From the Principal

A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

The Bible teaches us that there is a time for everything. Ecclesiastes 3 lists a range of activities and circumstances that there should be time for, including a time to weep in a time to laugh, time to mourn and the time to dance, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to be silent in a time to speak.

At the end of last term, our graduating Year 12 students had a time to dance at their fabulous formal after they had been thoughtfully and meaningfully recognised at a Valedictory assembly that morning. Some of the students even managed to persuade a reluctant Principal to get up and dance (if you could call it that) at the formal.

My speech at the Valedictory assembly recognised the importance of the College vision that students achieve academically. When students maximise their academic grades they have more options to choose from for the future. Please pray for our Year 12 students who commenced their exams this week. I wish them every success.

However, my speech emphasised that school is not just about maximising HSC marks. While remembering information, expressing an argument or solving a problem in an exam is an important skill, and even greater attribute is wisdom. There are many very wise people who were not necessarily high academic achievers. Individuals who perceive themselves and others accurately and deeply, and rely on their wisdom to make prudent judgements in demanding situations, make invaluable contributions in workplaces and society more broadly.

I trust that the RHAC community, from Pre-K all the way to Year 12, is helping our students to make wise judgements that will equip them well into their adult lives.

The book of Ecclesiastes teaches that there is a time to embrace. The Christian faith values relationships highly. While we desire for our students to be wise and academically successful, this should not be at the expense of meaningful, positive relationships. I trust that our graduating students will remember the relationships they formed at school with fondness, and hopefully maintain some of these friendships for many years to come.

The passage I referenced above also mentions that there is a time to laugh. I concluded my Valedictory speech by reminding Year 12 students not to always take themselves too seriously. I urged them to find time for fun and enjoyment, because there is a risk in Australia that we can become so focused on achieving in our careers and buying possessions that the joy of life can be squeezed out. I am thankful when I wander the playground that I see students from all ages having simple positive fun after concentrating and working hard in class.

Term 4 is short. I trust that the next 8 weeks will be positive for all of our families.

From the Scriptures

Are you a glass half full person or a glass half empty person?

Are you a glass half full person or a glass half empty person?

Yesterday we started a new series in Chapel. The series comes from the book of James in the Bible. I remember, that this was the first book of the Bible I read after inviting Jesus to take control of my life as a teenager and it had a profound affect on my life, both in the way I viewed how to live my life as a Christian and how to think about my relationship with Jesus.

Have you ever been asked the question, “Are you a glass half full person or a glass half empty person? ”? It is an interesting question asking you to categorise yourself about how you approach life; are you person who sees the positive in things or the negative in things? Oh, if only life was so simple. In my experience, life is never that black and white and your outlook might change depending on your circumstances especially when things really get hard and life is difficult. A passage I find helpful to reflect on is from James 1:2-5.

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Blessings.

HZSA Girls Cricket Gala Day

Congratulations to our Girls’ Cricket Team who shone at the HZSA Gala Day on Thursday! The team competed in the Cricket NSW Blast format, an exciting 8-over game that gives every player a chance to bat and bowl. Our girls played three fantastic matches, securing impressive victories across the board. They triumphed over Hill Grammar 136-72, followed by a win against Pacific Hills 117-95, and capped off the day with a commanding 120-42 victory in their final game, finishing undefeated. Well done to all the players for their outstanding performances!

K-2 Athletics Carnival

On Friday 20th September, we held our annual K-2 Athletics Carnival on the College ovals. It was fantastic to see the students putting into practice all the skills they have been learning in Sport this year. A particular highlight was the parents’ enthusiastic involvement, whether by participating in races or relays, or cheering their children on from the sidelines. The students’ excitement and the big smiles on their faces were clear signs of how much they enjoyed the day.

A special thank you goes to our Year 6 leaders and age champions, who came to support both students and teachers. They did a marvellous job connecting with the younger students and stepping up to lead.

Morning drop-off and afternoon pickup

Morning drop-off and afternoon pickup

College staff have recently observed a very small number of parents who are driving too fast through the Junior School K Block drop off area. There have been some near misses that could have resulted in a damaged car and, even more concerningly, a near miss with a pedestrian on the crossing.

The vast majority of parents are being careful and driving slowly, which I greatly appreciate. However, it only takes one driver who is driving too fast or is not paying attention for a car to be damaged or a person to be injured.

It is difficult for staff who are on duty for morning drop-off and afternoon pickup to speak to drivers directly if they are not driving safely; however, staff will speak to people if they are able to.

Please drive very slowly through the drop off/pick up area, follow the directions of staff and always be alert to what is around you.

Reminder about arriving early to school

Many thanks for your support and understanding.

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
