supporting for our friends and family. This year we are going in harder and finishing stronger!

Stay tuned for our updates.
