From our Head of Senior School

Thank you, 2024

Thank you, 2024

This is the last newsletter item for me this year, so I would like to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support of the College and your engagement with our events and activities in 2024. There have been so many highlights which I am certain our students will enjoy reliving when they receive their yearbooks in the coming months.

As Christians, this is a very special and significant time of year as we approach Advent - a time of waiting for the arrival of our messiah Jesus Christ. It is a wonderful time of year to get to know your local Anglican church and explore the many events that they are undoubtedly holding in the lead up to Christmas.

As a College community we hold a Christmas Service for both staff and students to reflect on the importance of the Christmas message and to celebrate the hope and joy that comes from our Lord and Saviour.

Luke 2:4-21

Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told to them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

I hope that you have a wonderful break with your families. All information for 2025 will be communicated in the New Year.

May peace be with you.

Getting ready for 2025 - Important dates

Getting ready for 2025 - Important dates

With only two weeks of the school year, the Junior School is busy with finishing the year well and helping students prepare for 2025.

Year 7 Orientation took place last week and was a special day for our Year 6 students. Many of them started the day with concerns about what Year 7 would be like. I am so thankful for the work of the Senior School in helping the students feel excited and calm about what 2025 will bring. I have heard lovely reports of how beautifully the students behaved and participated in the different aspects of the day.

Please note these important dates:

  • Junior School Grade-up Day: Tuesday 3rd December, 11:40 - 1:40pm
  • Kindergarten and Year 5 Nativity: Monday, 25th November
  • Year 3-6 Dance Showcase: Tuesday, 26th November
  • Year 6 Graduation Service and Dinner: Wednesday, 27th November
  • Kindergarten 2025 Orientation Day: Thursday 28th November
  • Stage 1 Nativity and Christmas Service and Stage 2-3 Christmas Service: Monday, 2nd December
  • Presentation Day: Wednesday, 4th December
  • Party Day: Friday, 6th December

For more information regarding these events, please read on below.

Events Overview:

The Junior School Grade-up Day takes place on December the 3rd between 11:40 and 1:40pm.

Throughout this term, Junior School staff have been planning the classes for 2025. Teachers bring together their knowledge of the learning and social needs of each student as well their awareness of any parents’ concerns. This is a worthwhile process that we are willing to spend the time on because we know how important it is that each student is in the best class for them.

The Junior School’s Grade-up Day is an excellent way to support students as they look towards the new year. While it is not common practice for schools, we consider it an invaluable part of our wellbeing program for students. We believe that it helps students to prepare well for the new year and to reduce the anxiety of change. We also know that a small number of students need additional support to prepare them for the day and we have been working with them in the lead up to Grade-up Day.

Grade-up Day starts like any other school day at 9:00am. Students go to their regular classrooms and spend the morning in the usual routine with their usual teachers. At 11:00am, students have their first break and eat their lunch.

Between Break 1 and Break 2, students find out who their new teacher is and who is in their class in 2025. They spend time in their new classroom, getting to know their new teacher and class. The teachers work through prepared activities to help students enjoy this time together. Students have Break 2 as normal and return to their usual class for the rest of the day.

Parents can support their children through this event by both encouraging them to talk about their feelings prior to the event and encouraging them to enjoy the experience. After Grade-up Day, parents can ask their children about the best thing about Grade-up day and express joy about the teacher and class they have been allocated to.

As well as these important events, there are several Junior School events coming in the next two weeks:

  • We love celebrating the birth of Jesus and will do so at the Kindergarten Nativity on Monday 25th November; Stage 1 Nativity and Christmas Service , and the Stage 2 and 3 Christmas Service on Monday 2nd December. Parents/Carers are invited to join us for these events.
  • We will have the Year 3-6 Dance Showcases on Tuesday, 26th November. Parents/Carers are invited to the showcases and as one mother expressed it in an email to me this week: " The dance showcase is definitely one of the main highlights each year that I love to attend, and not just to see my child but everyone."
  • We are looking forward to our Year 6 Graduation Service and Dinner on Wednesday, 27th November. This event starts at 6:00pm with a graduation service where parents/carers are invited to join us to give thanks for the Year 6 students. Students say goodbye to their parents around 6:30pm and celebrate with their friends and teachers in the auditorium until they are picked up at 9:00pm.
  • Finally, Presentation Day is on Wednesday 4th December and Party Day is on Friday 6th December.

Stage 2-3 Stationery Packs and Years 5-6 new girls' uniforms are now available for purchase at the College Shop or online .

With so much going on, it is a busy time for everyone. We are looking forward to celebrating the end of the year and the birth of Jesus with students, staff and parents.

From the Scriptures

Why is it that we don’t seem to prize wisdom anymore?

Why is it that we don’t seem to prize wisdom anymore?

The next passage in James deals with Wisdom. In days gone by people highly regarded wisdom and desired to be wise, but in our society, we don’t seem to think in terms of being wise or having wisdom, rather we talk in terms of people being intelligent, bright, clever or smart, highlighting the importance of knowledge rather than wisdom. So why is it that we don’t seem to prize wisdom anymore?

In the passage below, James asks who is wise and understanding? and tells us that wisdom is demonstrate by our actions (vs. 13). He then gives examples of two types of wisdom that people follow: Worldly wisdom (vs. 14-16) or Godly wisdom (vs. 17-18) and to assess, to which do I follow?

James 3:13-18

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.

14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

As I think about the wisdom James has just mentioned, there is a phrase that comes to mind and as I try to apply wisdom to life’s joys, questions and difficulties.

Godly wisdom adjusts our feelings to our faith, but Worldly wisdom would have us adjust our faith to our feelings.

Senior School sports news & results

Senior School sports news & results

In this week's Senior School sports updates: HZSA results, HZSA Year 7-8 Volleyball Gala Day, and HZSA Junior Cricket Finals.

HZSA Sports Results:

HZSA Year 7 and 8 Volleyball Gala Day

In Week 4, our College took two teams to the Year 7 and 8 Volleyball Gala Day, competing in a round-robin tournament against other HZSA schools. Both teams played with great effort and teamwork, and we are proud of their achievements.

The boys started the day strongly with wins against Arden, William Clarke, and Marsden Park. They faced tough competition in their final matches, with losses to Masada and Pacific Hills, who went on to play in the final. Despite this, the boys finished in a commendable 3rd place , which was a great result.

A big thank you to Astin M, Gloria Z, Isabelle C, and Bianca B from our Open Volleyball team for their guidance and support on the day. We are also grateful to our coaches, Mr. Conoulty and Mr. Park, for their time and encouragement.

Well done to all players for their hard work and positive representation of our College!

HZSA Junior Cricket Finals

Our Junior Boys Cricket team had a fantastic day competing in the finals on Monday, showing great determination and skill across two challenging matches.

In the semi-final against Pacific Hills, the team batted well to post a total of 110 runs off 20 overs. Despite a strong effort, Pacific Hills chased down the total, scoring 111 runs in 18 overs to win the match. A highlight of this game was a standout bowling performance from Xavier Yearsley, who took 2 wickets for 15 runs in 2 overs.

This result placed our team in the 3rd vs. 4th playoff against William Clarke College. The boys came out firing, scoring an impressive 156 runs before bowling out the opposition for 111 runs. Notable contributions in this match came from Oliver Swindell, who scored a remarkable 79 not out, and Amarjot Pawar, who delivered with the ball, taking 3 wickets in his 3 overs.

Congratulations to the team for their efforts and for representing our College with skill and sportsmanship. Well done, boys!

K-2 students shine at the Dance Showcase

K-2 students shine at the Dance Showcase

On Wednesday this week, the Auditorium was abuzz with lots of excited young dancers. Our K-2 dance showcases were a spectacle of energy, joy, smiles, creativity and groovy moves (photos below).

Students in every class this term have been working so hard to create their own dance that they have been able to perform on the big stage to a live audience. The applause, cheers and smiles from the audience were a wonderful reflection of how clever and creative our children are.

I love providing opportunities for students to thrive in the performing arts areas and the dance showcase is a treasured event in the Junior School. I thank the parents who came to watch their own and other children perform, and I encourage Stage 2 and Stage 3 parents to take the opportunity next week.

Take a look at some of the highlights below!

Junior School sports news & results

Junior School sports news & results

In this week's Junior School sports: HZSA Interschool Sports Competition and final results.

The Stage 3 boys basketball team had an incredible run to the final, winning every game of the season. We faced Arndell in the semi-final, a team we had only narrowly beaten by 2 points earlier in the season. Knowing it would be a tough match, the boys delivered a perfect game, showcasing the highlight of our season. Watching the team develop over the season was a privilege as their coach. We implemented a basic 5-out offensive structure, which opened up the court, allowing our players to spread out and cut to the basket effectively. On defence, the boys always showed relentless energy, never leaving the court without giving their all. Most impressive was how they grew together as a team, gaining confidence, trusting one another, and working cohesively on the court. Although the final didn’t go our way, with a close loss to Northholm, the boys left it all on the court. I couldn’t be prouder of their hustle, skill development, and the friendships they built along the way.

Both the Stage 3 Girls Navy and the Gold football teams enjoyed excellent seasons, despite missing a spot in the Grand Final. Each member of both teams displayed dedication and effort in every match they played and demonstrated exceptional teamwork and commitment during our weekly training sessions. Both teams showcased significant growth and improvement throughout the season.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to Matt Prigmore for his invaluable coaching of the Gold team; our journey wouldn't have been possible without your guidance.

The Stage 2 Gold boys basketball team also had an outstanding season. While some players had previous basketball experience, others brought athleticism from other sports, making for a uniquely balanced and dynamic team. The boys worked hard all season, advancing to the grand final against William Clarke College. They had previously lost to them twice—by just 3 points early in the season and by 24 points shortly before the final. However, they came to the grand final with renewed energy and determination, fighting for every ball. It was an unforgettable game that went into double overtime, ending in a close 3-point loss. What a game! I was incredibly proud of the boys. Special thanks to Nic L in Year 10, who coached the team each week. The boys loved having you as their coach, and it was fantastic to see you share your passion with the next generation of RHAC students.

The Stage 2 Navy Boys Basketball Team had a strong season, winning 6 out of 10 games. They held a solid mid-position in the competition, facing both stronger and weaker teams and experiencing some close games. Throughout the season, the boys enjoyed learning basketball skills, adapting to the physicality of the game, and celebrating each basket with big smiles. They were a pleasure to referee, always giving their all. Many thanks to Young Zhang for coaching this season and dedicating your time to support the team!

The Stage 2 HZSA Girls Football Teams have had an exciting and action-packed season. The Gold team played exceptionally well throughout the competition, showing determination and skill, but unfortunately, they were unable to secure a place in the finals. A huge thank you to Richard Palmer for his dedication and support in coaching the Gold team each week - your hard work has been greatly appreciated!

Meanwhile, the Navy team demonstrated outstanding consistency and teamwork, staying at the top of the leader board all season long. Their efforts were rewarded as they made it to the final, where they faced a tough Arndell team. Despite their best efforts, the Navy team suffered their first loss of the season, falling short in what was a hard-fought match.

Both teams should be incredibly proud of their efforts, sportsmanship, and commitment to the game.

We extend our thanks to the families who stood on the sidelines, offering support, valuable advice and cheering them on!

Congratulations to the P&F Spring Fair Silent Auction winners

Dr Chalwell and I recently had the pleasure of hosting a lovely lunch for Jay R (Year 4) and Anya R (Year 6), who won this experience at the P&F Spring Fair silent auction.

The students were treated to a delicious meal and dessert in the Junior School office. Throughout the lunch, they displayed impeccable manners, engaging thoughtfully in conversation about the past year, their plans for the upcoming holiday season, and their dreams for the future. We even had a lively discussion about all the wonderful reasons to become a teacher!

A big thank you to Jay and Anya's parents for supporting the silent auction and helping make this event such a success. We are grateful for your generosity and commitment to the College.

As we enter this special season of giving, we’re excited to invite all Junior School families to take part in our annual Anglicare Toys and Tucker Collection . This initiative provides much-needed support to families in our community who are experiencing hardship, offering them a brighter Christmas filled with joy and hope.

We encourage families to contribute by donating non-perishable food items or new, unwrapped toys suitable for children of all ages. Your generosity will go directly to those in need, helping to make Christmas a time of celebration for everyone.

Here are some ideas for contributions:

  • Toys : Board games, puzzles, sports equipment, craft kits, books, or anything fun and engaging for children.
  • Food : Festive treats, pantry staples, or special holiday snacks (e.g., biscuits, chocolates, canned goods).

Donations can be placed in the collection boxes located in 5J6 (Mrs Leach’s Class in H Block) in the Junior School. We will be collecting items until Thursday, 5th December , so please join us in making a difference this Christmas.

Picnic Day - Friday, 6 December

We are looking forward to a safe and enjoyable Picnic Day to end the term. In addition to the Permission Note you will have already received, please note the following requirements for students’ clothing and swimwear:

  • Mufti Day clothing requirements apply (see Student Handbook for details)
  • Students must bring a hat and apply sunscreen (we will have some available at the venue but it is advisable to bring your own to top up as needed)
  • Swimwear must be sun safe and follow these guidelines:
  • All students must wear a rash vest when they are in the water. Students are not permitted to be shirtless at any time.
  • Students must wear board shorts or swimwear bottoms that are in line with the length of bike pants (see example below).
  • Our students have followed this requirement in recent water-based activities and excursions, and some have found their bike pants (with swimming bottoms underneath) have been great to swim in. These are readily found at most department stores.

Students who are uncertain about what they should wear are strongly encouraged to check with their Year Advisor and Homeroom teachers.

Thank you for your support.

Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to access subject teachers and support and assistance for work or assessments that are currently completing. Students do not need to book a place but should arrive to the listed rooms at the times included in the below grid.

Senior School Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines – Term 4, 2024

Senior School Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines – Term 4, 2024

In addition to these weekly updates, Senior School students have been emailed a calendar outlining all the representative sporting opportunities for Term 4.

Please note, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students should be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies for nominations to be accepted.

Please download the Senior School Representative Sports Calendar –Term 4, 2024 below.

Nomination Guidelines

Students MUST email all nominations (Noms) to the Head of Student Opportunities [email protected] AT LEAST 3 days before the nomination date. Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Nominations need to include the following information:

  • Name
  • Event
  • Date of birth
  • Year Group
  • Parents email
  • Playing positions (1st and 2nd preference)
  • Playing/representative experience

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.

If you have any questions about representative sport or would like some more information about a team or trial, please see Mr. Adams at his office or email him. Additional information can also be found on each association’s website.
