Fostering a culture of appreciation

Fostering a culture of appreciation

Fostering a culture of appreciation is something that our community readily pursues. Taking the opportunity to demonstrate thankfulness and show one another what we value is an important part of College life.

We are only in our second week of the term and already there is so much to be grateful for in the Senior School. This fortnight has seen our Year 12 students prepare for their upcoming Trial HSC examinations, attending workshops and revision sessions, finalising their Major Projects for Visual Arts, Society and Culture, Textiles, IT Timber, and Design and Technology, as well as rehearsing for their HSC Drama and Music performances in mid-August.

These students are able to focus on their studies and meet NESA deadlines due to the dedication and commitment of their teachers, our Learning Enrichment faculty, and the support of our Welfare team.

Relational teaching is what creates the environment for a learning community to flourish. It is the daily interactions that our teachers and students have with one another that develops trust and forms an important connection between a class and their teacher. Appreciation and mutuality are the natural byproducts of this approach and we know that current research shows that when students feel valued and connected to their teachers and peers, they are more likely to be motivated to learn, more focused in class and more successful academically.

Walking around the College it is easy to see many examples of relational teaching and a culture of appreciation. Our PDHPE faculty is enthusiastically engaging students in following the Olympic Games in Paris, with activities designed to track the achievements of our Olympians and an awesome display in the foyer of the Auditorium. If you visit E block most mornings before school starts, our dedicated Maths teachers are meeting with students from Years 7-12 to assist them with homework and assessment tasks. We are grateful for their desire to help our students improve, just like the support offered by Miss Doman and Mrs Young who both supervise Study Afternoons for our Stage 6 students. The rapport they have built over afternoon tea and quiet revision has been so beneficial for those in attendance.

As Christians we understand that all is done for the glory of our God. We foster a culture of appreciation because we know that He is good and deserving of praise. 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 reminds us, Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Please keep our Year 12 students in your prayers as they commence their Trial HSC Exams on Monday.

Have a great term!

An important message from Mr Hartley to Senior School families

The Anglican Schools Corporation sent all RHAC parents an email this week inviting them to complete a survey. Mr Hartley has provided more information about the survey (see ”College News – We value your feedback” section).

We would greatly appreciate our parents taking the time to respond to this survey.

New beginnings

New beginnings

I like new beginnings. The first page of a new writing book, a brand new pen, the beginning of a novel, the first piece of chocolate in a block. Each of these beginnings are filled with the promise of something good and fill me with expectation and hope for the future.

The start of a term is also a new beginning. After a holiday break, we come back with renewed energy and enthusiasm for school. A new term gives teachers, students and parents time to reassess what we do and how we do it. It provides an opportunity for each of us to look forward and consider what we might do differently.

New beginnings are also taking place at school as the staff start to action the plans they have for their students. I see the new beginnings in students who have come back with renewed energy and excitement for learning. Other new beginnings that have already happened this term include:

  • Amazing Me seminars for Years 5 and 6
  • Athletics Carnival
  • 100 days of kindergarten
  • Peer Support groups

It can take a conscious effort to embrace a new beginning. For example, in my house, we have recently decided to resist the temptation to turn on the TV and read more in the evenings. I am trying to scroll less on my phone and fill my mind with better things. Already I have seen the pile of books that grows next to my bed get a little smaller. Sometimes we might need a little nudge to remind us of the value of new beginnings. Yesterday, I chatted with a student who had made a wrong choice. We talked about doing things differently and what a difference that could make to them and those around them. I am hopeful that he will make “new beginnings” decisions as the term progresses.

New beginnings can be something that you choose to do as a family, or that you might help your child to move towards. Perhaps it is making the decision to consistently do music practice, to read together as a family, to complete all homework at a given time, or to play a game as a family before dinner. This week in STEM, Stage 3 students discussed the amount of time they spend on their screens. For some students it was startingly high. Perhaps this is a good time to consider a new beginning for screen use.

New beginnings can be challenging. Sometimes even with our best intentions and plans, we struggle to stick to a new beginning. I find the words from Lamentations 3:22-23 in the Bible reassuring and comforting. The passage reminds us that on one hand, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end”, but also that the God of new beginnings has love and mercy that is “new every morning” because of his great faithfulness. For me, knowing that God’s love is new every morning is a reminder that we can reset each day, or encourage those around us to do so, and strive to accomplish the new beginnings plans we have.

From the Scriptures

What does the Bible have to say about how we judge ourselves?

What does the Bible have to say about how we judge ourselves?

Last week, we started a new series looking at what God says about our identity and discovered that for those who put their trust in Jesus, they have a new identity and that identity is in Christ.

If I were to ask you, on a scale on 1-10 (1 being bad, 10 being perfect), how good do you think you are as a person? If I were to have a guess, most people would rate themselves between 6-8. Most of us don’t believe we are bad people so we tend not to pick between 1-4 and we tend not to think too highly of ourselves just in case so we tend to avoid 9-10. I think we tend to think of ourselves doing more ‘good’ than ‘bad’, so 6-8 sounds about right.

But what is the basis of our judgement? Is it based on how we compare ourselves to others? Or what I judge as being good (based on an individual’s own definition)?

Well, what does the Bible have to say on this matter?

Our condition

There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:22-23)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:18)

As we read the above verses, we learn these things about humanity – no one lives up to God’s expectations – all have sinned. The consequence of sin is death and everyone is judged and condemned before God unless they accept God’s pardon which is found in Jesus.

So, what can we do to get this pardon?

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast.

This verse clearly tells us, there is nothing we can do to earn God’s favour or pardon, rather it is a gift from God.

So, how do we get this gift?

all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished - he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. (Romans 3:24-26)

It is by putting our faith in Jesus that God pardons us. As we look at this verse, it tells us that we are ‘justified’ by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Jesus becomes our atoning sacrifice. He stands in our place so that we are set free. We do not receive this because of anything we have done or by any notion that we are worthy, in fact quite the opposite, we continually rebel against God. We receive this because of God’s righteousness and because this is God’s nature to do what is good and right, and because of Jesus’ atoning sacrifice we are declared justified, because of what Jesus did. So now, if we have faith and have put our trust in Jesus Christ, God see us and declares us Justified (Justified = Just if I’d never sinned).

And for those whose who are in Christ have a new identity. I am justified.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1)

Blessings.

Year 8 'Undokai' incursion

Year 8 'Undokai' incursion

In the first week back to Term 3, the Year 8 Japanese classes were involved in the highly anticipated Sports Day incursion, called ‘Undokai’! An ‘Undokai’ is the Japanese equivalent to an Australian Athletics Carnival, and so in teams, students competed in a variety of culture-specific games. In this fun and challenging atmosphere, students had the opportunity to enjoy a practical application of their learning, which they were guided through in a mix of English and Japanese! Year 8 are commended for the positive attitude, wholehearted engagement and excellent manners shown during the incursion.

Junior School Athletics Carnival

Junior School Athletics Carnival

Our carnival on Monday was such a highlight of the year for many students and teachers. It’s a great day to come together as a College community outside of the normal classroom routine. Although there was a very cold chill to the air, the day was perfect. It was wonderful watching the students run in their races, whether it was to try and finish in first place or running for fun with a group of their friends. The students did an amazing job putting their PE skills into practice in the field events.

Thank you to all the staff for your help and the Year 10 PASS students who were essential in the carnival being successful. A special shout out to Mr Mattiazzo on long jump and Mrs Strautins on shot put. Without your help, our carnival would not run smoothly and we are so thankful to have parents who specialise in these events.

To all parents/carers, thank you for bringing some energy and excitement with all the cheering. It really was really nice to have you there. Our Student Leaders did a phenomenal job leading their Houses on the day. It was also fantastic to watch the energy the Year 6 students brought to the carnival in their races and dancing; it was a great way to celebrate their last carnival in the Junior School.

The following records were broken on Monday:

NEW

  • Hugh G. - 12 Boys Shot Put - 8.81m
  • Chase M. - 12 Boys 800m - 2:38:45

OLD

  • Jamie K. - 12 Boys Shot Put - 8.76m
  • Harry L. - 12 Boys 800m - 2:45:91

Age champions and the winning House of the carnival will be announced at the next assembly.

The HZSA athletics carnival will be Monday, 26th August at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Students will be notified next week.

Senior School Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines – Term 3, 2024

This calendar outlines the nomination (Nom), trial and competition dates for the RHAC Senior School representative sporting pathways (HZSA > AICES > CIS > NSW All Schools > SSA).

As this is a representative pathway, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies in order for nominations to be accepted. If this is the case, further information will be emailed to students by the Head of Student Opportunities.

Please download the Senior School Representative Sports Calendar –Term 3, 2024 below.

Nomination Guidelines

Students MUST email all nominations (Noms) to the Head of Student Opportunities ( [email protected] ) AT LEAST 3 days before the nomination date. Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Nominations need to include the following information:

  • Name
  • Event
  • Date of birth
  • Year Group
  • Parents email
  • Playing positions (1st and 2nd preference)

We value your feedback

We value your feedback

RHAC is one of 18 schools who are members of the Anglican Schools Corporation (ASC). The ASC provides advice and support in relation to areas such as financial management, HR, government regulation, child protection, Christian education and WHS.

Approximately once every five years, a team of experienced professionals, including teachers and accountants, spend three days at each ASC school to gain a strong understanding of the school and provide suggestions on how the school can further improve what they do and how they do it. A team will visit RHAC this September.

The team is keen to receive feedback from RHAC parents prior to their visit. The ASC has designed a survey that was emailed to parents this week. It is important that we hear from as many families as possible. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete the anonymous survey. However, please remember that parents are encouraged to raise issues or concerns when they arise, rather than wait to be invited to complete a survey. There are charts in the Parent and Carer Handbook ('Who to contact' section) which show parents who they can write to at any time to share their perspective.

Recognising community support

Recognising community support

It was pleasing once again this year to be able to run our College Athletics carnival using timing gate technology. These gates significantly improve the accuracy of timing and results for our events along with the efficiency of being able facilitate a faster carnival with less delay at the finish line to record times and places. For the first time, we were also able to use these gates for the Junior School Athletics Carnival as well, making this carnival also a professional and well run carnival.

This can only be achieved through the support of one of our local community sporting groups – Quakers Hill Little Athletics Centre (QHLAC). QHLAC have been long time supporters of our College, allowing us to use their timing gates for our carnivals. It is great to be able to have their support, with numerous students from the College members of this athletics club. With the representative athletics carnivals upon us – the Hills Zone Athletics Carnivals, AICES Carnival and the NSWCIS Carnival early September – it is a great opportunity for students to sign up and join the sport of Track and Field for the upcoming season.

QHLAC have opened their registrations for the season and competition commences early September. Please support those community groups who support us. For more information on QHLAC, please click on the links below.

2024/25 Season Information

The 2024/25 season runs on Friday nights commencing at 6:30pm for all ages. First night of the season will be early September, going through to March 2025.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
