Finishing Well: Setting Up for Success in the Year Ahead

Finishing Well: Setting Up for Success in the Year Ahead

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

As we begin the final term of the school year, it’s natural to look forward—to holidays, rest, and the fun of summer—but it’s also a valuable time to look back. The end of a school year offers a rich opportunity for reflection, celebration, and preparation. In classrooms across the College, teachers and students are not simply winding down—they are setting the stage for growth and success in the year to come.

Educational researcher Dylan Wiliam reminds us that “every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better.” The same can be said for our students. This final stretch of the year is a moment for both teachers and learners to pause, reflect on progress, and identify the next steps in their learning journey. Reflection deepens understanding and builds ownership. When students are encouraged to look back at their achievements and challenges, they begin to see learning not as a series of tasks, but as a story they are authoring—one that continues into the new year.

Tom Sherrington, in his work on Teaching Walkthrus, highlights the power of routines and deliberate practice. The habits established in Senior School —organisation, self-reflection, persistence—will carry forward into the new academic year. Similarly, in the Junior School, classroom and learning routines will continue into the new year with new teachers and new classmates. Our teachers are intentional about reinforcing these skills, helping students see that “finishing well” is about more than completing assessments and their final exams; it’s about preparing hearts and minds for what lies ahead. At RHAC, we see this rhythm of reflection and renewal through a biblical lens. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” The end of a school year is a season for gratitude—for what has been learned, for the people who have shaped us, and for God’s faithfulness through it all. It’s also a time to trust that the seeds planted this year will grow in the months ahead.

As families, you can reinforce the value of learning by asking reflective questions at home. These might include:

  • What was something new you learned about yourself this year?
  • What challenged you, and how did you grow through it?
  • What are you looking forward to learning next year?

These conversations help children connect their experiences, celebrate growth, and enter the next year with confidence and purpose.

So as we look towards finishing this school year, let’s encourage our students—and one another—to finish well, reflect deeply, and look forward with hope. God is at work in every season, shaping us for the good work He has prepared ahead.

Mrs Leisa Bromley & Dr Kaye Chalwell

Changes to traffic management procedures in the Junior School

Changes to traffic management procedures in the Junior School

The discerning reader of our weekly newsletter may have wondered why they were still able to park in the H Block carpark before 9:00am this week. Principal Hartley and I decided to allow a week’s grace prior to closing the H Block carpark in the morning.

From Monday 27th October, Gate 4 will be closed until after 9:00am. Access to the H Block carpark will be available to staff through Gate 3 until 8:15am when the chain gate will also be used to close the other entry point to the H Block carpark. As Principal Hartley noted in last week’s newsletter, please do not attempt to access the H block or auditorium car parks in the morning.

Thank you for your understanding and support in keeping our students safe.

Dr Kaye Chalwell
Head of Junior School

From the Scriptures

Christmas in four words

Christmas in four words

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

I wonder what words you might think of if I ask you to describe Christmas is 4 words? Busy? Stressful? Expensive? Special? Jesus? Celebration? Exhausting? Soon? (A friend told me that there are only 9 Fridays until Christmas!) I’m sure each of us could answer that question differently, depending on our experiences or our family traditions, our circumstances or even our religious views.

It’s easy to get caught up in the trappings of Christmas and, although it is still October, Christmas has a way of creeping up on us as we race through Term 4. It is common for Christians to celebrate a season of Advent in preparation for Christmas, reflecting on the coming of Jesus at Christmas as well as His promised return. In light of this, in Junior School Chapel we will be spending Term 4 reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas and considering “Christmas in 4 words”.

This week we learnt that Christmas was “Promised”. As we looked back into the Old Testament, we read from the book of Isaiah. Against a backdrop of gloom and despair for God’s people, God gives His messenger, Isaiah, these words to write to the people. They are words of comfort and hope and the promise of the coming Rescuer. In Isaiah 9:6 we read For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Into their gloom and despair, God promised He would send this promised child, the one who would be Wonderful Counsellor (full of divine wisdom and guidance), Mighty God (God Himself – here on earth with us), Everlasting Father (a ruler who cares eternally) and Prince of Peace (the One who would bring true and lasting peace with God).

God’s people had to wait hundreds of years for the arrival of this promised One, but then, in the book of Matthew, we read these words from the angel of the Lord to Joseph about the child his future bride, Mary, was carrying “ Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:20b-21. At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of this promised Son, Jesus – the One who was promised and the One who came to earth to live and to die and to rise again to bring us peace with God.

As we race towards the Christmas season, what four words would you use for Christmas ? Can I encourage you to consider, with your families, the promised arrival of Jesus on that very first Christmas? He is the One who shows us God’s great love for this world and the One who, through faith in Him, secures for us the greatest Christmas gift of all – peace with God.

Year 7 & Year 11 annual arcade experience

Year 7 & Year 11 annual arcade experience

This year’s Arcade Experience was a huge success, bringing together students’ creativity, innovation and a love for classic games. Our Year 7 Technology students showcased their impressive Pinball Machine Projects, blending engineering and art in hands-on designs that impressed all the visitors.

Meanwhile, our Year 11 Software Engineering students presented their Arcade Game Projects, coding and designing their own interactive games using the Python programming language. The event drew enthusiastic participation from both high school and primary students, who enjoyed testing and playing these designs. It was a fantastic celebration of design thinking, problem-solving, and the fun side of learning through technology here at the College.

A special thank you to all the primary school staff who attended with their students and the Technology (TAS) staff for working behind the scenes with these students in creating these amazing projects over the last term.

Year 6 students demonstrate leadership at G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge

Year 6 students demonstrate leadership at G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge

On Wednesday 22nd October, select Year 6 students - the Rouse Hill Newtons - represented RHAC at the G.A.T.E.WAYS The Challenge held at Bellevue Hills Primary School. The G.A.T.E.WAYS Challenge is an exciting team-based national competition which takes place in Term 4. School teams are made up of students who exhibit advanced abilities across the curriculum. Over the course of a day teams rotate through four different Challenges where the focus is on teamwork over individual performance. Each student has an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in one of the Challenges. Strong emphasis is placed on creativity, lateral thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • It was very enjoyable as it challenged our knowledge, leadership and teamwork skills. The Challenge was hosted in Bellevue Hills Primary school and our team, the Rouse Hill Newtons, were competing against 10 other teams. We are confident that we did the best that we could and are excited for the results that we should be receiving before the end of the term. (Andrew G)
  • Our team, the Rouse Hill Newtons, bravely faced off with ten other teams. We were confronted with four tasks that included challenging content, each of a different subject. The four subjects were chemistry, writing, languages, and maths. I am so glad I got to go, it was a great day, and heaps of fun. A big thanks to the teachers who organised this and also my dad who shifted his whole schedule to drive all four of us to Bondi. (Elyas H)

Congratulations to Andrew G, Elyas H, Hritvik L and Methuki W.

Library News

Library News

Welcome back to Term 4!

The library has been a cool and welcoming place for students this week, especially during the extremely hot days. We have been excited to process many new books to our collection. Student borrowing will continue until Week 4 this term and we will expect all books returned by Week 6. This allows for checking, repairing, ordering and stock-taking to occur.

Scholastic Book Club

This week, the last brochure for the year was sent home with students. Due to our final day of term being early in December we will be closing orders on Wednesday 29th October . Scholastic have a special deal for this brochure whereby if you spend $25 or more they are including some free books. This might be a great way to do some Christmas shopping for family and friends, whilst also benefiting the College (we receive a small commission on all sales to spend on library books and resources). There is a ‘GIFT’ option in this issue, if you would like to take advantage of this you can select the option during the ordering process. The order is labelled gift, and when it arrives here at the College we will keep it in the office for you to collect, rather than send it home with the student.

We anticipate delivery will be in Week 6.

Overdue Notices & Damaged Books

Thank you to all the families who have hunted down missing and overdue books. So many have been returned this week and we are very appreciative.

A small number of books are still MIA and although we know, that unfortunately accidents do happen over the past few weeks we have had a few books returned that have been damaged whilst on a home visit. Water damage, baby or pet chews, food spills are sometimes unavoidable, however, when these incidents involve our library books, and a repair is not an option, or the book is not able to be located, we will need to issue a replacement request.

This can be done in two ways:

  1. A new copy of the book is purchased by the family and sent in to the College. No fees will be charged, OR
  2. An invoice for the cost of replacing the book and an administration fee will be issued to the family, then the College will purchase the replacement book.

Change to Year 1 assembly timetable

Change to Year 1 assembly timetable

Due to some adjustments within the College calendar, the Music Celebration Assembly has now been moved to Week 5.

As a result, Year 1 will be presenting a special item during our regular assembly time on Tuesday 28 October (Week 3), commencing at 11:40am. With Term 4 being a shorter term and filled with many exciting events, all Year 1 classes will now be performing together in a short, combined presentation.

We warmly invite parents and carers to attend this joyful occasion. It is always a delight to see our students shine, and they are looking forward to sharing their hard work with you.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming many of you on the day.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly and at a school level for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy. Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal.

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact Mrs Susannah McDonald (Junior School Learning Enrichment teacher or Mrs Sophia Jones (Senior School Learning and Enrichment).
