A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

Some people believe that corporate vision statements are a waste of time because they see these statements as lofty marketing spin that does not influence the organisation's culture or clearly indicate its sense of direction.

I believe that a vision statement which only exists to superficially impress people is worse than a waste of time. It is misleading. However, not having a vision statement at all is arguably worse, because people rightly want to know what the organisation stands for and where it is headed. Therefore, as RHAC's leader, I seek to make our vision statement a tangible reality that makes a meaningful difference to our students' lives.

RHAC’s vision

To be a united, Christian learning community committed to:

  • Taking opportunities
  • Serving
  • Achieving

I would like to dedicate some time in this week's article to discussing achievement.

Australia has a success-driven culture where people do have the opportunity to achieve academically and in their careers, regardless of their race, religion, gender and economic status.

While not doubting that Australia does have some barriers that make it difficult for people from diverse backgrounds  and those on limited incomes to achieve in their careers, I think it is fair to say that, comparatively, the opportunities that exist in Australia are stronger than in many other countries.

Our College is thoroughly committed to every student having the opportunity to achieve, regardless of his or her background. This is a fundamentally Christian concept because every one of our much-loved students is made in God's image, and all deserve opportunities to do well in their lives. I trust that RHAC plays a valuable part in preparing our students for future success.

I have conducted tours of our new building for existing families over the last few months. Many parents have passed on encouraging words about the opportunities made available to our students to achieve.

It is always gratifying for a principal when parents speak enthusiastically about the contribution teachers make in the classroom, and to hear of the excitement students have for our extracurricular, music and sporting programs.

However, it is worth pausing to think more deeply about what aspiring to achieve and succeed means.

Some people might see achievement in their lives as obtaining a very well-paying job that funds a lifestyle such as a spacious home, a good quality car and overseas travel. Others may interpret achievement as moving up the career ladder, where achievement is defined by your level of leadership in an organisation.

These goals are entirely understandable. I trust that our school is playing a part in helping our students to financial and career success.

However, it is important to remember that these goals do not necessarily bring happiness. I spoke to a middle-aged man recently who has all these things: a beautiful home in an expensive suburb, European cars and is planning another overseas trip with his family. He has an impressive job leading a team in one of Australia's biggest companies. However, he reflected to me that his job is gruelling. The hours are long and stressful and he sometimes wishes he could move to a quiet place in the country and live a simpler life.

This is obviously not the case for everyone in a high-powered, high-status job. I'm sure that there are many people in these roles who love their work and I am thankful that they do, because successful business people make an important contribution to society by generating economic growth and employment. I simply illustrate that career and financial achievement does not necessarily result in joy and happiness.

The Bible challenges the simple formula that wealth + career status = achievement

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ( Philippians 2:3,4)

Pursuing your own goals in a way that disadvantages others, or ignores everyone else's needs other than your own, is not Christian behaviour. The Bible passage above urges us to always be mindful of the needs of others as we seek to pursue achievement in our lives. I trust that our students will keep this value firmly in their hearts and minds as they seek to achieve.

Proposed change to bus route 3515 – RHAC to Annangrove & Kenthurst

CDC bus route 3515 from the College in the afternoon travels towards Annangrove and Kenthurst.

We recently received correspondence from the bus company stating that they are proposing to stop the route at Shoplands Road and not continue on to Kenthurst.

The bus company only informed RHAC of this proposed change a few days ago and has asked the College to provide any feedback or concerns by Wednesday, 10th September . Please email [email protected] u so Principal Hartley can pass your feedback on to the bus company before a final decision is made.

Mission of the King

Mission of the King

In Chapel last week, we read John 3 where we encounter a profound conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee who sought the truth from Jesus, under the cover of night, for he was fearful of his peers. Jesus said to him, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” This profound statement invites us to reflect on the nature of spiritual rebirth and transformation, which results in eternal life (Kingdom of God).

As parents, we often experience moments of growth and change in our children. Each milestone—be it their first steps, first words, or first day of school—represents a new beginning. Similarly, Jesus invites us to embrace a new beginning in our spiritual lives.

  • The Need for Transformation: Just as we nurture our children’s physical and emotional growth, through new beginnings, Jesus calls us to seek our own spiritual rebirth. Unless we are born of God’s spirit how can we share in His agape, unconditional love and then share that with our own children?
  • The Power of Faith: Jesus emphasises faith (trust) in Him is this new life. Encourage your children to cultivate this faith, reminding them that believing in Jesus opens the door to God’s holy spirit to transform us from the inside out and welcome God’s love that ultimately gives us access to eternal life. This love was what drove God to send us Jesus into the world. This was the mission of the King as stated clearly by one of the most famous bible verses in history: For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son that whoever believes in Him, shall not perished but have eternal life.
  • Sharing the Light: Jesus came into the world not to condemn it, but to save it. As parents, we can model this love and grace in our families. How can we demonstrate unconditional love and acceptance this week?

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of new life through Your Son, Jesus. Help us to embrace the transformation You offer by your Holy spirit and to walk trusting in you. May our families reflect Your light and love, guiding our children toward their own spiritual journeys. Amen.

Celebrating Learning

From Kindergarten to Year 12: A full circle moment of connection & celebration

From Kindergarten to Year 12: A full circle moment of connection & celebration

Last week, our Kindergarten students shared a special moment with the Year 12 Class of 2025, a touching moment where the first and final chapters of the school journey came together. The little ones looked up with wonder, while our Senior School students looked back with pride, remembering when their own journey began.

Laughter, games, and warm smiles all around, creating memories and reminding us that school is about more than just lessons. It’s about friendships, growth, and the joy of sharing milestones together.

From the very first day of Kindergarten to the final year of school, it’s a beautiful full circle of learning, connection, and community.

SRC Fundraiser: K-6 Crazy Socks & Hair Day

SRC Fundraiser: K-6 Crazy Socks & Hair Day

On Monday, our incredible Junior School Representative Council (SRC) organised a fun and meaningful day to support student-led ideas for improving our Junior School.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 brought their best crazy socks and wildest hats for our annual Crazy Socks and Hat Day — all for a gold coin donation to help turn exciting student ideas into reality.

We’re grateful to our students and staff who took part in and donated to the fundraiser, helping make the College an even better place to learn and grow!

Year 3 spreads joy with letters to Anglicare residents

As part of their annual service project, our Year 3 students wrote heartfelt letters to residents of several Anglicare retirement villages. The response was truly moving—last week, some students received personalised, handwritten replies that brought huge smiles and a sense of connection across generations.

This simple act of kindness has sparked a beautiful exchange, and we’re excited to continue nurturing these relationships with our local senior Australians. The joy was contagious—just look at the delighted faces in the photos below!

Year 3 students were very excited to welcome Jessica G (Year 9) to their library lesson last week. Jessica and her grandfather have written and illustrated a picture book for children. She shared the process of creating and publishing the book, along with her own personal reflections of the experience and joy of working alongside her grandfather. We would like to thank Jessica for her fabulous presentation and encourage her in her future endeavours as an illustrator.

Congratulations Aarya S on winning the take home prize of a copy of Jess’ book ‘The Alien’s Medieval Adventure’.

NSW State Futsal Championships

Last Thursday, nine students from Years 5 and 6 proudly represented the College at the NSW State Futsal Championships. The team earned their place in this prestigious competition after finishing second at the regional tournament last term.

The level of competition was extremely high, with the very best futsal players from across the state coming together to compete. Our boys rose to the challenge, working hard in every match and showing great resilience, determination, and teamwork against some very strong opposition.

A special thank you goes to Mr de Souza, who not only dedicated time to train the boys before school but also coached them throughout the day. His guidance, encouragement, and knowledge of the game were invaluable and a huge asset to the team’s experience.

Congratulations to the boys on reaching the State Championships — an incredible achievement in itself and for representing the College with such pride.

Congratulations to the following students: Sahir B, Xavier dS, Christian D, Joshua F, Cohen I, Isaac L, Thomas M, Elroy S, Ethan vdM.

Dr Cameron Book Orders

The personalised book orders have now been delivered. Happy reading!

Overdue Notices & Damaged Books

A small number of overdue notices will be sent home during next week. Please return any books as soon as possible to avoid any loss of borrowing privileges, or replacement book charges.

Unfortunately accidents do happen and this week we have had a few books returned that have been damaged whilst on a home visit. Water damage, baby or pet chews, food spills are sometimes unavoidable, however, when these incidents involve our library books, and a repair is not an option we will need to issue a replacement request.

This can be done in two ways;

  1. A new copy of the book is purchased by the family and sent in to the College. No fees will be charged, OR
  2. An invoice for the cost of replacing the book and an administration fee will be issued to the family, then the College will purchase the replacement book.

Crazy Camel Fundraiser: Support the Year 6 Dinner with memorable family keepsakes (Due: Friday 19 Sept)

Funds raised will go towards the Year 6 Graduation Dinner - and you also get a special keepsake showcasing your child’s artwork!

Excitement has been bubbling across classrooms as students enthusiastically put the finishing touches on their beautiful artworks for the Crazy Camel Fundraiser. This vibrant initiative has not only sparks creativity but also brought a strong sense of community.

From bold brushstrokes to delicate details, each piece of art reflects the unique personality and imagination of its young creator. Students have poured their hearts into their work, knowing that their masterpieces will be transformed into keepsakes like calendars, cards, and tote bags—proudly displayed at home.

As the final artworks are submitted and the anticipation builds, one thing is clear: this year’s Crazy Camel fundraiser has been a joyful celebration of student talent and the magic of making something together.

The deadline for orders is Friday, 19 September.

Safely collecting your children from school

Safely collecting your children from school

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, I would like to remind parents of the processes that we have in place that have been carefully developed to ensure the safe and smooth collection of students in the afternoon.

Everyday many Junior School staff are rostered on to ensure that students are safely picked up from school. We carefully supervise students before they are picked up by their parents or siblings and when they catch the bus.

Please note the five ways that students are picked up from school and the safety arrangements that are in place:

To ensure safety and positive learning for all students it is important that parents do not congregate in the L Block quad or K Block undercover area until 3:10pm, or the H-J quad (or surrounding classroom areas) until 3:20pm. This is to ensure that students can continue learning in a calm, quiet environment.

These rules are important for ensuring the safety of all children. We are concerned that when these rules are not followed, children are put at risk. Please follow these rules and help us to keep all members of the school community safe.

Term 3 Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines

Term 3 Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines

In addition to the weekly updates, Senior School students have been emailed a calendar outlining all the representative sporting opportunities for Term 3.

Please note, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students should be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies for nominations to be accepted.

Nomination Guidelines:

  • All nominations should come from the student interested in trialing.
  • Students MUST email all nominations to the Head of Student Opportunities ( [email protected] ) AT LEAST 2 days before the nomination date . Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.
