A message from Principal Hartley

I was very encouraged by the large number of parents/carers who came to the recent RHAC Launch Night where I spoke about relational teaching, which is our 2025 theme.

Our school has 5 Key Teaching and Learning Principles which form the foundation of how our students learn. They are:

  • Explicit instruction
  • High expectations
  • Effective feedback
  • Data informed practice
  • Relational teaching

These 5 principles were developed by the RHAC leadership team during 2023 and were formally introduced at the beginning of last year.

Our College vision is

to be a united, Christian learning community committed to taking opportunities, serving and achieving.

For our school to be united, strong teacher-student relationships are essential.

At the recent launch night, I shared about a time when I met up with some former students from a school where I previously taught. They delighted in sharing stories about their former teachers. They talked about a Science teacher who was formidable. She had no tolerance for any form of poor behaviour or failure to do work to a high standard. My former students said that, at the time, no one liked her because she was severe. However, looking back they now realise that despite not liking her, they learnt a great deal about science and also learnt the importance of self-discipline.

My former students contrasted this Science teacher with a Maths teacher. He was popular with many students. He shared jokes and tried to connect with children personally. However, he turned a blind eye to, or even laughed at, inappropriate behaviour. The former students recalled that he laughed when a student threw a chocolate bar into a fan. While they liked him at the time, with the benefit of hindsight they said that they did not learn a great deal of maths and their marks suffered for it.

It is clear that both teachers needed to change their professional practice and conduct. One was too harsh and distant from her students, the other just wanted to be the student’s friend rather than establishing a professional teacher-student relationship.

At RHAC, I am committed to professionally developing our teachers to help ensure that relational teaching means that they are:

  • Firm
  • Consistent
  • Kind

It is probably fair to say that some teachers lean towards kindness, while others lean the other way. Our leadership team is committed to working with teachers to achieve an appropriate balance of being both firm and kind. However, it is consistency that holds firmness and kindness together. Students understandably struggle with inconsistent teachers because they don’t know where they stand. If a teacher insists on complete silence when doing an individual task one day, yet ignores silly or off task behaviour when students are doing an individual task the following day, students become frustrated. The teacher is sending contradictory messages.

Therefore, I am committed to working with RHAC teachers to help ensure that the culture in every classroom is firm, consistent and kind. I am confident that this is an environment where children will feel emotionally safe and confident to learn, take opportunities and achieve. If parents apprehend that the classroom culture and climate is not conducive to learning, they are welcome to write to their child’s teacher and politely raise their concern.

Our teachers always appreciate words of encouragement. If your son or daughter confident and engaged at school because relational teaching is being done well, please write to them to let them know.

From the Scriptures

Where would our world be without light?

Where would our world be without light?

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

Where would our world be without light. We can easily take light for granted. We assume that the fireball in the sky will keep rising up each morning to shine those sun rays down on us, giving us light, heat and energy. Without light, we wouldn’t have our food or life itself. We cannot live without that light.

Jesus tells his followers that they are the light of the world. What does he mean by that? Jesus makes a bold claim in John 8:12: “I am the light of the world”.

Wow, that is some claim. Jesus is declaring himself to be the actual source of life (God) in that statement. He makes these types of claims many times, and it is what eventually gets him killed for making such “blasphemous” claims, unless, of course it is true. As Christians we do believe it is true that Jesus is God, who came to us to love and give his life as a ransom for many, redeeming humanity and giving us eternal life and hope.

So, to be a follower of Jesus is to be connected to him, the source of that life and light. Without Jesus, we cannot shine his light.

As a Christian community, we want to encourage all people to be connected to Jesus, so they too can shine His light and goodness in a dark world.

How can you let His light shine brightly through your good deeds that glorify our loving Father in heaven this week?

9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:9-13

Jesus encourages us to remain connected to him, like a branch to a vine so that we may not only produce fruit in keeping with God’s values, but that our joy will be complete. I wonder if you have a relationship with God that you would describe as full of joy?

The second passage we looked at was from the end of a letter the apostle Paul wrote to the young Church in Philippi. Near the end of the letter, he wanted to encourage them and remind them to be always rejoicing. Paul had recently been arrested (although he was innocent), and the church was anxious for him. Yet, despite his circumstances, because of his relationship with Jesus, he can even write these words about joy and not being anxious despite his circumstances. Listen to what he says:

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:4-9

There is so much in this passage, but I just focused on his repeated phrase ‘rejoice’. We have moments of joy in life, from a nice cup of coffee with a friend, to pets, or hobbies etc… but Christian joy transcends these moments that are temporary or found only in certain contexts. Christian joy is rooted in the promises of God, about life eternal and peace with God through the forgiveness of sins offered by Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Christian joy is our future hope of life forever, when there is no more struggle, pain or sorrow. We can rejoice now, knowing our relationship with God goes on beyond the grave. I pray that you too may experience that kind of Joy in our loving creator God.

Year 11-12 OnSTAGE Drama excursion

On Wednesday, 12th February, Year 11 and 12 Drama students had the exciting opportunity to attend the annual OnSTAGE Showcase at the Seymour Centre.

OnSTAGE presents a selection of outstanding major works by HSC Drama students in NSW including individual and group performance, and individual projects.

Our students were thrilled to be part of this vibrant celebration, gaining valuable insights and motivation for their own creative journeys. Needless to say we were all inspired!

Senior School sports news & results: Swimming Carnival, HZSA

Our Senior School Swimming Carnival started off in great fashion with our early competitors swimming in the 100m and 200m freestyle as well as the 200m Individual Medley, as the rest of the College arrived, it was shaping up to be a great day, that is until the rain set in and when the lightening began we had no choice but to send all of students inside to take shelter. As the time passed, it became clear that we were not going to get to run our full carnival and so the decision was made to send students back to the College who were not serious competitors.

Those who stayed were able to get back in the pool later in the afternoon and we managed to get through all our scheduled events. Although we were rush and events did have to run quicker than they usually would, we managed to see some great, competitive races.

Congratulations to Cuthbert who are our 2025 Swimming Carnival House Champions as well as the following students who earned Age Champion.

Welcoming our new library assistant & celebrating Library Lover's Day

The Senior School library would like to welcome our school community to the new year.

This year we have been blessed with the addition of our new library assistant Mrs Angeline Dela Cruz . It is a pleasure to have her as part of our senior school library team. Angeline brings with her a wealth of experience in various library settings.

Recently we celebrated Library Lover’s Day to coincide with Valentine’s Day. Numerous books relating to love were on display for students to peruse and borrow. We also ran a competition where students had the chance to win a prize if they correctly guessed the number of hearts displayed in the library. We would like to thank Mrs Dela Cruz for creating the wonderful display and competition. Please see photos below of our Library Lover’s Day display.

Exciting new Junior School extra curricular program kicks off

We are thrilled to introduce our new Junior School Extra Curricular Program, which will run fortnightly on Thursdays during Period 7. This initiative has been designed to expose our students to a wide variety of activities, helping them discover new skills, interests, and passions that they might not otherwise have the chance to explore.

Our program offers a diverse mix of skill-based, interest-based, physical activity, and service-based experiences, ensuring that every student can engage in activities that inspire and challenge them.

RHAC JS student leader named CIS Cricket Captain!

RHAC JS student leader named CIS Cricket Captain!

On Monday, Diva and her NSW CIS cricket team won both tournament.

"With God’s blessing she has been given captain’s cap for CIS team" , says Diva's proud mum.

However, the team faced a tough loss against Sydney West on Tuesday. Despite the setback, Diva played an incredible captain’s innings, remaining unbeaten at 51 runs. Over the weekend, she showcased her exceptional skills with a brilliant performance, scoring 87 runs off 99 balls in her district match. Her consistency and leadership on the field continue to shine, making her a key player in every match.

K-6 fortnightly extra curricular program

How It Works

  • Kindergarten: Our youngest learners will rotate fortnightly through engaging activities such as Movement, Games, Lego and Puzzles, Introduction to Coding, and Cooking with Kindy (featuring simple, no-cook recipes).
  • Years 1-2: Students will begin each session with their teacher before rotating through activities that include Auslan, Drawing, Scratch Junior Coding, Gardening, BeeBots, Digital Strategy Games, Kindness Club, Board Games, and Origami.
  • Years 3-6: Students have been placed into 16 mixed-age groups and will experience a different activity each term. Over their four years, they will participate in one skill-based, one interest-based, one physical activity, and one service-based activity each year, ensuring a well-rounded experience.

Exciting Activity Choices for Years 3-6

Students will take part in the following activities over their time in the program:

Junior School Library News

Junior School Library News

The library in H block is open for students in Years 3-6 use each morning from 8:45am - 9:00am and during Break 1 every day. Students can borrow and return books in their library lesson or in these alternate opening times.

A reminder that all students must have a College Library (waterproof) bag to borrow. These can be purchased from the College uniform shop.

Scholastic Book Orders

All classes Years 1-6 received the latest brochure during Week 1. Kindergarten parents are also welcome to order from the brochure sent home with the older students or view the online brochure. Orders for this edition close on Sunday, 23rd February.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will again be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. During library lessons K-2 students will engage with the required number of books as part of their teacher read lessons, whilst students in Years 3-6 will read their books independently. The challenge does not start until later this term but students are encouraged to start reading and recording. During their library lesson students received a recording sheet and their log in details which have been glued into their diary.

Book Covering

Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to be a part of our covering crew this year. We do not currently have any books needing covering but will email when we have our first lot ready. Changes to H Block carpark

Changes to H Block carpark

The College is concerned about the safety of students in the H Block carpark. This is due to students not using the pedestrian crossing, parents double parking and the necessity of driving out the way that drivers have come in. We have reviewed the H Block parking to make it safer by making it a one way system.

  • From Monday 17 February, the orange cones at the end of the lower H block carpark have been removed; however, the chain will remain.
  • Enter and leave the H Block carpark through Gate 4.
  • Drive in a clockwise direction:
    • Turn left into the lower H block carpark.
    • Turn right at the end of the lower H block carpark (this is where there have been a set of orange cones).
    • Drive up to the top level of the H Block carpark.
    • Stop at the crossing to check for pedestrians every time you drive up to the top level.
    • Turn right and out Gate 4.
  • Do not drop your children at the top level of the H Block carpark. Please only park in the lower H block carpark. and walk them into the College.
  • Do not park on the grass.

JS Music Ensemble Information & Private Music Lessons

Please see below some key information regarding music ensembles and private music tuition as we begin the year.

Music Ensemble Rehearsals

Please refer to the JS Music Ensembles Information linked below for rehearsal days, times and locations.

Stage 1 Choir will commence in Week 5 (Monday, 3rd March) . More details regarding how to join this ensemble will be communicated by Mrs Barnett.

Changes to Music Ensembles

To accommodate the significant growth in our music program over the past few years, we have restructured some of our ensembles:

  • JS Choir , previously for Years 3-6, has now been divided into two stage-based groups:
    • Stage 2 Choir (Years 3-4) will rehearse with Mrs Watson on Tuesday mornings
    • Stage 3 Choir (Years 5-6) will rehearse with Mrs Morris Wednesday mornings
  • String Ensemble was divided into two groups last year. We have renamed these groups to help distinguish between them:
    • Dolce Strings (Years 1-3) will rehearse with Ms Murphy on Tuesday mornings in the K Space/Library
    • Vivace Strings (Years 4-6) will rehearse with Ms Sawyer on Thursday mornings in the Drama Space (next to the TLC)

These changes will allow our conductors to better cater for the musical needs of all students in these ensembles and provide more opportunities for them to perform at College and external events.

The above change to the choirs means that for now there will not be a distinct auditioned ‘Cantabile’ choir. We will proceed with the arrangements above for Terms 1 and 2. I plan to reassess this change based on feedback from our conductors, students and parents and the availability of staff and rehearsals spaces in through the course of the year.

Re-Enrolment and Attendance

Unless you have notified us otherwise, students who participated in an ensemble last year will be automatically re-enrolled. If your child is not continuing in an ensemble this year, please email Mr Tyler Barnes ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible to update our records and avoid being charged an ensemble fee.

A reminder that punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to the success of our ensembles. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal, please notify the ensemble conductor in advance.

Private Music Lessons

For families interested in private tuition, further details and application forms can be found in the Private Music Tuition Brochure or contact Mrs Neralie Want ( [email protected] ).

Ensemble Fees

The ensemble fee structure for 2025 remains the same:

  • $75.00 per student per semester ($37.50 per term), regardless of the number of ensembles joined.
  • Sibling discount: $50.00 per child per semester ($25.00 per term) for the second and subsequent children.
  • The Stage 1 Choir is exempt from ensemble fees.

These fees help cover the costs of external conductors, accompanists, new repertoire, and performance opportunities.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of music at the College and appreciate your ongoing support in fostering a vibrant and enriching music program.

Library News

Fortnightly silent reading lessons

Most of our Year 7 students have now experienced their first fortnightly reading English lesson in the library, which will continue throughout the year. During this time, the teacher librarian introduces a variety of texts to a class. Students then have the opportunity to read a book of their choice. The silent reading lessons provide the opportunity for students to read for pleasure in a quiet and comfortable setting for a sustained length of time.

Premier's Reading Challenge

From February 28, we will be promoting the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2025. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 10. During  reading lessons, students will be given information regarding the PRC. We encourage parents to support their child in taking up this challenge.

As part of the PDHPE curriculum, Year 9 students will engage in this Alcohol Education Incursion during week 5. The incursion is an empowering and relatable theatre in education program developed to complement the work that is being done in the classroom. Smashed helps to embed prior learning and present the issues in a realistic, credible format.

Faculty Support Sessions - Term 1

Faculty Support Sessions - Term 1

Do you want to improve your child' s results and their understanding of their coursework? If so, this is a great opportunity to receive guided advice and support.

Faculties in the Senior School conduct weekly opt-in study and support sessions for students to attend as they require.

Students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to access subject teachers and support and assistance for work or assessments that are currently completing.

Students do not need to book a place but should arrive to the listed rooms at the times included in the timetable below.

Senior School sports nominations

Senior School sports nominations

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.

In addition to the weekly updates, Senior School students have been emailed a calendar outlining all the representative sporting opportunities for Term 1.

Please note, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students should be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies for nominations to be accepted.

Nomination Guidelines

  1. All nominations should come from the student interested in trialling.
  2. Students MUST email all nominations to the Head of Student Opportunities AT LEAST 2 days before the nomination date. Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Changes to Music Ensembles

To minimise clashes between various ensembles, there have been some changes to lunchtime rehearsal days for some groups. Please check the information linked above carefully.

We would also like to welcome Mrs Fiona Morris who will be taking on the Senior Vocal Group this year. Mrs Morris is an experienced classroom Music teacher, vocal tutor and conductor. Many students and parents will know Mrs Morris already through her fantastic work with our Junior School students. However, she also brings a wealth of experience in working with Senior School students. We look forward to seeing the continued growth in our Senior Vocal Group this year under her guidance.

Attendance

A reminder that punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to the success of our ensembles. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal, please notify the ensemble conductor in advance.

Ensemble Fees

The ensemble fee structure for 2025 remains the same:

  • $75.00 per student per semester ($37.50 per term), regardless of the number of ensembles joined.
  • Sibling discount: $50.00 per child per semester ($25.00 per term) for the second and subsequent children.

These fees help cover the costs of external conductors, accompanists, new repertoire, and performance opportunities.

Music Camp

Our annual Senior School Music Camp will take place from Wednesday 26 February – Friday 28 February (Term 1, Week 4) . Music Camp brings together musicians in Years 7-12 from various music ensembles for three days of intensive rehearsals, tutorials and sectionals.

Students from Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Giocoso Strings will work with their conductors and other invited guests to hone their technical skills and rehearse repertoire for upcoming performances and festivals. Music Camp is also an opportunity to foster a sense of community amongst our musicians and for students to build relationships with one another, especially across year groups.

Music Camp is an important part of the College’s music program and it is expected that every member of the ensembles listed above will attend.

An information letter regarding Music Camp was sent out (Tuesday, 4th February) to parents of students who are already in enrolled in one of the above ensembles. If your child is interested in joining one of these ensembles and attending the camp, please sign up using the link above and information will be sent to you in Week 2.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of music at the College and appreciate your ongoing support in fostering a vibrant and enriching music program.

Reminder to 'Tap On and Tap Off' your Opal card

From 24 February to 21 March 2025, Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services. It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.

Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?
The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.

How can you help?

Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card) and remind them to tap on and tap off on every trip.
