AI: A Tool, Not Our Master

AI: A Tool, Not Our Master

I taught HSC Economics and Legal Studies for many years before becoming a Principal. I frequently told my students that the key to HSC and university success, and career advancement, in Economics and Law was to be able to write and speak with clarity, accuracy and depth. Therefore, I read with great interest an article by Mark Edele, Professor of History at Melbourne University, who shared his conviction that a core skill for his students is the ability to write clearly, accurately and persuasively.

Professor Edele expressed his concern that students are increasingly relying on generative AI to produce essays that they pass off as their own. He acknowledged that AI can produce “passable, if bland, essays”. Schools and universities are investing a considerable amount of time and effort to identify students who cheat using AI and penalise them accordingly.

It strikes me that students who cheat using AI are near sighted. If they don’t get caught, end up with good marks for little effort and graduate with a degree, have these students stopped to ask themselves “what now?”. Even if they manage to deceive their first employer, who assumes that the degree they received was a result of their own effort and ability, it will soon become apparent that the new graduate isn’t as flash as she or he first seemed.

When their employer asks a complex question, will they be able to respond with a cogent, accurate answer, or will they say “hang on for a minute”, duck into another room, type the question into Google Gemini and come back with a half-baked answer? Their new career might be short lived.

Professor Edele went further, contending that students dependent on AI lose their ability to create.

The stained AI use demonstratively makes us dumber. It leads to what teenagers call brain rot…… As we de-skill ourselves as writers and thinkers by using statistical models that predict the most likely sequence of words on the basis of past patterns, we lose our ability to create.

(The Australian 24/7/26)

Taking the easy route by allowing AI to achieve for you is not just harmful for an individual's long-term career. It is harmful for society. When we collectively lose our ability to create because of an over dependence on AI, our culture and way of life end up being shaped by machines, not by people whom God has given a range of skills that should be used to glorify Him and to shape a sophisticated, diverse and cohesive society.

Therefore our school, and society more broadly, need to keep considering how we can selectively use AI as a tool and never allow it to be our master.

Finally, to reassure you, this article was written entirely by me – I read, thought and then shaped, and reshaped, my words. I trust that RHAC students will continue to enjoy the challenge, and appreciate the importance, of thinking and writing without help from AI.

Mr Brett Hartley, Principal

From the Scriptures

It's never too late

It's never too late

"In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me."

Jonah 2:2

This week, I found myself reflecting on a conversation with a colleague about a student who was navigating the consequences of a poor choice. While the student understood that a mistake had been made, what weighed most heavily on them was not the consequence itself, but the deep sense of guilt and disappointment they felt because of their actions.

My colleague shared how difficult it was to watch this student struggle under the burden of their remorse. It was a timely reminder to me that, while mistakes are an inevitable part of learning and growing, many of our students can be incredibly hard on themselves when they fall short of their own expectations.

In Junior School Chapel last week, we encountered Jonah at one of the lowest points in his life. Having chosen to disobey God's command to go to Nineveh, Jonah attempted to run away, boarding a ship bound for Tarshish instead. Yet, as Jonah quickly discovered, it is impossible to flee from the God of the universe. Soon, he found himself caught in the midst of a violent and life threatening storm.

Despite the sailors' best efforts to save the ship, they eventually faced a difficult reality. Following Jonah's own instruction, they threw him overboard, knowing that he believed the storm had come as a result of his disobedience. The moment Jonah entered the water, the storm ceased. Then, in an extraordinary display of God's provision and mercy, Jonah was swallowed by a great fish and his life was spared.

It is from within the belly of that fish that we hear Jonah's heartfelt prayer. One can only imagine the emotions he must have felt: regret over his choices, guilt for his disobedience, and a deep sense that he deserved the consequences he was facing. He may have felt completely beyond redemption. Yet God did not abandon Jonah or treat him as his sins deserved. Instead, God provided a rescue.

From that place of desperation, Jonah cried out to the Lord:

"In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me."
Jonah 2:2

Jonah's story reminds us that no mistake is too great for God's mercy. While our choices have consequences, God's grace remains available to those who turn back to Him. In Romans 5:8 we read this: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God rescued Jonah in the depths of his disobedience and despair. This was an extraordinary example of God's mercy and patience, and yet it was just a foretaste of the kindness and mercy God would show the world when Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

As we teach students and parent our children, may we continue to encourage one another to look to Jesus, because it is in Him that we see the love and grace of God demonstrated. May we all continue to learn to acknowledge our mistakes with honesty and humility, knowing that no mistake is beyond His forgiveness in Christ.

Moments like these encourage us to walk alongside our students with compassion, helping them understand that mistakes do not define who they are. Rather, they provide valuable opportunities for growth, learning, and restoration. As a school community, we are committed to nurturing resilience, encouraging responsibility, and reminding our students that there is always hope, grace, and a pathway forward.

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Please remember that parents should not park on Worcester Rd, even if they are waiting in the car. Staff have observed that some parents park in a no stopping zone and wait in the car for their child in the afternoon. This is unsafe.

  • Junior School parents should pick their child up by entering through gate 5, as per our standard procedures.
  • Senior School parents can pick up their child by entering in gate 1.

Each week these charts will be accessible directly from the newsletter

Parents may need to contact a RHAC staff member for a range of reasons, including transport issues, student wellbeing and student learning needs. The charts below help parents to know who to contact if they have a concern. The parent manual, which is accessible from a link in this newsletter, provides parents with a substantial amount of information which may assist them. The manual provides guidance on how parents and care givers can make a complaint.

Bird Flu

Bird Flu

During the holidays, Independent Schools NSW wrote to member schools to provide guidance on the recent outbreak of bird flu. They advised Bird flu infections in humans are rare and typically occur following close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. However, for more abundant caution, I developed a response plan in the event of someone discovering a sick, injured or dead bird on the school site.

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Please note the changed traffic conditions in the K block car park. Traffic leaving the drop-off area now has the right of way. Traffic going to / from the hardcourts must now give way to any traffic exiting the drop-off area. Please follow the updated signage and painted lines as per normal road rules. We anticipate this change will help the traffic flow during peak times by giving priority to the higher volume roadways.

Please take extra care while drivers adapt to these changes.

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Unfortunately, some parents have been driving up the driveway too early to pick up their children. This is particularly stressful for Pre-K parents who have to park and pick up their children at 3:00pm.

Please note the following times for car pick-up:

  • Pre-K parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and pick up their children from 2:50pm.
  • K-2 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:15pm.
  • K-6 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:25pm.

Please do not drive up the driveway before your designated time as this holds up the traffic for other parents.

  • Pre-K parents from 2:50pm
  • K-2 parents from 3:15pm
  • K-6 parents from 3:25pm

Additional parking guidelines are provided in the Parent & Carers Handbook below.

Enrolment in 2027

RHAC staff value our students and hope that all students will stay with us until they finish Year 12. However, I appreciate that some of our parents choose to move their child to another school each year for a range of reasons. Please remember that the school requires a full term of notice of an enrolment withdrawal, or an additional term of fees will be charged. Therefore, if parents are intending to send their son or daughter to another school next year, the last day they can notify the school without being charged the additional fee is the last day of this term (Friday 25 September). However, it would help our school if you could advise the school earlier than this so that we will have more time to find another student to fill the space.

Gateway 8: Collaboration, Creativity and Challenge

Gateway 8: Collaboration, Creativity and Challenge

Our students recently had the opportunity to take part in Gateway 8, a team-based competition designed to challenge, stimulate and inspire the minds of school students. Held at Macarthur Anglican School in Cobbitty, Gateway 8 brings students together in teams to tackle challenges across 10 disciplines, including Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Production, Cartography and Legacy.

The competition provided our students with an exciting opportunity to test their knowledge and creativity while developing the skills that matter beyond the classroom collaboration, communication, resilience, problem-solving and teamwork.

We are delighted to celebrate two outstanding team achievements from Rouse Hill Anglican College.

Our Year 9/10 team placed first in the Music challenge, with the team comprising Alysia Nestor, Zachary Yuan, Govida Phogat, Kushaal Anjina Gowda and Ashwin Kanniapen.

Our Year 7/8 team placed second in the Humanities challenge, with Giuliana Padayachi, Akira Dhanuka, Yimingshan Wang, Colin Yan, Shreyansh Pandey, Avni Sunny, Isha Ramdev and Archie Vinson.

The students described the experience as both challenging and rewarding. One of the highlights was the Music challenge, where students worked together to create an original composition based on the concept of food decaying. Julian Dibella reflected on the moment their team was announced as the winner, describing it as the result of “an hour of collaboration, creativity, and synergy.”

For Archer Vinson, Gateway 8 was an opportunity to discover the value of allowing others to contribute: “I learned that sometimes I need to let others help and that when I step back, great things can happen.”

Other students reflected on how the experience strengthened their ability to work with new people, manage pressure and appreciate different perspectives. Giuliana Padayachi particularly enjoyed “working with people I know and people who I have just met” , while Kushaal Anjina Gowda recognised that teamwork is about more than simply working together — it also means being willing to accept unexpected ideas because they may ultimately lead to the solution.

Colin Yan described the experience as memorable and rewarding, noting how the team learned to understand and support one another through challenging moments. Charlotte Sam also highlighted how Gateway 8 encouraged students to move outside their comfort zones and develop their teamwork skills.

The competition challenged our students academically, but perhaps more importantly, it challenged them to listen, contribute, adapt and trust one another. Their achievements are a wonderful reflection of the creativity, determination and collaborative spirit of our students.

Congratulations to all of our Gateway 8 participants, and a special congratulations to our Year 9/10 Music team and Year 7/8 Humanities team on their outstanding results!

Riding High for RHAC!

Riding High for RHAC!

Congratulations to Liam M. (K1), who proudly represented Rouse Hill Anglican College at the Arndell Interschool Equestrian event at Hawkesbury Showground on Saturday 15 August.

Riding his pony, Spirit, Liam had a fantastic day, placing first in two events, including the Fancy Dress event, where they dressed as Spidey and Ghost Spider! Liam and Spirit also received ribbons across several other events throughout the day.

The day was a wonderful team effort, with Liam’s Nanny spending weeks preparing their fantastic costumes. Even when the rain arrived during the Fancy Dress event, it certainly didn’t dampen Liam and Spirit’s spirits! They were thrilled to be dressed up and ready to compete.

Liam was also supported by his best friend Sebastian G. (K1) and his family, who came along to cheer him on. It was wonderful to see the RHAC community supporting Liam as he represented the College.

Well done, Liam and Spirit! We look forward to seeing you represent RHAC at your next Interschool Equestrian event.

Calling out all horse riders!

Liam’s achievement has also highlighted the wonderful range of interests and talents within our RHAC community. If your child is involved in equestrian activities, we would love to hear from you and potentially have our own RHAC equestrian team ready to go for the next Interschools event.

If your family is involved in equestrian activities, we invite you to get in touch and share your story with us. We would love to connect members of our community who share this interest and celebrate the achievements, experiences and opportunities that come from being involved in the RHAC equestrian community. Please get in touch with me via email: [email protected] to share your story or find out more about connecting with other RHAC families who share a passion for riding.

Celebrating Chris’s Piano Success

Celebrating Chris’s Piano Success

I am  delighted to celebrate Chris, who recently participated in the St George Instrumental Eisteddfod on 14 August.

Chris was awarded 3rd Place in the Piano Solo (Restricted, 11 Years and Under) category, a wonderful achievement that reflects his dedication, perseverance and growing confidence as a young musician.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Ms Huen and Mrs Watson for their continued support, encouragement and belief in Chris. Through the opportunities, guidance and enthusiasm they bring to the College’s music program, they continue to inspire students to learn, practise and, most importantly, enjoy making music.

We are incredibly grateful for the positive influence they have had on Chris’s musical journey and his growth in confidence.

Pre-K Service Project: Caring for Animals in Need

Pre-K Service Project: Caring for Animals in Need

The Pre-K students demonstrated compassion, care, and kindness through a wonderful Community Service Project, collecting essential pet supplies to donate to the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter. This meaningful initiative not only supported animals awaiting their forever homes but also extended the children's learning about pets and responsible animal care.

In Discovery, the students enthusiastically explored what it means to care for pets. As curious little scientists and caregivers, they investigated the needs of animals, learning about the food, shelter, exercise, love, and attention pets require to stay healthy, safe, and happy. Through these experiences, the children developed empathy and a deeper appreciation for the wellbeing of animals.

During Chapel and daily class devotions, the students are regularly encouraged to reflect on our God-given responsibility to care for His creation. This project provided a practical opportunity for the children to put their learning and faith into action by helping animals in need within our local community.

As a reminder of this important message, the students reflected on Proverbs 12:10:

"The righteous care for the needs of their animals."

We are proud of our Pre-K students for showing such generosity and understanding as they made a positive difference in the lives of animals awaiting loving homes.
