Blessings

The Bible tells us that every good gift is from God and that we are called to use our special talents to glorify Him. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, ‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do’. This week in the Senior School, we have seen student and teacher gifts on display, a true testament to the blessings we have each been given.

Our Year 12 Music, Drama, IT Timber, Design and Technology, Textiles and Visual Arts students had their work displayed at our HSC Showcase and HSC Music celebration evenings. The talent on display was only surpassed by the humility shown by our staff and students when discussing the outcomes for their projects. The gift of mentoring was evident in the fruits of our students’ labours and reflective of the effort each student had put into their work.

Relational teaching is one of our five Teaching and Learning Principles and is clearly reflected in the bond built between our Year 12 students and their teachers, especially in this post-Trial HSC period when encouragement, direction and motivation is needed as we walk alongside our students towards their final exams in October.

Last week, I heard from a former RHAC student who had just graduated with a combined Law degree from UNSW and had been admitted by the Supreme Court of NSW. Her wonderful achievement was the result of her hard work and dedication, however, in this moment of celebration she was full of gratitude; enough to want to focus on all of the people and places that she felt had helped her on her way. She reflected on her time at the College, especially in her final year where she juggled a number of projects in Visual Arts, English Extension Two and Society and Culture.

We are appreciative of our past students who return to the College to share their experiences with us, many of whom use their gifts to assist in coaching or teaching in their areas of expertise. We welcome any of our alumni to consider contributing to our sporting, academic or extracurricular pursuits in the future.

1 Peter 4:10-11 ‘Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.’

Have a lovely week.

Learning Showcases

Learning Showcases

Over the past two weeks, our doors have been opened to parents joining us for the Learning Showcases, Shrek JR performances and the P&F Father’s Day breakfast. It's always a joy to welcome parents and families into our school life. It is very special to see the delight on a student’s face when their parents or grandparents come to school.

The Learning Showcases are an excellent opportunity for parents to see and experience a small snapshot of classroom life. This week, I enjoyed visiting each of the classrooms and welcoming families. As always, it was a pleasure to watch our teachers using their excellent skills as they utilised the College’s Teaching and Learning Principles in their lessons.

  • Explicit instruction – In these lessons, teachers clearly explained what the students would be learning and indicated how students would know they had been successful in their learning. They used a variety of strategies to check the understanding of all students in their classes.
  • High expectations – Our teachers have created routines that students understand and follow to help them behave in a way that supports our high expectations of their learning. Well managed routines help our students to focus their thinking on what they are learning rather than on the process of learning. In addition, our teachers have high academic expectation for each student and design lessons that are challenging and interesting.
  • Effective feedback – As students participate in their lessons, teachers spend time interacting with students and giving them feedback to improve their learning. This feedback is closely aligned to students’ understanding of what they need to do to be successful in their learning.
  • Relational teaching – While the learning environment is a little different during the Learning Showcases, our classrooms are caring and safe places for students to learn. Intentionally building strong relationships with students is integral to creating a positive learning environment. This relational teaching was extended as we welcomed parents and grandparents into the classrooms.
  • Data informed practice – It is a little more difficult to see data informed practice in a one-off visit to a classroom. Teachers collect data in their classroom through their observations and interactions with students. This can result in immediate changes to their plan for the lesson. Teachers also collect data over a longer period to identify students who need support or challenge, as well as concepts that need to be retaught.

The Shrek JR musical is a great case study of the value of these Teaching and Learning Principles. During the preparation for the musical, staff have been explicitly teaching students what to say, do and sing. The high expectations of teachers have helped students to create a musical that we are all incredibly proud of. In addition, throughout rehearsals students receive ongoing feedback to further develop their role. All of this is wrapped up in a warm, kind and generous approach by the teachers involved. It has been a joy to watch the final rehearsals this week and to see the way that teachers and students have worked together for such a wonderful result.

I am thankful to every classroom teacher who welcomed families into their classrooms. I am thankful for the Shrek JR team who have made such a wonderful event for us all to enjoy. And I am thankful to the work of the P&F as they cater for the Father’s Day breakfast.

From the Scriptures

I am unfinished (I am sanctified)

I am unfinished (I am sanctified)

Mark 2:15-17

While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

As I read this passage, my big realisation is that I am a sinner and as a sinner I need Jesus. The good news is that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Saviour and therefore, I am a Christian. So why then am I still a sinner? How do I make sense of passages like 2 Corinthians 5:17 which says;

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, that person is a new creation: The old has gone, the new is here!

Over this past term, we have been looking at our identity in Christ; I am in Christ, I am justified, I am adopted, I am secure, I am free and today we can also say, I am unfinished (I am sanctified).

If we took a step back and looked at ourselves, many of us would agree, we are not perfect, we all sin and the good news is that if you have given your life to Jesus, he has saved you and you are forgiven. So why then do we continue to sin? Because I am unfinished, I am still a work in progress. God has set us apart in Christ Jesus but is still in the process of making us more like Christ.

Philippians 1:6 says that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus .

As I wrestle with this concept and look forward to what Jesus is continuously doing in my life, I find the following illustration helpful and I hope you may find it helpful as well.

Imagine our heart is like a large two-storey house with many rooms. You hear a knock at the door. You open the door and there, Jesus is waiting to be invited in. You are a bit embarrassed as you haven’t really got around to cleaning the house, but you decide to invite him in and direct him to the least messy room in the house - the lounge room - and you offer Jesus a seat. You switch into hosting mode and pop into the kitchen to make some morning tea. A few minutes later, you come back into the lounge room only to find Jesus tiding things up around the coffee table. You are shocked by this and apologise about the mess and ask him to leave it, that you can do it yourself later.

To your surprise time flies and you find yourself really enjoying spending time with Jesus and he asks you if you would like to meet up again, you quickly agree and make a time.

Jesus continues to meet with you and slowly over time you realise that Jesus has been tidying and making small adjustments to the lounge room, that it now looks amazing and you thank Jesus for the changes he has made. Before long, he starts doing the same in another room. Some changes are small but occasionally, he starts to move the furniture around. When he has finished that room, it too looks amazing but then he comes to a room you know you don’t want him to see. You do your best to hide it, but Jesus reminds you, that you knew, if you invited him in, he would be making some changes. You reluctantly move away from blocking the door and as he opens the door, you cringe as a putrid smell starts to drift out. As the door opens the room is full of suit cases stuffed with all your hurt, anger, thoughts, shame etc. The floors are rotting and the walls are covered with the mould. Jesus turns to you; you are so embarrassed that you just want the ground to open up and swallow you whole.

But Jesus says “I have big plans for this room, it may take a while, but let’s start cleaning this up”.

I am unfinished, I am a work in progress, (I am sanctified).

Year 12 showcase HSC Major Works projects and performances

Year 12 showcase HSC Major Works projects and performances

Last Thursday 22nd August, many Year 12 students were able to display their Major Projects and performances as part of their HSC studies. The students refined their skills in Art, Music, Drama, Design and Technology, Industrial Technology Timber and Textiles and Design to complete their projects as part of their final HSC Assessment.

We had so many community members congratulate the class of 2024 on their outstanding perseverance and enjoyed fantastic performances. Well done to all the students who demonstrated their work, and set a great example for the students who are considering these subjects.

Congratulations to the Students and Staff who have been and continue to work hard to achieve success in these areas!

Photos and footage of all major works projects and performances are currently unable to be shared with the community due to pending HSC review of the students’ work.

Year 11 D&T students create innovative products

Year 11 D&T students create innovative products

In their recent project, Year 11 Design and Technology students took the concept of empowerment to heart and created a variety of innovative products that exemplify how design can make a difference in people's lives.

One student used 3D printing to design a canoe specifically for wheelchair users, offering greater accessibility to outdoor activities. Another created a lamp that not only provides light but also serves as a source of empowerment for individuals through its thoughtful design. An upbeat song was composed to uplift and inspire listeners, while a building space was designed to support mental health, offering a safe and calming environment for individuals.

Other students crafted empowering stickers, an app to foster sustainability habits, jewellery that symbolises strength, a makeup bag designed with empowerment in mind, and a board game that brings both empowerment and entertainment to those who test out the prototype – to name a few of the diverse projects!

These projects highlight the students' creativity and their ability to interpret the concept of empowerment in diverse and meaningful ways.

In this week's Senior School sports: HZSA Sport Rounds 3 and 4, Bill Turner Trophy, AICES Volleyball Cup and HZSA Athletics.

Check out the highlights, results and photos below.

HZSA Sport Rounds 3 Results

HZSA Sport Rounds 4 Results

Bill Turner Trophy

Our Bill Turner Trophy Football team travelled down to Seymour Shaw Park in Miranda to take on Woolooware High School in their Round of 16 fixture. We knew we were in for a tough game with our opposition posting big results in all their previous games. It was another back-and-forth affair with neither team letting up and plenty of moments to get you up off your seat. With 15 minutes to go we were up 3-2, with 10 minutes it was all level at 3-3. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, going down 3-4 in the final minutes.

I'm incredibly proud of this team, not just for the way they played the game, but for the character they displayed on and off the field. Every player gave their all, showing skill and determination, but what stood out most was their unwavering support for one another. They lifted each other up, celebrated each success, and offered encouragement during challenging moments. This was evident to the growing crowds who came to watch their game each round. Congratulations on a great season!

AICES Volleyball Cup

The Open Boys and Girls Volleyball teams took part in the very first AICES Volleyball Cup at Sydney Olympic Park earlier in the term. The teams took on part in this rounds robin competition which saw them take on opponents from across Sydney.

Our volleyball program has been going from strength to strength over the last few years, ably led by Mr Conoulty and this was a good test of where they were at. Both teams played well throughout the day challenging their opposition in every game to both finish 6th in the divisions. Congratulations and well done to both teams.

Thank you to Ms Selby and Mr Viesca who took the teams on the day.

HZSA Athletics

On Tuesday, we took a team of nearly 70 students to Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre to compete in the HZSA Athletics Carnival. On a perfect day for Athletics, we saw some great results, including Year 7 student Aryan B breaking the 13 years boy’s discus record with a throw of 38.98m.

We also had 4 students earn Age Champion or Runners Up on the day:

  • Taylor W: 14 Years Girls Age Champion Runner Up
  • Liam G: 16 Years Boys Age Champion Runner Up
  • Amelie P-S: 18 Years Girls Age Champion
  • Asher C: Multi Class Age Champion Runner Up

A combination of good results and a high level of participation across the carnival led to our best team result ever, with our Girls team finishing in 3rd place, our Boys team winning their division and the RHAC team finishing in 2nd place overall.

Congratulations to all our students and good luck to those who have qualified for the AICES Athletics Carnival on the 10th of September:

Stage 2 (Years 3-4) learning showcase & Book Week celebrations

Stage 2 (Years 3-4) learning showcase & Book Week celebrations

In Week 5 of Term 3, Year 3 and 4 classes hosted parents and families for a Learning Showcase, to coincide with Book Week . Students and staff were dressed as their favourite book characters as part of the fun.

In Year, 3 our lesson focused on the book "Bowerbird Blues" by Aura Parker. The children, along with their visitors, participated in an English lesson, focussing on writing a descriptive passage using nouns, verbs and adjectives to enhance their writing. The children then made paper plate bowerbirds and attached their descriptive writing to these. The children were so happy to host their visitors and to complete a lesson with assistance from them. All of the children looked great, dressed in their favourite book costumes.

In Year 4, learning content focused on mathematical concepts and calculations involving time. Teachers welcomed visitors and introduced the lesson with a read aloud of “ Timeless”, by Kelly Canby, The Children's Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year. Students used hands-on manipulatives to convey time and solve elapsed time in mathematical word problems. They finished off the lesson by involving visitors in playing “Time Dominos”. It was a wonderful time together.

Celebrating our love of reading

Celebrating our love of reading

What a wonderful week long celebration highlighting literacy learning, excellent books and their creators during Book Week . Students had a fun time dressing up as their favourite book character, guessing the teachers behind the mask, creating dioramas depicting their chosen CBCA shortlisted picture book and visiting the RHAC Junior School Book Shop.

We are extremely thankful to our wonderful parent volunteers who so ably assisted with the setting up, sales and packing down of the Book Shop. We were blessed with 30 books donated to our library collection by our College families, along with over $11,000 in book sales. The commission from these sales will allow us to purchase many new books for our Junior School students to read. The donated books are now being processed and covered, and will be available for borrowing shortly. They will go home with the students who donated them first, and then will be open for everyone to borrow. It was fabulous to see so many students and their families enjoying the experience of book shopping at school.

Diorama Display

Our H Block library has come alive with 3D dioramas created by Year 4 and 5 students as part of the CBCA Shadow Judging project. Congratulations to all the students - your dioramas are fabulous! We will keep the projects on display for the remainder of the term. If you missed seeing them during Book Week, we encourage you to pop into the library between 8:45-9:00am or after school from 3:20-3:40pm next week.

Reminder: Morning drop-off at K Block area

Reminder: Morning drop-off at K Block area

To help ensure that morning drop-off outside K Block is safe and not too congested, please consider the following:

  • For Pre-K families walking into the school, please only cross at the crossing. Please do not walk between parked and oncoming cars.
  • Consider dropping your child between 8:40am and 8:50am. Traffic tends to be significantly lighter during this 10 minute window. Parents coming a little earlier if they can will reduce traffic congestion when the bell is ringing at 9am.
  • Families who arrive at 9am or later allow their children to get out of the car near the corner, rather than coming down into the drop off area and stopping in a designated bay - Please do not do this. Children getting out of the car near the corner is dangerous and there is no one there to help them.
  • Please aim to drop your children at school before 9am so that they will not be late to class.

Thank you for your support in this regard.

Senior School Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines – Term 3, 2024

This calendar outlines the nomination (Nom), trial and competition dates for the RHAC Senior School representative sporting pathways (HZSA > AICES > CIS > NSW All Schools > SSA).

As this is a representative pathway, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies in order for nominations to be accepted. If this is the case, further information will be emailed to students by the Head of Student Opportunities.

Thank you from the P&F - Father's Day events

Thank you from the P&F - Father's Day events

Thank you to all those families who attended the Father’s Day breakfast this morning. With lots happening at the College this week - with Shrek JR performances and other activities - it was wonderful to still see so many families celebrating dad this morning.

We wish all the dad’s and special friends a fantastic Father’s Day this weekend and trust you get to spend quality time together.

The Father’s Day stall on Tuesday this week was also a great success.

A special thank you to our P&F Executive Committee and all the parents that volunteered at one or both events. Without your support, these wonderful activities simply cannot occur at RHAC - we are very thankful for your generous support.

As we turn our attention to the Spring Fair (Saturday, 9th November), we are very energised to make this our biggest event yet. If you are thinking about getting involved and supporting at the fair, please reach out to a committee member now.

Thanks so much from the P&F Association.

Warm regards,
Matt Perry

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
