A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

It was a delight and privilege to induct our new Year 12 Prefects during the week. They are a fine group of young men and women whom I am confident will lead well.

During my speech, I shared about some of the key qualities of a leader. While leaders must cast a clear vision for the future and positively influence those they lead, they also need to believe in that vision and make it a tangible reality.

The book of Nehemiah in the Bible refers to the work of Nehemiah the prophet, who was responsible for rebuilding the temple. Nehemiah did the work of casting a vision about what the temple would look like and how it could be constructed. He mobilised people to contribute to the building work by perceiving their strengths and weaknesses.

However, Nehemiah was a humble leader. He also pitched in and helped when help was required. He lifted some bricks and put them in place, not in a symbolic way, but in a practical and pragmatic way, because that was what was needed to get the job done.

Therefore, leadership is an interesting mix of casting a vision, perceiving need, mobilising people and helping practically when needed.

Mark 10: 43-45 from the bible was read at the prefect induction assembly:

……..whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

These verses remind us that it is not just what a leader says, or even does, that matters most. It is critical that a leader is a person of integrity whose motivation for leading is driven by a deep desire to serve others.

Changes to traffic management procedures in the Junior School

Changes to traffic management procedures in the Junior School

I have been considering traffic movement on the school site. As I'm sure you can appreciate, safety is the number one priority. This is why we have a well-staffed drop-off and pick-up system outside K Block for Junior School and at the front of the Senior School for Year 7 to 12 parents. I realise that some Senior School parents have been frustrated by the significant queue to get into the school, which banks up on Rouse Road. We have considered how to reduce the queue and improve traffic flow. Thank you for seeking to cooperate with our approach.

I have become aware of some significant safety issues outside H Block and in the car park adjacent to the auditorium in the morning. Because I cannot allocate any more staff to supervise more areas in the school for morning drop-off and parking, I have made the reluctant but certain decision to ask parents not to drop their children off outside H Block or in the auditorium car park in the future. From Monday 20 October , the gate to access this area will be locked until after 9:00am when these areas will become available for parking.

Junior School parents should use the K Block drop-off area or park outside K Block if necessary. Alternatively, they may park their car off the school site and walk their child into the school. However, please do not try and access the H block car park, or the auditorium, car park in the morning.

From the Scriptures

The promise of a New Creation

The promise of a New Creation

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.' He who was seated on the throne said, 'I am making everything new!'”

Revelation 21:1-5 (NIV)

As parents, we often navigate a world filled with challenges, uncertainties, and moments of doubt. Yet, in the midst of our daily struggles, Revelation 21 reminds us of the profound hope we have in Christ: the promise of a New Creation.

Imagine a world where pain, sorrow, and separation no longer exist—a world where every tear is wiped away and every heartache is healed. This is the assurance we find in God's promise. As we raise our children, we have the unique opportunity to instil in them this hope. We can teach them that, despite the difficulties we all face, there is a future filled with joy and peace waiting for them because of Jesus.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the hope of a New Creation. Help us to embrace this promise as we guide our children in Christian faith. May we be vessels of Your love, showing them that even in our suffering, we can trust in Your goodness and the beautiful future You have prepared for us. Strengthen us as parents to point our children towards You, reminding them that You are always with us. Amen.

This week, take a moment in your family to discuss what the New Creation means to each of you. Share your hopes, dreams, and the comfort you find in God’s promises. Let this conversation deepen your faith and strengthen your family bond as you look forward to the beautiful future God has in store. Have a blessed week.
