A message from the Principal

A message from the Principal

Part of my vision for the College is to be a united, Christian learning community. The recent fabulous production of Shrek JR unified our community. It was wonderful to see:

  • Enthusiastic, talented students perform.
  • Teachers perceptively working with students to produce a feast of entertainment.
  • Sound and lighting, costumes, backstage crew and others who worked behind-the-scenes.
  • Parents graciously supporting their children who were performing and pitching in in so many ways.

I thank each and every one of you.

From time to time in my fortnightly newsletters, I like to shine a spotlight on an aspect of the school that members of our school community may not be aware of. I recently asked one of our teachers, Mrs Susie Grice, to share about her new role at RHAC.

BH: How long have you been involved with the RHAC community?

I first became a member of the RHAC community in 2022 as a parent when my eldest daughter started Pre-K. In April 2023, I extended my involvement within the College community when I accepted a teaching position in the HSIE faculty, where I currently teach Modern History, History Extension, Legal Studies and Stages 4 and 5 Mandatory History and Geography. I have been fortunate to have been provided the opportunity to extend my roles in 2024 to take on the new positions of Student Pathway Advisor, as well as the Assistant Head of the HSIE Faculty.

BH: Where did you work before you came to RHAC?

Before joining RHAC, I was teaching at Penrith Selective High School (PSHS), where I had been employed since 2013. At PSHS, I was a member of both the History Faculty and the Wellbeing team. Throughout my time at the school, I taught Modern History, Legal Studies, Studies of Religion, Stages 4 and 5 Mandatory History, History Elective, and Critical Thinking, with a particular focus on high potential and gifted education. Additionally, I undertook roles dedicated to supporting student wellbeing, including as the Year Advisor for the 2021 cohort, the Stage 4 Academic Advisor, and the school's Anti-Racism Contact Officer.

BH: You have recently been appointed to a new role, as well as continuing to teach HSIE subjects. What does this work involve?

As the new Student Pathway Advisor I look forward to working with students from predominantly Years 10-12 in navigating the transition between high school and their post-school destinations into areas such as further education and training. In this role I will work alongside the Senior Executive team, Welfare team, other staff and parents to provide support and guidance to our older students to help them make decisions about their future. This work will start with the Year 10 Subject Selection process and continue all the way to Year 12 deciding which careers they may like to pursue after high school. My work will involve working with whole year groups to provide general advice and information as well as individual and small group meetings to provide more specific advice to students.

BH: There are so many post school options for students. Do some students struggle to make clear and wise decisions about what they will do after they finish school?

Some students definitely struggle with decision making regarding their post-school futures. For some, they have a clear plan for their future career, have researched their options and have already decided on the best way to make their dream a reality. For many students, however, this process is a lot more daunting and unclear, as this is one of the first times students, as young adults, are making such an important decision for themselves. Some students further struggle with balancing numerous contributing factors in their decision making process, including their own interests, the options available to them - the availability of courses, programs and apprenticeships, as well as other external expectations and influences. While the breadth of options available to students can add complexity to choosing which career to pursue after high school and to accomplish their aim, with some self-reflection, however, it can also afford students a diverse range of options to meet their personal interests and needs.

BH: How can your new role help students in this regard?

As Student Pathway Advisor, a large part of my role is to provide opportunities to students in Year 11 and 12 to gain a better understanding of their interests, post-school goals, and the availability of courses and opportunities, such as scholarships and alternate entry pathways, afforded to them. Students will be provided opportunities, such as, but not limited to, undertaking surveys to help them to identify their interests, visiting careers markets, and connecting with organisations such as universities, colleges and TAFE to gain an understanding of what each can offer them. Through offering meetings with students to discuss options specifically available to their personal circumstances and goals, as the Student Pathway Advisor I will also be able to engage in ongoing discussions to help students develop and adjust their transition plans if their needs or decisions change.

BH: Does your new work involve anything other than helping students to make wise career choices?

In addition to assisting students in their decision making processes about their futures, I will be available to aid students, alongside the Head of Curriculum, Year Advisors and other staff, to navigate the various administrative processes that accompany applying for some post-school opportunities, such as tertiary education and scholarships. Part of my role will also involve facilitating communication with students and their parents regarding careers and post-school related information. My work will further extend to Year 10 at subject selection time when they make their first step in their post-school decision making journey as they choose subjects to study in Stage 6.

BH: Can you share any projects or initiatives you are currently working on?

As a new role, I am currently working on establishing a school-based centralised platform for students and their parents to access general information about processes and opportunities to help in the planning for their futures. Here students will find a variety of resources, such as those regarding UAC and post-school TAFE applications, information on university scholarships, links to other careers tools to help with decision making for both Year 10 subject selections and Year 12 post-school options, and information on where to seek additional personalised advice. I am further working to develop opportunities for students to connect with external organisations, such as universities and colleges, prior to making their final decisions through a Seminar Series to be held at the College during lunchtimes throughout the year.

From the Scriptures

I am redeemed

I am redeemed

Over the past several weeks, we have been looking at our identity if we put our trust in (follow) Jesus. This week, we are looking at I am redeemed .

The word redeemed, according to Google, states the following meanings.

  • To make something less bad – after a poor start to the race, he later redeemed himself…
  • To exchange something for some value – he redeemed his gift certificate for a book …
  • To recover possession or ownership by buying back at a cost what was once yours

The word ‘redeemed’ is also found throughout the Bible often referring to God redeeming his people out of slavery in Egypt. To this day, in Judaism, people still celebrate Passover and part of the celebration is dedicated to remembering their freedom came at a cost (the plagues including the final and most terrible plague - death of the first born in which they then gained their freedom).

Redemption was not just an Old Testament idea or event, rather it was forerunner of God’s ultimate redemption through Jesus. Note definition 3. In the list above - To recover possession or ownership by buying back at a cost what was once yours.

Mark 10:45

“...For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus’ claim is that his life is the price that is needed to be paid to buy back freedom for God’s people, not out of slavery in Egypt but out of slavery to sin. ( Romans 6:23 )

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

On the night Jesus was betrayed, he celebrated the Passover with his disciples, Matthew recalls in his gospel (chapter 26:26-28)

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

By dying of the cross, innocent and sinless, he redeems us, no longer slaves to sin but free I Christ.

The Apostle Peter, encourages us in 1 Peter 1:13-23 with these words.

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect . He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God , who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

I am redeemed!

Blessings

Years 7-10 students compete at GATEway 8

Years 7-10 students compete at GATEway 8

Students in Years 7-10 participated in the GATEway8 competition at Macarthur Anglican College recently. Students competed in teams on a variety of tasks based on Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences.

What students had to say about the GATEway 8 competition

"I learned that teamwork requires one or more individuals striving to reach a shared goal. I enjoyed the maths as I found it stimulating and the most enjoyable". (Daniel)

"I have learned about how important it is to consider other people's ideas, while still voicing your own. I really enjoyed the art task as it allowed me to be creative and push myself to think of what I could draw. I am so glad I got to go on this amazing school trip and make many memories with my peers" . (Arayna)

"GATEway was an amazing experience to help me learn about teamwork and persistence. I loved the challenge created in the maths activities, and I would love to join again next year". (Medhansh)

"I learned about how we can cooperate and come together with different ideas and strategies so that we can succeed in our task. The hardest task probably was science as there were many articles and information that we needed to read and many difficult concepts that we needed to understand. I felt that this highly challenged us and forced us to think very hard about our steps and the ways in which we would complete the work.

My most enjoyable and fun activity was most likely maths or humanities, as we could put our problem solving skills at work and solve interesting and challenging questions. It allowed us to think outside the box". (Mark)

"What I learned about teamwork is that assigning roles to each person is beneficial for efficiently completing the assigned tasks. One of the activities that I enjoyed was the music activity because music is my passion and it was a challenging task as was English because of time constraints.

The activity that I most enjoyed was the technology task where we had to create a circuit for a lightbulb with the given parts". (Caleb)

"I've learned a lot about teamwork during this experience. One of the main lessons is that working as a team makes the experience better and more enjoyable. I enjoyed the English task because we all collaborated well and worked together in a fun way". (Dhoon)

Pre-K Father's Day playdate

Pre-K Father's Day playdate

This year’s Pre-K Father’s Day Play Date was a particularly special event. Held in our brand-new playground, the celebration gave our students the opportunity to acknowledge their dads and grandparents with an afternoon of fun. The children kicked off the festivities by serenading their families with a joyful song.

After the performance, the children were excited to share their new play space with their parents and grandparents. They explored the playground, testing out the sandpit, cubby house, teepee and water creek. Students decorated cookies and presented handmade gifts. It was a delightful afternoon filled with joy and time spent together outdoors.

Thank you to all the fathers and family members who joined us and made this day so memorable for our students! Happy Father’s Day!

Library news

Library news

This week, it has come to our attention that a few of our Stage 3 students are reading novels (bought or borrowed from other libraries) that contain content that is intended for older audiences. To assist you with choosing suitable books for your child, we would like to draw your attention to the SORA reading app that is available through the school student login for free. Years 3-6 have their student login details already. If you are a parent of a K-2 student and you would like to access the app, please contact the library and we will provide you with the login details. In addition, we are most happy to answer any questions you may have with relation to book choices.

This app has a large range of, both audio and readable, books for students Kindergarten to Year 12. We have set the app to only allow appropriate texts for K-6 for our students to use. The app works on a borrowing system much like borrowing the physical book. After borrowing, students have access to the book for a period of 2 weeks at which time they can renew for longer if no-one else has it on reserve.

If parents are unsure if a book their child would like to read is at an appropriate content level, they can check if it is available on SORA. If it is not, there is a good chance the book is not suitable for younger readers.

SORA Book Reading App

Sora is an award-winning digital reading app that empowers K-12 students to discover age-appropriate ebooks, audiobooks and more from their school library. Backed by the largest, most diverse catalogue of digital books available to schools, SORA provides students with access to curriculum titles and leisure reading. The app is available to download to your device and with the student school email address and password, our students are able to use the app for free.

Book Donations

We are immensely grateful to all the families who donated books to our library during the Book Week Book Sale. They have now been covered and stickered ready for students to read and enjoy. The books will be available for student borrowing from next week, with the student who donated the book having the option to borrow it first. Each book has a name plate inside the front cover.

Important note - smoking and vaping ban & managing vaping incidents

Important note - smoking and vaping ban & managing vaping incidents

After what seems like only a few years of being on the market, I am constantly surprised by the lengths that vape manufacturers go to market their products to young people.

Below are images of what are colloquially known as ‘stealth vapes. ’ These devices attempt to disguise vapes and e-cigarettes as everyday items such as stationery, keys, and even asthma puffers, allowing them to be used in plain sight.

Rouse Hill Anglican College works closely with NSW Police, local schools, and health professionals to develop a robust and consistent approach that aims to limit their use at school.

If you would like to know more about vaping addiction, you are welcome to contact Mrs Emma Bourke (Head of Year 7-9) or myself, Mr John Holbrook (Head of Year 10-12). Alternatively, the smokefree.gov website offers a range of useful information and practical strategies specifically targeted at young people.

Senior School Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines – Term 3, 2024

In addition to these weekly updates, Senior School students have been emailed a calendar outlining all the representative sporting opportunities for Term 3.

Please note, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students should be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies for nominations to be accepted.

Please download the Senior School Representative Sports Calendar –Term 3, 2024 below.

Nomination Guidelines

Students MUST email all nominations (Noms) to the Head of Student Opportunities ( [email protected] ) AT LEAST 3 days before the nomination date. Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Nominations need to include the following information:

  • Name
  • Event
  • Date of birth
  • Year Group
  • Parents email
  • Playing positions (1st and 2nd preference)
  • Playing/representative experience

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.

If you have any questions about representative sport or would like some more information about a team or trial, please see Mr. Adams at his office or email him. Additional information can also be found on each association’s website.

Reminder - sign-out procedure, road works and late sign-in, kiss & drop

Sign-out Procedure

It is a duty of care responsibility for the College to ensure that parents attend the Student Reception office at the time a student is signed out early, regardless of the reason. The College is not in a position to allow students to leave the campus without a parent present.

Exemptions include some Senior School Stage 6 students where permission to drive to and from school exists.

Please note we are unable to release students to catch public transport or travel in a taxi or Uber

We appreciate all interactions with our Student Reception staff which are respectful and in keeping with the Parent and Community Code of Conduct .

Road works and late sign-in

We are aware that road works in the vicinity of the College have caused additional delays in the past week. This is beyond our control and we understand that being late can be frustrating and stressful for parents and students. Despite this situation, the late sign-in process still needs to apply, as the College must comply with government legislation around attendance. An explanation from parents at the time of arrival can be noted against the late arrival tag.

Kiss & Drop Zone

In the Kiss and Drop zone at the front of the College main reception, please be as brief as possible when your children are alighting from your vehicle. We have been contacted by other parents who are frustrated by delays created by lengthy conversations at drop off time.

It would also be appreciated if vehicles that enter the College via the main gate (Gate 1) would observe the Give Way sign beyond the pedestrian crossing as you near the Auditorium car park. This is to allow priority to vehicles entering the car park, to ease congestion for vehicles leaving the site.

Thank you for your cooperation with regards to these matters, as it assists with the smooth running of daily operations at the College.

Anglican Synod

Anglican Synod

RHAC is a part of the Sydney Anglican Church. Each year, they have a meeting where ministers and representatives from individual Sydney Anglican churches come together to discuss matters relating all of the churches (the diocese). This meeting is known as Synod and runs for approximately one week.

This year, the Synod is meeting at RHAC on their first day, Saturday 14th September. I am very happy that the Synod will be using our facilities because the decisions they make can influence Anglican schools like ours.

Please pray for Synod members, particularly that God will give them wisdom to make wise decisions.

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Get Involved

To get involved in the P&F, contact us at the email below.

Warm regards,
