A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

The College community hosted a wonderful Spring Fair last Saturday. Many of our families, their friends and some of our neighbours enjoyed student music performances, stalls, food, rides and even watching the Principal “get dunked” by people young and old who threw balls at a target which saw me drop into a pool of water!

As I have mentioned in previous newsletter articles, the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible refers to there being a time for a range of things. At RHAC, there is a time for disciplined, quiet learning, a time for interactive learning and a time to simply get together and have fun.

To some people, a school Principal talking about the value and importance of fun may seem a little trite. While God made us to be individuals who work hard and set goals to achieve and improve, he equally designed us to enjoy each other’s company. Relationships through smiles and laughter are important.

The Spring Fair has run once every two years for many years at RHAC (apart from a break during Covid) and relies on the perceptive hard work of parent volunteers. There were some parents who contributed on the day and others who invested many months of planning to make the day successful. I am thankful and indebted to every parent, friend, student and staff member who contributed.

In the lead up to the Spring Fair, many of our students completed formal exams, including our graduating Year 12 cohort. Exams and tests are an important, although not the only, way that schools can measure a student’s knowledge and skills. While they are a reliable measure for some students, it is important to remember that there are other students who struggle in exams, while other students perform better in take-home assignments. That is why it is important for schools to rely on more than one approach to determining a student’s knowledge and skills.

As we enter into our final few weeks of 2024, our teachers remain committed to maximising student learning all the way through to the end of the year.

Finally, I recognise that there are a few families and a handful of teachers who are moving on from RHAC at the end of this year. I wish each of them well and thank them for being a part of our community.

From the Scriptures

Do our words reflect Matthew 22:37-39?

Do our words reflect Matthew 22:37-39?

This next passage, from the book of James, was one of the first areas God highlight in my life that needed immediate attention and I am very thankful that he did. It is an area of my life I know I must continue to look to Jesus and seek his help and wisdom for the rest of my life.

Words are very powerful; they can build a person up or tear them down, they can provide wisdom or lead others into foolishness, they can allow others to feel warm and loved or cold and alone.

Our words. whether verbal or written, affect all our relationships, whether it is family, friends, colleagues, neighbours or even people we don’t know. The question is whether we honour or dishonour God with our words, whether we honour or dishonour one another? Do our words reflect Matthew 22:37-39?

Our passage today - James 3:1-12

Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.

3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Year 12 Physics Luna Park Excursion

Year 12 Physics Luna Park Excursion

As part of the Year 12 Physics Module 5 - Advanced Mechanics, students attended Luna Park, Milsons Point on Friday 8th November. The excursion linked with the Depth Study Assessment Task, which will be completed in Term 4.

Students investigated the motion of the rides in the park, especially circular motion. Beyond the thrills, work in alliance with Luna Park to provide an educational experience.

Year 9 STEM elective class represents RHAC at annual Generation STEM showcase

Last week, students from the Year 9 STEM elective class represented the College by participating in the annual Generation STEM showcase night run by the CSIRO and Blacktown council.

Students had been working on projects to address solutions for Uses of Spaces or Transport problems in the local government area. Each group of students presented their ideas in the form of a poster presentation and a physical and/or digital model of their solutions. Members of the public, local council officials and representatives from industry as well as the State Member of Parliament for Blakctown, Mr Stephen Bali, attended the night, and they were all very impressed with the critical thinking and creative ideas that our students presented during the night. Year 9 STEM students should be congratulated for their high level of achievement.

K-6 Dance Showcase

K-6 Dance Showcase

In Term 4 dance lessons, each class has been working hard to collaboratively put together a whole class dance. Performing to a live audience is such a special and important part of performing arts and I am very excited to bring the Dance Showcase back for another year.

Each class has spent their Term 4 lessons using their knowledge and skills of the elements of dance to offer up creative dance movements and combinations to be pieced together into one cohesive performance. It is so special to see the excitement and creativity blossoming from Kindergarten to Year 6.

The showcases will be presented in the College Auditorium at the following times:

  • Kindergarten: Wednesday 20th November, 12:20pm
  • Stage 1 (Years 1-2): Wednesday 20th November,10:20am
  • Stage 2 (Years 3-4): Tuesday 26th November, 12:30pm
  • Stage 3 (Years 5-6): Tuesday 26th November, 11:40am

Your child should wear their sports uniform on the day of their showcase.

(This information can also be found in the Term Calendar)
You are warmly invited to attend and support our wonderful students as each and every one performs up on the big stage.

Reminder: Car park safety during drop-off/pick-up

I am so thankful for how the car drop off and pick up of students runs in the Junior School. The system works well and keeps students, staff and parents safe. I enjoy the opportunity to speak with many parents and students at the beginning and end of the day. To keep everyone safe, it is important to remember the following:

General reminder:

  • Please do not use your phone while driving.
  • Please follow all instructions from staff.
  • Please drive at working pace through the carpark.

K Block parking:

  • Please only park in designated areas in the K carpark – PreK parking is the row that continues on from the Gate 5 road; parking is allowed in the middle section of the carpark.
  • Please do not drop off on the corner between drop off gates 5 and 6 or near the turn off before drop off gate 7.
  • Please remain in your car, if you need to get out of the car to help your children, for example with musical instruments or undoing seatbelts, please park in the middle section of the carpark.

JS Admin parking:

  • Please do not park or drop off your children in the top row of the J carpark.
  • Please do not park on the grass.
  • Please only use the disabled carpark if you have a sticker.

And please remember that teachers are rostered onto this duty twice a day to enable the smooth and efficient running of car drop off and pick up. Depending on the weather, it can be extremely hot, cold or wet. We appreciate it when parents are supportive and understanding.

P&F Spring Fair News

A message from the President of the P&F Association

A message from the President of the P&F Association

A massive thank you to all our families and friends that attended the Spring Fair last weekend to help make it a huge success. This was our largest Spring Fair and fundraising activity in my known history of the Committee and served well on our purpose to create community, connection and contribution within the College. A huge congratulations to all of our students that played in live music ensembles throughout the day; these were a testament to the culmination of a year’s worth of practice and learning with our talented music departments and was just delightful to watch and listen to.

A special thank you to all those that volunteered their time both in the lead-up to the event and on the day; our parent volunteers, teachers and grounds crew, families and friends all pitched in to help the event run smoothly. Of course, we cannot have events such as these without the support of our amazing P&F Executive Committee who work tirelessly and volunteer large amounts of time throughout the entire year to provide this fantastic event for our College.

This Spring Fair we were supported by several amazing sponsors and families of the College which helped to make the Spring Fair a massive success and allows us to contribute more funds back into the school projects. Turtle Nursery and Landscape Supplies, Good Az Gold Tours and Transfers, Grasshopper Soccer (Sydney Hills), Flower Power and the Negri Family, Rental Power and the Wenban family, and all the families that donated toward stalls.

Funds raised at the Spring Fair are being committed toward building new facilities on our main oval to provide toilets and changing rooms for students, which will help to benefit all students at the College for years to come.

Thanks so much from the P&F Committee.
