A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

At the Year 12 Prefect Induction service this week, I shared the story of a boy at one of my previous schools who stood for election as a student leader. Tom (not his real name) was academically gifted, good at sport and a talented public speaker. Part of his pitch to be a prefect was that one day he wanted to be the Prime Minister of Australia. Most people would think that Tom stood a very good chance of becoming a prefect. However, most of his fellow students did not support him and he was not elected.

I suspect a key reason that Tom was unsuccessful was the impression he created that being elected as a student leader was little more than a stepping stone for him to go on to something greater. While this may not have been his motivation, that was the impression many students gained. He was not perceived as being humble.

Leadership must start with core values that you not only articulate, but thoroughly influence what you say, do and think. A core leadership quality is humility. Philippians 2:3-4 in the Bible says:

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.

Jim Collins is a leading writer on leadership in business. In his book Good to Great , Collins describes 5 levels of leadership:

  1. highly capable individual
  2. contributing team member
  3. competent manager
  4. effective leader
  5. level 5 executive

Level 1 - 4 leaders have strong qualities. They complete individual tasks proficiently. They are likely to make intelligent contributions to team discussions and manage other staff competently. A level 4 leader is able to go one step further by creating a strong vision and stimulate high performance standards for everyone in the organisation. However, Collins argues that these qualities are not enough to be a great leader. A level 5 leader is someone who has a unique blend of personal humility and deep resolve . Collins says:

Level 5 leaders channel their ego needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company…Their ambition is first and foremost for the institution, not themselves (p21).

I don’t know what Jim Collins’ religious convictions are; however, his 5 levels of leadership resonate with me, and I hope they do with many in our school community. I trust and pray that our student leaders will understand the critical importance of core values such as humility as they lead our school community.

We have some parents who have shown remarkable humble leadership in recent months preparing for our Spring Fair , which we are all looking forward to in just over a week! This fabulous activity builds relationships, strengthens our community and is good fun. There are too many people who have contributed mightily to the Spring Fair for me to mention their names directly; however, I am deeply appreciative of their efforts. It is not too late for parents and other adults in our community to contribute to the Spring Fair. Please volunteer to contribute a small amount of time to the event. The P&F Spring Fair News section in this newsletter will have details on how to register to volunteer or donate items for the silent auction. Thank you for supporting the College and the students.

From the Scriptures

James 2:1-13 - Favouritism Forbidden

James 2:1-13 - Favouritism Forbidden

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favouritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbour as yourself,” you are doing right. 9 But if you show favouritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Introducing our 2025 College Prefects

Introducing our 2025 College Prefects

On Tuesday, we were honoured to induct our new student leaders for 2024-2025. This group of enthusiastic and focused young adults will be successfully lead by our Captains, Sam J and Tenisha S, as well as our Vice Captains, Molly C and Cooper L.

Tenisha and Sam are to be congratulated on their opening address to the College. It is always a daunting prospect, speaking in front of an entire auditorium of students, staff and guests, however both Captains capably expressed a strong message about leading with humility and following the example we have in Jesus Christ.

Please join with us in praying for the new student leaders as they undertake their various portfolios to serve the College community.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child

Last Friday, our Year 6 and Year 1 students joined forces to pack the Operation Christmas Child boxes, each filled with thoughtful gifts for children in need around the world. It was a heartwarming sight as students carefully arranged the items, knowing the joy they would bring to other children.

Our Year 2 students added a special touch by creating beautiful, handmade cards to be included in each box, spreading kindness through their words and art.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to all our Stage 1 and Year 6 families for their generous donations. Your contributions have made this initiative possible, and we are grateful for your kindness and support.

Uniform changes for Years 5-6

Uniform changes for Years 5-6

This year, the College has been developing a Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) girls’ uniform. The skirt and blouse can be worn in both winter and summer and ultimately will replace the summer and winter tunics. While the skirt is the same as the secondary school skirt, the blouse has been especially designed for the Junior School.

After additional discussions this week, there will be a two year period where families can opt for their children to wear the existing uniform or to change to the new uniform (see below).

Thank you to Amelia L (Year 4) for showcasing the new uniform.

Whooping cough in Junior School - Signs to look out for

Whooping cough in Junior School - Signs to look out for

There has been a small number of confirmed cases of whooping cough (Pertussis) in Junior School. As it is a NSW Health notifiable disease, the College has a duty of care to inform families. Please click on this information for more details.

It is important that parents are aware of the symptoms and seek medical attention for your child should they become unwell.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the College on 8824 5844.

Reminder - Importance of traffic safety

Reminder - Importance of traffic safety

I would like to briefly remind parents of the importance of traffic safety in and around the school. Tragically, a young boy was killed at a school in Victoria this week. Media reports seemed to indicate that a car did a U-turn, went through a fence and hit a group of students.

I manage the traffic during the morning Junior School drop-off each day. The vast majority of our parents do exactly the right thing – they drive slowly and watch carefully. Thank you. However, occasionally I notice parents driving too quickly through the drop off area and then breaking suddenly when they reach the crossing. I have also seen parents watch their child walk into the school while they are driving away rather than watching the road. Another dangerous practice is parents stopping very close to the corner and allowing their child to get out of the car. Sometimes the driver gets out of the car and leaves the driver’s door open.

While I appreciate that parents are busy and understandably do not want to be kept waiting, it only takes one careless mistake for an accident or tragedy to occur. I encourage parents to be equally as vigilant when they are parking their car or picking their child up in the afternoon. Thank you very much for your support in this regard.

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
