A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

I must confess that I find writing the end of year newsletter challenging, not because I don’t know what to write, but rather because I don’t know what to leave out!

RHAC is a busy, diverse community educating children as young as 3 through to 18-year-olds. In the past, Australians viewed education as ‘The Three Rs’ – reading, writing and arithmetic (it is ironic that only one of these three words starts with the letter R). However, over time, education has become more involved.

RHAC believes in the intention behind The Three Rs. We are committed to teaching our students to read increasingly complex literature, express themselves clearly and accurately in writing and develop their mathematical skills. However, our teachers also teach students to develop what are known as higher-order skills such as the ability to analyse, evaluate and create.

In addition to developing these intellectual skills, RHAC has been committed throughout the year to:

  • developing student creativity
  • advancing a student's physical development
  • promoting the spiritual, social and emotional development of students

Teaching students to be creative involves fostering their sense of imagination, invention and originality. Some students express their creativity quietly through a piece of imaginative writing or an artwork that a 5 year old brings home and is put on the fridge with a magnet. Others perform their creativity to an audience. I’m very thankful for the opportunities our students have had recently through various music and dance showcases and of course Shrek the musical earlier in the year.

Our PDHPE lessons have enabled students to develop their physical skills, as have the extracurricular (EC) activities and sporting opportunities throughout the year. The fortnightly EC program in the Senior School, which was introduced at the beginning of last year, has proven to be very popular and successful. To the best of my knowledge, RHAC is one of very few schools that can offer this program during a regular school day. Next year, Mr Luke Adams will be responsible for EC and sporting opportunities across the whole College. He is looking forward to working with Dr Chalwell, Mrs Strong and other staff to maximise opportunities for our Junior School students in the future.

When I was a school student, which admittedly was a long time ago, teachers were relationally distant from students. They came into a classroom, taught lessons, returned our assignments and may have supervised us at sport. However, their involvement in the social and emotional development of students was very limited and their contribution to spiritual development was non-existent.

I trust that parents have appreciated our teachers’ efforts to perceive the needs of individual students and the steps they have taken to meet those needs. The College is committed to proactive, positive approaches to developing our students social and emotional skills. We trust that RHAC’s work in this regard has supported our parents to help every child to understand themselves and others, to know how to respond in a range of situations and how to be resilient when things don’t go well.

RHAC is a proudly Christian school. This means that we teach the Bible directly to students and help them to understand a Christian perspective on a range of areas of learning. The Bible teaches important values that I’m sure many people in our community would support even if they do not profess to be Christians themselves.

Our school teaches students about the Lord Jesus Christ, whose birth we remember and celebrate in December every year. As Christians, we recognise Jesus' birth because the Lord Jesus came to teach us, die on the cross for our sins and rise from the dead to gain victory over death. I trust that when our families open Christmas presents this year they will pause to reflect on the Lord Jesus and what he came to do.

From the Scriptures

What is Advent anyway?

What is Advent anyway?

Could someone please tell me, where did the year go? Christmas decorations are up, Christmas songs are playing at the shops, church is talking about Advent and we are buying our kids Advent calendars! There’s that word again ‘Advent’.

What is ‘Advent’ anyway? I’m kind of curious.

The word Advent simply means “coming” or “arrival” and for some, it is a simple and fun way of counting down to Christmas (hence Advent calendars – with goodies for each day) and yet for others, it is so much more. It is the four-week period leading up to Christmas that reminds us of the arrival of the Messiah (Jesus) and a time to reflect and prepare for the hope we have in his ultimate return.

During this time some people like to reflect on the concepts of Hope, Peace, Love and Joy, others like reading the scriptures (Bible) leading up to, in preparation for Christmas.

If you would like to explore more on the concepts, I have found the following video clips very helpful:

  • Yakhal / Hope
  • Shalom / Peace
  • Agape / Love
  • Chara / Joy

Let me encourage you also to read the following verses found in Isaiah that predict Jesus’ coming and the names given to him.

Isaiah 7:14

Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel (means “God with us”) .

Isaiah 9:6-7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.

He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom,

establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.

The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

As you reflect each week leading up to Christmas on these names given to Jesus, hopefully you’ll also see the connection to the concepts of Hope, Peace, Love and Joy.

May the Lord bless you over the Christmas break as we remember God’s precious gift to us (Jesus), for Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

Stage 2-3 students showcase choreography at Dance Showcase

On Tuesday this week, the Auditorium was filled with the vibrant energy of our enthusiastic young dancers. The Stage 2-3 dance showcases presented a delightful display of exuberance, happiness, creativity, and rhythmic movements (see photos below).

Throughout this term, students in each class have dedicated themselves to crafting their own dances, culminating in performances on stage before a live audience - their very proud families! The enthusiastic applause, cheers, and smiles from the audience served as a testament to the creativity of our students.

I thank the families who came to watch their own and other children perform.

Kindergarten & Year 5 kicks off Christmas season with heart warming Nativity Performance

On Monday, Junior School had our first Christmas celebration for the year. The annual Kindergarten Nativity was a beautiful way to kick off the Christmas season.

Each Kindergarten class learned, prepared and performed a beloved Christmas song, supported by their Year 5 buddies, to tell the real Christmas story.

Mrs Barnett did a wonderful job leading Kindergarten through their songs and actions, so they can share the message of Christmas to their parents and friends.

Chris Z takes home Bronze medal at 2024 State Championships in fencing

Last week, Chris Z (Year 3) participated in the NSW State Championships for Minime (U10 Sabre), taking home the Bronze medal. Chris' overall NSW State U10 Sabre Ranking is 3rd place, and he will now have the opportunity to play at international level in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore next year.

"Chris only started Sabre from Term 4 2023 and only has only had one year of training", says proud parent Young Z.

"Chris was competing with experienced fencers, but he has a really good mentor who supported him."

Join Us in Supporting the Anglicare Toys and Tucker Collection

As we enter this special season of giving, we’re excited to invite all Junior School families to take part in our annual Anglicare Toys and Tucker Collection . This initiative provides much-needed support to families in our community who are experiencing hardship, offering them a brighter Christmas filled with joy and hope.

We encourage families to contribute by donating non-perishable food items or new, unwrapped toys suitable for children of all ages. Your generosity will go directly to those in need, helping to make Christmas a time of celebration for everyone.

Here are some ideas for contributions:

  • Toys : Board games, puzzles, sports equipment, craft kits, books, or anything fun and engaging for children.
  • Food : Festive treats, pantry staples, or special holiday snacks (e.g., biscuits, chocolates, canned goods).

Donations can be placed in the collection boxes located in 5J6 (Mrs Leach’s Class in H Block) in the Junior School. We will be collecting items until Thursday, 5th December , so please join us in making a difference this Christmas.

Your kindness and support teach our children the importance of compassion, embodying the true spirit of the season. Together, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Thank you for your generosity in this wonderful cause.

Picnic Day - Friday, 6 December

Picnic Day - Friday, 6 December

We are looking forward to a safe and enjoyable Picnic Day to end the term. In addition to the Permission Note you will have already received, please note the following requirements for students’ clothing and swimwear:

  • Mufti Day clothing requirements apply (see Student Handbook for details)
  • Students must bring a hat and apply sunscreen (we will have some available at the venue but it is advisable to bring your own to top up as needed)
  • Swimwear must be sun safe and follow these guidelines:
  • All students must wear a rash vest when they are in the water. Students are not permitted to be shirtless at any time.
  • Students must wear board shorts or swimwear bottoms that are in line with the length of bike pants (see example below).
  • Our students have followed this requirement in recent water-based activities and excursions, and some have found their bike pants (with swimming bottoms underneath) have been great to swim in. These are readily found at most department stores.

Students who are uncertain about what they should wear are strongly encouraged to check with their Year Advisor and Homeroom teachers.

Thank you for your support.

Supporting your child with assessment results

Supporting your child with assessment results

As we approach the end of term, your child will be receiving many assessment results. Navigating these can be a challenge for parents from the excitement and disappointment of results to the competition between siblings.

Jenny Anderson from the New York Times has penned an interesting article that can help support parents and families through the high’s and low’s of receiving results and gives practical advice to celebrate your child’s achievement that go beyond an assessment grade.

What to say and not to say when exam results roll in?
