A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

I enjoy conducting enrolment interviews. It is great to get to know students before they start with us and I also appreciate understanding why parents are showing an interest in our school. Usually parents share several reasons, such as positive word of mouth, proximity to where they live and high standards of discipline and care.

Just this week, a father said that he is keen for his child to join us because our academic performance and overall reputation has consistently improved each year. This is always encouraging to hear because I want to develop a school culture where we celebrate our successes but also recognise our weaknesses and areas for improvement and, most importantly, take realistic steps to be better than we were.

Many new parents share about the importance of a holistic education. They will make comments such as “Academic results are important; however, social, emotional and spiritual development is also important”.  Parents and other adults connected with our school community often talk about the importance of Christian values. Even though they may not be Christians themselves, they firmly believe that these values must Influence all areas of school life because this will develop their child's character.

Recently our Head of Junior School, Dr Kaye Chalwell, and our Head of Student Opportunities, Mr Luke Adams, attended an outstanding conference on character education. Following on from this conference, Mr Adams will lead a project next year on character education at our school. He has described it as a journey towards building a vibrant community grounded in virtue and purpose . While I am thankful for the work we are already doing in this regard, I am confident that this project will have significant benefits for our students.

Research from the Jubilee Centre For Character and Virtues indicates that intentional character education leads to improved student well-being, stronger relationships and better academic outcomes.

Mr Adams recently addressed the staff at an after-school meeting on character education and is currently arranging a staff working party for the project.

The Jubilee Centre talks about the importance of virtues as well as values. A value is a principle or an ideal that is important, while virtues are character traits or behaviours. For example, a value could be “excellence”, but a virtue to help achieve excellence could be “self-discipline”.

The Jubilee Centre’s Research identified 4 interrelated categories of virtue that work together to develop flourishing individuals:

  • intellectual virtues – e.g. critical thinking and curiosity
  • moral virtues – e.g. honesty and kindness
  • civic virtues – e.g. service and citizenship
  • performance virtues – e.g. perseverance and self-discipline

The project will consider the words we will use carefully because words are powerful. They will shape everything we do:

  • Christian education – studying the bible to help students understand RHAC’s moral virtues.
  • Classroom learning - embedding intellectual virtues into curriculum and assessment practices.
  • Student well being activities – developing moral and performance virtues through pastoral care programs.
  • Extra curricular – building civic and performance virtues through sport and out of classroom activities.

I am looking for forward to sharing more about this exciting project at our annual launch night next February.

From the Scriptures

Managing anger as parents

Managing anger as parents

You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment."

Matthew 5:21-26 (NIV)

We all get angry. As parents, it's all too easy to let our frustrations bubble over into anger gone wrong. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5 that anger is serious—it can lead to conflict and broken relationships. When we respond badly out of anger, we risk damaging our bond with our children and our ability to guide them lovingly.

Reflection:
Think about a recent moment when anger tried to take control (or another way to put it, you lost control). Perhaps a child’s misbehaviour set off a chain of reactions. In that moment, pause and remember that our responses shape not only the immediate situation but also our children’s future interactions.

In Proverbs 15:1, we are reminded, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." How can we embody gentleness in our interactions? It might mean taking a deep breath before responding or choosing to communicate calmly, even when we feel overwhelmed.

Practical Steps:

  • Pause Before Responding: When tensions rise, take a moment to breathe. This helps to diffuse immediate anger and allows a more thoughtful response.
  • Pray for Wisdom: Seeking God’s guidance in moments of anger can transform our hearts. James 1:19 instructs us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry.”
  • Model Forgiveness: Just as God forgives us, we must extend grace to our children. Ephesians 4:32 encourages us to be kind and compassionate, forgiving others as Christ forgave us.

Heavenly Father, guide us in our parenting. Help us to manage our anger in a way that reflects Your love and grace. Teach us to respond gently and to model forgiveness, fostering a home filled with peace. Amen.

As you navigate the challenges of parenting, remember that anger can be transformed into opportunities for teaching, learning, and growth in your family.

Mr Ivan Harris, Christian Education Faculty/Year 10 Assistant Advisor

Celebrating Learning

OnSTAGE HSC Nomination

OnSTAGE HSC Nomination

Congratulations to our Year 12 Drama students on the successful completion of their HSC Major Works (Performance and Projects). Their work demonstrated exceptional creativity, discipline and dedication.

"We are immensely proud of their outstanding achievements and wish them every success in their future creative endeavours," said Mrs Edwina Patten (2025 Year 12 Advisor).

Congratulations to Christine R who has been nominated for OnSTAGE.

Christine's original script theatrically explores the conflict between morality and responsibility, staged on the set of a fictitious live television show. ‘The Kass Jameson Show’ forces audiences to consider their own vulnerability and whether or not they are capable of acting when lost in the anonymity of a crowd.

OnSTAGE is an annual showcase celebrating outstanding major works by HSC Drama students from across New South Wales. The program features a selection of exceptional individual and group performances, along with a display of individual projects. The showcase will be held at the Seymour Centre from Saturday 7 February to Friday 13 February 2026.

⭐Finals Week Wrap-Up ⭐

Our Junior Boys Touch Football team took to the field on Wednesday afternoon to take on Northholm Grammar School in the final of the HZSA competition. It was always going to be a tight game with both teams finishing the regular season undefeated and having drawn in their earlier fixture. We put pressure on their try line in nearly every attacking set thanks to some excellent driving from our middles and links, while our wingers stuck to the game plan staying out wide and stretching their defence which led to 4 tries and a 4-2 lead at half time. The second half started with a try to Northholm from the tap off to put the pressure back on and for the rest of the game both teams went back and forth to set up an exciting finish. Strong defensive pressure and calm and composed attacked helped seal the victory 6-5 to earn HZSA Champions. Well done boys on a great season!

At the time of writing this article, our U15 cricket team are currently locked into a tight battle in their semi-final against Redfield College this week. We look forward to hearing how they finished up in next week’s newsletter!

The Junior Girls Gold Touch Football team will play Pacific Hills Christian School on Tuesday 18 November at Hills Grammar. Best of luck to this team as look to finish the season in style. Play hard, support each other, and enjoy the moment! If you’re able to attend, your support would mean a lot. Let’s get behind our teams and show the strength of the RHAC community!

Hayley secures spot on the Indoor Netball NSW State Team

Congratulations to our Year 9 student, Hayley C , on being selected for the Indoor Netball NSW state team. Hayley will be participating in a 7-day tournament in February 2026 in Queensland.

"We’re so grateful for the encouragement Hayley has received at RHAC. The support from her teachers and the College has helped her balance her studies while pursuing her passion for netball. RHAC has also provided her with opportunities to participate in netball events such as HSZA and AICES. It is such a caring community, and we feel very fortunate to be part of it," shared proud parents, Tracey and Peter.

Hills Zone Afternoon Sports Competition

Semester 2 was an exciting time for our Junior School sporting community! We had four fantastic teams from Years 3–6 proudly representing our College in the Hills Zone Sports Association (HZSA) interschool competition. Each week, our students demonstrated incredible skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship, supporting one another on and off the field.

A huge thank you to our Senior School students , who generously gave their time to referee and assist with coaching. Their leadership and encouragement were inspiring and played a big role in creating a positive experience for our younger athletes.

We also want to acknowledge our parents , who came along to cheer from the sidelines and consistently modelled our College Core Values. Your support makes such a difference and helps create a welcoming and respectful environment for all.

To Mrs Leach and Mrs Bainy who coached the teams each week, thank you for your dedication and enthusiasm. Your guidance helped our students grow in confidence and skill throughout the season.

Finally, we couldn’t be prouder of our students, who played with determination, encouraged each other and represented the College with pride. Their commitment and teamwork were truly outstanding.

Special congratulations to our Stage 3 Boys Touch Football team, who won their competition! This is an incredible achievement and a testament to their hard work, teamwork, and perseverance.

Congratulations to everyone involved for making Semester 2 a memorable and successful sporting season!

Now’s also the perfect time to start thinking about joining the P&F Committee for next year! We’re always looking for new faces, fresh ideas and enthusiastic volunteers to help us make next year even better. Whether you have a little time or a lot, your contribution makes a real difference and it’s a great way to meet other families and be part of something fun and rewarding.

Let’s carry that energy into the final weeks of the year - full of gratitude, connection and a little bit of sparkle!
