A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

Sir Richard Steele would be an unfamiliar name to many people. Sir Richard was born in 1671 in Dublin, Ireland. Tragically, by the age of five, both of his parents had died. Sir Richard was raised by relatives who provided him with an excellent education. As an adult, Sir Richard was a captain in King William's army and pursued his passion for literature.

In 1701, Sir Richard wrote The Christian Hero , which discussed his views on masculinity and morality. He was soon accused of hypocrisy after being observed not practising what he preached. Despite this, Sir Richard was respected for his contributions to literature.

It is hard to know what impact Sir Richard's writings had on the lives of others. However, a statement he made a few hundred years ago seems very relevant to Book Week in 2025.

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

I walked through the playground and classrooms this week, seeing children excited and dressed up in book week costumes. I was particularly encouraged that there was genuine enthusiasm for reading hard copy books. I trust that the time, thought, and energy families invested into the costumes will foster a love of literature where students read because they want to, not out of obligation.

Wide and extended reading does exercise the mind. Reading equips students with the ability to think deeply and express themselves clearly and persuasively. These essential skills equip young people for a range of challenges throughout their adult lives.

Our senior school Head of Curriculum, Mr Johnston , and our Junior School Head of Learning, Mrs Vlok , have completed an analysis of the recent NAPLAN results . The results are very encouraging. Unfortunately, the statistics provided to us are difficult to simply and accurately share in a newsletter article. However, there were noticeable improvements in several areas. I suspect that these improvements were due, at least in part, to our school community's commitment to reading books. I sincerely thank our parents who foster a culture of reading hard copy books at home, which greatly supports our teachers as they work with our students to help them to understand increasingly complex literature and write with clarity, accuracy and depth.

Because of a major change in the way NAPLAN results are reported, I can only compare how our students performed in comparison to last year. It isn’t possible to compare our results with 2023 or earlier. A few key achievements to celebrate include:

  • The proportion of Year 3 students in the spelling test who reached the highest “exceeding” category increased by 4% in 2025. The only domain/test where Year 3 students were not significantly above the state average in the exceeding category was in writing.
  • Years 5, 7 and 9 RHAC students were collectively above the state average in the exceeding category in every domain (i.e. reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy).

As our community celebrates recent positive achievements in the NAPLAN tests, we should be inspired by Sir Richard Steele. A Christian man who, despite his personal tragedies and failings, achieved in life at least partly due to his belief that Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.

Mr Brett Hartley Principal

P&F Father's Day events

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, a warm and united community would not be possible without the active involvement of our parents/carers and the community. From the Scriptures

The Authority of King Jesus

The Authority of King Jesus

"Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)

In these powerful verses, Jesus proclaims His supreme authority over all creation. This declaration is not just a statement of power and authority; it is a call to action for His followers. The Great Commission is a reminder that, empowered by Christ's authority, we are not merely observers but active participants in His rescue mission.

Jesus commands us to go and make disciples. This is a task filled with purpose and urgency. We are to share the good news, baptise new believers, and teach them to live according to His teachings. The scope of this mission is vast—encompassing all nations. It challenges us to step beyond our comfort zones and cultural boundaries.

Lord, thank You for the authority You hold over heaven and earth, life and death. Help us to submit to your loving authority and embrace our role in the Great Commission with confidence, knowing that we do not go alone. Fill us with Your Spirit, guiding our words and actions as we seek to make disciples. May we reflect Your love and grace to whom we encounter, trusting in Your promise to be with us always. Amen.

Year 11 fires up the grill for Daffodil Day and cancer research

Year 11 fires up the grill for Daffodil Day and cancer research

It was great to see the year group come together and work so well in the preparations for Daffodil Day. The rain certainly didn’t dampen the mood, and the flowers the students made looked fantastic. The helpers on the day showed great initiative and really contributed to the success of the event.

It was also great to see a number of students purchasing Daffodil Day notes to send to friends adding to the spirit of the day. We also seemed to raise a good amount of money. Stay tuned for an update!

Well done Year 11!

Book Week in Junior School

Book Week

What a wonderful week of adventures through books! We have celebrated, reading, writing, illustrating and enjoyed many excellent books. Students had a fun time dressing up as their favourite book character, visiting the Junior School Book Shop and researching facts to fill their RHAC adventure passport.

Book Fair

We are extremely thankful to our wonderful parent volunteers who so ably assisted with the setting up, sales and packing down of the book shop. We were blessed with 35 books donated to our library collection by our college families, along with over $6,000 in book sales , the commission from these sales will allow us to purchase many new books for our Junior School students to read. The donated books are now being processed and covered, and will be available for borrowing shortly. They will go home with the students who donated them first, and then will be open for everyone to borrow. It was fabulous to see so many students and their families enjoying the experience of book shopping at school.

Stage 1 (Years 1 - 2)

Stage 2 (Years 3 - 4)

On Monday, the Year 4 students and teachers started the Book Week celebration by “Booking an Adventure.” Students arrived dressed as characters from their favourite books and enjoyed sharing their costumes and why they chose them with parents, grandparents and friends who visited during the Celebration of Reading . The costumes reflected a wide range of stories and characters, showing the students’ enthusiasm for reading. The Year 4 teachers joined in the fun, dressing as characters from The Very Cranky Bear . It was a lovely opportunity for the school community to come together and celebrate a love of books and we are so thankful to our librarians for all their work in organising the day and helping everything run smoothly.

Mrs Kylie Leach

Stage 3 (Years 5 - 6)

Last Tuesday, Year 5 had a very special event, Celebration Of Reading ! Parents generously took time off from work to visit our classrooms and saw some of our best work! We had ten minutes to show them our favourite pieces of work so far this year. We even got to have afternoon tea with our parents and friends! We all brought snacks and treats to share!

I know my favourite part was going to the bookstore, it was so hard to choose which books to buy! I  know I'm not the only one who has had that problem!

Thank you for attending our book week celebration this year!

Year 6 'Amazing Me' Seminar

Year 6 'Amazing Me' Seminar

Last Friday, Year 6 students approached the Amazing Me Seminar on puberty with a mix of nervous giggles and curiosity. Despite some initial embarrassment about the topic, they quickly found themselves at ease thanks to the humour and relatability of the presenters, whose funny stories and light-hearted approach broke the ice. Their willingness to listen attentively, ask thoughtful (and sometimes cheeky) questions, and engage in honest discussions created a safe and supportive space for learning about physical, emotional, and social growth. This blend of maturity and humour not only made the experience enjoyable but also reflected their growing sense of responsibility and self-awareness as they navigated this key stage of adolescence.

Junior School CRU

Junior School CRU

CRU is a group for students in Years 3 to 6, where we come together to learn about God and His Word. It is led by Miss Haggar and Mrs Pullen, with support from the CRU leaders. This year, the leaders are a group of Year 6 girls: Jenna E, Zali D, Annabel F, Jade P, Mia M, Mikayla B, Olivia V, and Elsie R.

The CRU leaders and younger students from other grades meet every fortnight on Wednesday during Break 1. At CRU we sing songs, play fun games, and most importantly, discuss God and His Word together. Each time we meet, our CRU group continues to grow.

Twice a year, the CRU leaders join students from other schools at Norwest Christian College for a conference day. On that day, we get to know one another, learn about leading with God's guidance, and enjoy super fun games.

CRU is a wonderful way to connect with other students and with God. We invite all students from Years 3 to 6 to come along to CRU!

Year 6 students represents College at GATEway 8

Last Thursday, a group of eight Year 6 students made their way to Macarthur Anglican College to partake in the GATEway8 challenge day.

The group divided and conquered six tasks in the disciplines of English, Maths, History, Science, Music and Visual Arts. These tasks were designed to stretch their knowledge, skills and application outside of their regular classroom experiences.

The 2025 theme was “AI- Risks and Benefits” and the challenges proved to be very relevant to our world right now. This group did an amazing job as a team, sharing skills and knowledge with respect and patience and placed 5th in every topic .

Well done to Colin Y,  Anika K, Hritvik L, Methuki W, Elizabeth H, Vivaan S, Jack P and Aarin K.

  • “It was a fun and challenging experience, I am glad I got to participate." (Anika K)
  • “I found creating a game board to be a surprisingly challenging task to implement my creative skills. I was expecting to create an artwork." (Colin Y)

Safely collecting your children from school

Safely collecting your children from school

As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, I would like to remind parents of the processes that we have in place that have been carefully developed to ensure the safe and smooth collection of students in the afternoon.

Everyday many Junior School staff are rostered on to ensure that students are safely picked up from school. We carefully supervise students before they are picked up by their parents or siblings and when they catch the bus.

Please note the five ways that students are picked up from school and the safety arrangements that are in place:

To ensure safety and positive learning for all students it is important that parents do not congregate in the L Block quad or K Block undercover area until 3:10pm, or the H-J quad (or surrounding classroom areas) until 3:20pm. This is to ensure that students can continue learning in a calm, quiet environment.

These rules are important for ensuring the safety of all children. We are concerned that when these rules are not followed, children are put at risk. Please follow these rules and help us to keep all members of the school community safe.

Dr Kaye Chalwell, Head of Junior School

Term 3 Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines

Term 3 Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines

In addition to the weekly updates, Senior School students have been emailed a calendar outlining all the representative sporting opportunities for Term 3.

Please note, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students should be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies for nominations to be accepted.

Nomination Guidelines:

  • All nominations should come from the student interested in trialing.
  • Students MUST email all nominations to the Head of Student Opportunities ( [email protected] ) AT LEAST 2 days before the nomination date . Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.
