Most Australian workplaces are driven by tight deadlines, due dates, goals and targets. When workers achieve, or exceed, what is expected of them they hopefully gain a sense of satisfaction. My brother is a farmer. I’m sure that he feels satisfied when he is able to produce quality produce and deliver it to his customers on time. Similarly, teachers are pleased, and possibly relieved, when they complete a large amount of marking and provide feedback on student work within a relatively short space of time.

A message from Principal Hartley
However, is meeting a goal or a target what gives us most satisfaction? For many people, deep satisfaction comes not from successfully completing a task, but rather the appreciation others express for the work that you have done. In short, someone saying congratulations and thank you means a lot.
As Mrs Bromley mentioned in her newsletter article last week, I would like to congratulate the 2023 RHAC HSC graduates. Their hard work and desire to learn contributed to this cohort producing the best results for the top 20% of students in the history of the College. I thank them for their contribution to our community. I thank our hard-working teachers who invested many hours to help those students learn and achieve. I thank their parents who patiently and graciously guided and supported their children in their final years at school to enable them to achieve to the best of their ability.
I would like to thank all those who contributed to the recent parent events. At the beginning of each year at RHAC, we try to provide parents with important information and help them to understand our direction for the year ahead. I trust that this was helpful.
Maintaining a warm and positive relationship between parents and the school is very important. I am thankful for so many parents’ words of appreciation and desire to work with us positively in the best interests of their children. If parents have any questions or concerns, the Parent and Carer Handbook has a section with charts and an explanation on how to contact the right person to respond to their inquiry. The handbook is provided as a link from the newsletter each week.
While written correspondence is necessary and helpful to build a positive parent/school relationship, face-to-face interaction is also important. Therefore, teachers look forward to connecting personally with you in Week 9 of this term for our parent/teacher meetings, including Wednesday 27th March where students (Pre-K to Year 12) will not come to school and the whole day will be set aside for parent/teacher meetings. While we do not have any structured parent/teacher events later in the year, the College encourages parents to write to individual teacher(s) to request a personal phone conversation if a need or issue arises.
The College vision recognises the importance of serving others. I am thankful that the Year 10 and 11 Global Education Trip to Vietnam at the end of last year was a wonderful success. The College intends to offer this trip to Year 10 students at the end of each year. I recently wrote to Year 10 parents (7th February) asking them to express an interest in their child joining the 2024 trip. Only a limited number of people have responded so far and I would strongly encourage students to consider taking up this wonderful opportunity. (Click below)
Finally it is important to remember that the Bible teaches us to be thankful to God.
Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever .
What a blessing and comfort that, in a world that seems perpetually busy and sometimes broken, we have a God who is good and that his love endures forever.
From the Scriptures
The Gospel of John 13
The Gospel of John 13
Recently, I read a book by Ben Shaw called ‘7 reason to (re)consider Christianity’. The question I was being asked as a reader was, “What if it is true?” .
It is a great question. I remember watching an ABC series last year called ‘Tomorrow Tonight’, more specifically an episode on Belief. The big question that was asked “What if God was real?” . On the panel, there were a variety of people with different religious and non-religious backgrounds and the premise put forward, while placing a box on the table – ‘In this box contains irrefutable proof that Jesus Christ is who the Bible says He is and that God is real – firstly, would you open the box and secondly, what would that then mean for you?’ Interestingly, all but one chose not to open the box as they were happy with their life and did not see any reason to change. The person who chose to open the box was a Muslim and they said that the truth does matter, and therefore felt compelled to open it.
In Chapel, we are looking at the question ‘What if it is true? What would that then mean for you’ . To do this, we are looking at the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life as recorded in the Gospel of John starting at chapter 13.
Below are two passages from that chapter, just to start us off thinking and I hope, if you get a chance this week, read all of John 13 (it may surprise you!).
13
It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal , took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet , drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Junior School Sports News - Swimming Carnival (with video)
Junior School Sports News - Swimming Carnival (with video)
It was a glorious day at the swimming carnival on Tuesday 13th February. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere was abuzz with eager students ready to get in the water.
The highlight for many students is always the use of free play in the indoor pool where they have the opportunity to use the waterslide and splash around with their friends. We also saw the success of the newly introduced ‘Lizard Lane’ where students could get in the water at half way and make their way down the pool by swimming a stroke of their choice, by walking or dolphin driving. The less confident swimmers also used this opportunity to hang onto the side of the pool and monkey grip their way towards the end.
There were also some thrilling races, where students battled it out all the way to end of the pool, in the hope of placing high enough to make it to zone. A highlight for teachers is also watching students have a go at the races and seeing their beaming smiles at the finish line because they swam the whole way.
At this year’s carnival, some students struggled when they were in the water because their water confidence and swimming ability was limited, even though their parents had stated on the entry form that they were able to swim. To help ensure that our students are safe at future carnivals, the College would greatly appreciate parents carefully assessing their child’s swimming ability before completing the form and allowing their child to participate.
I would like to thank all the staff and our Year 10 PASS students, they were phenomenal in creating a fun, safe and energetic atmosphere.
Age champions and the winning House of the carnival will be announced at the next assembly.

Junior School Music Ensembles 2024
Please find below information regarding ensemble rehearsals, timetable, audition information for Cantabile and Percussion Ensemble, ensemble fees, and Private Music Lessons.
Ensemble rehearsals
All of our Ensembles started in Week 2 with the exception of Stage 1 Choir and Beginner Band. Stage 1 Choir will commence in Week 4 (Monday 19th February) and Beginner Band commencing this week (Monday 12th February) .
The ensemble timetable, as well as information on each of the ensemble, can be found by following the link below.
Please note that anyone who is participating in our instrumental ensembles (not Choir), they are expected to have private music lessons in or outside of the College.
Audition information for Cantabile and Percussion Ensemble:
Cantabile is an auditioned choir which consists of students from Years 4-6. Auditions were held on Thursday 15th of February .
For the audition, students were required to prepare a verse or chorus from a song they already know.
Private Music Lessons
All Private Music lessons have commended this week and I would like to thank our students, parents and tutors, as it took a little while for our new students and tutors had to navigate their way to their first lesson. If you have signed up to have lessons, you should have been contacted by your tutor sometime this week with the lesson times. Please let Mrs Neralie Want know if you have not heard from your tutor [email protected]
Also, we are currently dealing with a large number of applications so if you have sent your applications in the last week or so, there will be some delay in our response. We apologise for this delay and will get back to you as soon as possible. Please contact Mrs Want if you have not heard back from us by the end of this week. If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.
Also, you should have received your instrument if you have applied to hire an instrument.
Again, if you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]
Ensemble Fees
We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.
It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.
For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).
These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.
Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year of music making with your children this year.

This calendar outlines the nomination (Nom), trial and competition dates for the RHAC Senior School representative sporting pathways (HZSA > AICES > CIS > NSW All Schools > SSA) .
As this is a representative pathway, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies in order for nominations to be accepted. If this is the case, further information will be emailed to students by the Head of Student Opportunities.

As a non-profit organisation, our mission is to enhance the lives of families and children within the College. All funds raised go directly to benefit our community. We invite parents to actively participate – reach out if you are interested in joining the P&F.
This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair in September , a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.
Family Support Meals
From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.
You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Join the Hills Relay RHAC team. We need your support.
Unlike other fundraisers, all proceeds raised for the Hills Relay for Life go directly to programs run by Cancer Council NSW in services for patients, carers and families of those affected by cancer. This includes transport services, counselling, treatment support and, in some cases financial support.
What a great way to serve the community, and to have a lot of fun in the process. For those who have not yet had the privilege of participating in a Relay, there is no need to be on site for the whole 24 hour period, or any need to actually run. The aim is to raise money and to support our community. There will be entertainment throughout the whole event, food stalls, activities and an opportunity to camp overnight if you are so inclined. If you are a survivor or carer, we particularly like to acknowledge you and your achievements with a dedicated first lap of the day and morning tea. Please join us.
The battle against cancer is a cause of immense significance, and this event plays a pivotal role in raising crucial funds to support the Cancer Council in its mission to fund research, offer patient support, and provide carer information, and counselling services, among other essential initiatives. In 2023, our dedicated Hills community contributed over $300,000 to this important cause.
We are looking forward to welcoming new team members showing supporting for our friends and family. This year we are going in harder and finishing stronger!
Stay tuned for our updates.
