Equipping Young Adults for Life Beyond School

Equipping Young Adults for Life Beyond School

One of the great privileges of education is that we are not simply preparing students for their next assessment, their next year level or even their final examinations. We are preparing them for life. As educators and parents, we want our young people to leave school equipped not only with knowledge, but with the confidence, resilience, independence and character to navigate the opportunities and challenges of adulthood.

Two of the most important foundations for this at RHAC are our Teaching and Learning Principles: Explicit Instruction and High Expectations.

Making learning visible

Explicit Instruction recognises that students do not automatically know how to learn, organise themselves, solve problems or approach complex tasks. These are skills that need to be taught.

In the classroom, this means teachers clearly explain what students are learning, model what success looks like, break complex processes into manageable steps, check understanding and provide opportunities for students to practise before working independently.

These practices extend well beyond academic learning. A young person who has been explicitly taught how to plan an assignment is developing the same habits they will later use to manage a university workload. A student who has been taught how to approach a difficult problem step by step is developing a transferable approach to challenges at work and in relationships. A student who learns to reflect on feedback is developing the capacity to grow throughout their adult life.

Explicit Instruction is ultimately about giving young people the tools to become increasingly independent.

The importance of high expectations

High expectations communicate something equally powerful: we believe you are capable of more. Having high expectations does not mean expecting perfection. Rather, it means setting clear standards, believing that students can meet them, and providing the support and encouragement necessary to help them get there.

Young people benefit enormously from adults who hold them accountable while simultaneously communicating confidence in their capacity to succeed. When we resist the temptation to lower expectations because something is difficult, we give students opportunities to develop perseverance, responsibility and self-discipline.

These qualities matter enormously beyond the school gates. Employers value people who can be trusted to follow through. Communities need people who take responsibility for their actions. Relationships require people who can listen, persevere and contribute. Adulthood requires the ability to do difficult things even when we do not feel like doing them.

There is an important relationship between Explicit Instruction and High Expectations. We teach students explicitly because we expect them to become independent. We provide scaffolds, models and support, but we gradually remove those supports as students develop the knowledge and skills to manage for themselves. This is an important part of growing into adulthood.

A partnership between school and home

The most powerful impact occurs when the messages students receive at school are reinforced at home. We can encourage young people to take increasing responsibility for organising their belongings, managing their time, communicating respectfully, solving problems and following through on commitments. At times, this may be more difficult than simply doing things for them. However, allowing young people to experience appropriate challenge is an important part of preparing them for life.

As parents and educators, we can ask ourselves: Are we making things easier for our young people, or are we helping them become more capable? Sometimes the most supportive response is not to remove the difficulty, but to provide the guidance and encouragement they need to work through it.

Preparing students for a life of purpose

At RHAC, our Teaching and Learning Principles remind us that education is about much more than the acquisition of knowledge. Through Explicit Instruction and High Expectations, we seek to develop young people who are capable, responsible and increasingly independent.

We want our students to leave us believing that they can learn, that effort matters, that challenges can be overcome and that they have a responsibility to contribute positively to the world around them.

Ultimately, we are not simply preparing students to succeed at school; we are preparing them to flourish as young adults of good character.

As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, ‘Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.’. Our shared task is to equip young people with the knowledge, habits, character and confidence to walk that path with wisdom, courage and purpose.

We give thanks to God for His care of our Year 12 students who have just completed their Trial HSC Examinations.

Have a lovely week,

Leisa

Care Begins with Noticing

Care Begins with Noticing

At our recent Junior School assembly, we explored how care begins with noticing. This helped to develop our term focus on treating each other with wisdom, care, courage and service. In the previous assembly, students were encouraged to act wisely by not only knowing the right thing to do but choosing to do it.

One of the challenges we all face is how easy it is to become focused on ourselves. We can spend much of our day thinking about our own experiences, worries, friendships, successes and disappointments. While this is understandable, and Junior School teachers are committed to supporting students who are experiencing these kinds of challenges, it is wonderful when we can help our students to look outwards to the people around them.

Before a child can show kindness, offer support or include someone who feels left out, they first need to notice what is happening around them. Our UR Strong wellbeing lessons focus on how to be a good friend and what to do when a friendship goes badly. New classroom displays, and soon larger outdoor displays, reinforce these messages and encourage students to think about how they relate to others. The value of this learning was evident this week when two students approached a teacher for help with their friendship group because they had noticed things were not going well. Rather than ignoring the situation, they noticed a problem and sought support.

Many opportunities to care for others are not dramatic or obvious. They appear in ordinary moments throughout the day: noticing someone sitting alone, recognising that a classmate is disappointed, seeing that a younger student needs help, or realising that someone would benefit from a kind word of encouragement.

I am continually encouraged by the many examples of this across our Junior School. This week, I have seen playground leaders give up part of their break to support younger students, a Year 2 student notice that a peer was having a difficult day and share a treasured toy to encourage him, and students kindly escort unwell friends to Sick Bay. These may seem like small actions, but each began with someone noticing the needs of another person.

When children learn to notice others, they are more likely to respond with kindness. They begin to understand that even small actions can make a meaningful difference. Over time, these everyday choices help build a community where everyone can feel seen, supported and valued. Parents play an important role in nurturing this outlook. Simple conversations at home can encourage children to lift their eyes from their own experiences and think about the people around them. Questions such as, “Who did you help today?”, “Who seemed to need encouragement?” or “How did you make someone feel included?” can gradually develop habits of noticing and care.

At RHAC, we want our students to grow not only in knowledge and understanding, but also in character. We hope they become young people who are aware of others, willing to act with kindness and motivated by genuine care. These qualities contribute to strong friendships, healthy classrooms and a school culture where every child feels valued.

From the Scriptures

The God Who Won't Let Them Go Either

The God Who Won't Let Them Go Either

"The God Who Won't Let Them Go Either."

Jonah 3–4

In my last Scripture News, we looked at the first half of Jonah's story, a prophet who ran from God, and a God who wouldn't let him go. This second half picks up right where that one left off.

By the time we reach chapter 3, Jonah has already been rescued once. God gave him a second chance, and this time Jonah obeys. He walks into Nineveh, a city of Israel's enemies, and preaches eight words of judgment: forty days, and the city will be overthrown.

What happens next is almost unbelievable. The whole city repents. From the king down to the cattle, everyone fasts and turns from evil. And God relents. He doesn't destroy Nineveh.

You'd think Jonah would celebrate. Instead, chapter 4 opens with him furious. He is so angry that he asks God to kill him. Why? Because Jonah knew this might happen. He knew God was "gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love" (4:2), and that's exactly what he didn't want for Nineveh. He wanted judgment for them and mercy for himself.

God's response is a question, not a rebuke: "Is it right for you to be angry?" And the book ends without telling us how Jonah answered. That's not an accident. It's a question aimed past Jonah, at every reader since, including us.

Here's where this lands for us as parents. Most of us aren't angry that a whole city was spared. But we know a smaller version of Jonah's anger. It's the flicker of resentment when another family's child gets the opportunity ours didn't. It's the impatience when we're asked to extend grace again to a child who keeps struggling, a teacher who dropped the ball, or a fellow parent whose child hurt our child. It's wanting justice for the people who wronged us and mercy for ourselves.

Jesus later pointed back to this story. He said something greater than Jonah was present in his own ministry (Luke 11:32). The people of Nineveh repented at a mere prophet's warning, while Jesus himself, offering far more, was often met with indifference. The pattern in Jonah isn't really about Nineveh. It's about a God who pursues people we've already written off, and who pursues us too, even in our resentment.

That's the real encouragement here. God didn't just chase down a pagan city. He chased down Jonah, sitting outside the walls, sulking, still His prophet, still loved. God doesn't give up on the reluctant and the resentful either.

So here's a question worth sitting with this week, alongside your student: Is there someone, another family, another student, maybe even our own child in a hard season, where we're quietly hoping for judgment instead of hoping for the same grace we've been given?

The book of Jonah never tells us how the story ends for Jonah. Maybe that's so we can write our own answer.

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Please remember that parents should not park on Worcester Rd, even if they are waiting in the car. Staff have observed that some parents park in a no stopping zone and wait in the car for their child in the afternoon. This is unsafe.

  • Junior School parents should pick their child up by entering through gate 5, as per our standard procedures.
  • Senior School parents can pick up their child by entering in gate 1.

Designed by Terroir, the building was created with a strong focus on contemporary learning, collaboration and student wellbeing. Its flexible learning spaces, specialist facilities and connection to the surrounding landscape provide an inspiring environment for our students and staff.

The International Architecture Awards are among the world’s longest-running and most respected global programs celebrating new and innovative architecture. As part of the recognition, the award-winning projects will be showcased internationally in Athens, Greece, through The City and The World exhibition, with the official celebrations taking place in Athens.

This is a wonderful achievement for our College and recognition of the vision, collaboration and expertise that brought our New Senior School Building to life.

Congratulations to Terroir, our project partners and everyone involved in this outstanding project. We are incredibly proud to see our New Senior School Building recognised on the international stage.

From Rouse Hill to the world, a remarkable achievement for RHAC.

Bird Flu

Bird Flu

During the holidays, Independent Schools NSW wrote to member schools to provide guidance on the recent outbreak of bird flu. They advised Bird flu infections in humans are rare and typically occur following close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. However, for more abundant caution, I developed a response plan in the event of someone discovering a sick, injured or dead bird on the school site.

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Please note the changed traffic conditions in the K block car park. Traffic leaving the drop-off area now has the right of way. Traffic going to / from the hardcourts must now give way to any traffic exiting the drop-off area. Please follow the updated signage and painted lines as per normal road rules. We anticipate this change will help the traffic flow during peak times by giving priority to the higher volume roadways.

Please take extra care while drivers adapt to these changes.

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Unfortunately, some parents have been driving up the driveway too early to pick up their children. This is particularly stressful for Pre-K parents who have to park and pick up their children at 3:00pm.

Please note the following times for car pick-up:

  • Pre-K parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and pick up their children from 2:50pm.
  • K-2 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:15pm.
  • K-6 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:25pm.

Please do not drive up the driveway before your designated time as this holds up the traffic for other parents.

  • Pre-K parents from 2:50pm
  • K-2 parents from 3:15pm
  • K-6 parents from 3:25pm

RHAC staff value our students and hope that all students will stay with us until they finish Year 12. However, I appreciate that some of our parents choose to move their child to another school each year for a range of reasons. Please remember that the school requires a full term of notice of an enrolment withdrawal, or an additional term of fees will be charged. Therefore, if parents are intending to send their son or daughter to another school next year, the last day they can notify the school without being charged the additional fee is the last day of this term (Friday 25 September). However, it would help our school if you could advise the school earlier than this so that we will have more time to find another student to fill the space.

Special Sponsor Spotlight

RHAC P&F Association

We are proud to recognise the RHAC P&F Association as a Special Sponsor of Disney & Pixar's Finding Nemo JR. Their ongoing support and commitment to our College community have helped make this year's production possible, providing our students with an unforgettable opportunity to share their talents on stage.

The RHAC P&F Association plays an important role in fostering connection, community and involvement among College families. Through social events, community initiatives and fundraising activities, the P&F enriches College life and supports opportunities that benefit our students and the wider school community.

The P&F is also hard at work preparing for the College's much-anticipated Spring Fair , taking place on Saturday, 12 September . This exciting community event promises a fun-filled day for families and friends, with entertainment, activities, food, market stalls and much more. The dedication and hard work of the P&F, together with the support of volunteers and local businesses, help make the Spring Fair one of the highlights of the College calendar.

The P&F warmly welcomes all parents and carers to get involved, regardless of their level of previous involvement. Whether by volunteering your time, assisting with events, or sharing your skills, every contribution makes a meaningful difference. Local businesses interested in sponsorship opportunities or providing goods and services are also encouraged to connect with the P&F.

Children's Book Week - Symphony of Stories

Book Week is fast approaching and we are so excited about all celebrating reading in the Junior School. Students will be involved in various activities across Weeks 5 and 6, in their classrooms and in their library lesson times.

CBCA Book of the Year Awards

The announcement for the Books of the Year is Friday 21st August. This is a much anticipated announcement as our students will find out if the books they voted for in their library lessons were also chosen by the official judging panel.

Book Week Theme

This year the theme for Book Week is ‘Symphony of Stories’.

Book Fair

We are thrilled to announce that this year the Book Fair is returning. Purchasing books from the book fair is a wonderful way to encourage reading in your home, but also supports the Junior School Library, as a portion of sales are returned to the College to purchase books for the K and H block libraries. There will also be a donations table with books from our wish list that can be purchased and donated directly to the library. All donated books are labelled with a ‘Donated by …’ book plate. We welcome you to visit and look forward to seeing you there!

Location: K Block

Times:

  • 8:30-8:50am and 3:20-3:45pm daily
  • During Library lessons for students
  • During Class Celebration of Reading parent visits – commencing Thursday 20th (Year 4) and Friday 21st (Kindergarten)

Tim Harris Author Visit

On Friday 4th September, to conclude our celebrations, Tim Harris author of the much loved, Mr Bambuckle’s series, will be visiting the College for the day. He will be sharing his love of reading and writing through workshops for each grade from Years 2-6. More information to follow in future newsletters.
