Wisdom in Action: Building a Kind and Respectful Community

Wisdom in Action: Building a Kind and Respectful Community

The Junior School is a place where our students can grow in their knowledge and understanding of the world God has created for us to enjoy and care for. An important aspect of the learning that takes place is students learning how to treat and care for themselves and others.

Helping our students care for one another starts with developing wisdom. As we begin this term, we have been talking with students about what wisdom really means. To be wise means more than being intelligent or knowledgeable, I believe that wisdom is knowing what is right and then choosing to do it.

Every day, children face situations that require wise choices. They may see someone being excluded from a game, hear an unkind comment, be tempted to join in gossip, or find themselves frustrated with a friend. In these moments, wisdom helps them pause and consider how their actions affect others.

The THINK tool that is often used in discussions about social media use can help students to make wise choice in any situation. At last week’s assembly, I encouraged students to ask themselves the following before speaking or acting:

  • Is it True ?
  • Is it Helpful ?
  • Is it Inspiring ?
  • Is it Necessary ?
  • Is it Kind ?

These questions have the potential to make a remarkable difference. Imagine the impact if we all stopped and thought before speaking in the playground, responding to a disagreement, or sharing in a group. Our relationships would become stronger if kindness, honesty and respect guided our words and actions.

Of course, wisdom is not just for children. As adults, we model these same behaviours every day. Children closely observe how we speak about others, how we respond when we disagree, and how we handle frustration and disappointment. They learn as much from what we do as from what we say.

This can be particularly important in conversations with other families, discussions on social media, interactions at sporting events, or communication with staff. Before we speak, post, email, or comment, we might ask ourselves the same THINK questions. Are our words true, helpful, inspiring, necessary and kind? Are they building trust and understanding, or increasing conflict and division?

Another important lesson we are teaching students is that wisdom does not mean being perfect. The reality is that all of us, children and adults alike, make mistakes. We sometimes say things we regret, react too quickly, or fail to show the kindness we intended. Wisdom is not found in never getting things wrong; wisdom is found in recognising when we have and being willing to make things right.

One of the wisest words a person can say is "sorry." A genuine apology acknowledges the hurt caused, accepts responsibility, and seeks to repair the relationship. Our sincere expressions of sorry can have a powerful impact on children. When children see adults who are willing to apologise, forgive, and learn from mistakes, they gain a powerful example of humility and character.

As a school community, we all contribute to the culture we create. When students and parents alike choose kindness, respect, honesty and grace, we build a place where people feel safe, valued and connected. This is the kind of community we want our children to experience and the kind of community we want them to help create. More kindness. More trust. More strong friendships. More people feeling valued and respected.

As James 1:5 reminds us, God generously provides wisdom to those who ask for it. May we all seek that wisdom this term as we guide our children and model the behaviours we hope to see in them.

Dr Kaye Chalwell, Head of Junior School

From the Scriptures

Running From, Running To

Running From, Running To

Has there been a time you knew what you should do, but went the other way and what brought you back?

Lord, thank You for chasing us down even when we run. Help our children and us, learn to pray sooner than the belly of the fish. Amen.

Jonah's story starts with a straightforward command: go to Nineveh. Instead, he heads to Joppa and books passage to Tarshish, about as far in the opposite direction as the map allowed. He isn't confused about what God asked. He simply doesn't want to do it, so he runs.

What follows is a storm, a crew of terrified sailors, a plunge into the sea, and three days in the belly of a great fish. It's easy to read this as a strange, almost cartoonish rescue story. But underneath it is something every parent recognizes: the ache of watching someone you love choose the hard way, and the relief when they're finally brought back.

There's a detail worth sitting with. Jonah doesn't pray until chapter 2, until he's already sinking, already surrounded by water and weeds, already as far from control as he can get. That's often when honesty shows up in us too. Not in the calm moments, but in the ones where we've run out of road.

For parents, this story offers a quiet kind of comfort. Our children like Jonah, like us will sometimes hear what's right and run the other way anyway. That's not a parenting failure; it's the human condition Scripture has always been honest about. What Jonah's story shows is that God doesn't abandon someone mid-storm. He sends a fish before he sends a lecture. Rescue comes before the second chance to obey.

As your kids hear this story in chapel this week, they'll likely land on the drama storm, sailors, sea monster. That's fine; it's a great story. But the deeper thread worth drawing out at home is this: God pursues people even in their running, and being caught by grace is always the first step back toward obedience, not the punishment for having left it.

Mr Ivan Harris, Head of Christian Education (Senior School)

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Please remember that parents should not park on Worcester Rd, even if they are waiting in the car. Staff have observed that some parents park in a no stopping zone and wait in the car for their child in the afternoon. This is unsafe.

  • Junior School parents should pick their child up by entering through gate 5, as per our standard procedures.
  • Senior School parents can pick up their child by entering in gate 1.

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Please note the changed traffic conditions in the K block car park. Traffic leaving the drop-off area now has the right of way. Traffic going to / from the hardcourts must now give way to any traffic exiting the drop-off area. Please follow the updated signage and painted lines as per normal road rules. We anticipate this change will help the traffic flow during peak times by giving priority to the higher volume roadways.

Please take extra care while drivers adapt to these changes.

Bird Flu

During the holidays, Independent Schools NSW wrote to member schools to provide guidance on the recent outbreak of bird flu. They advised Bird flu infections in humans are rare and typically occur following close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. However, for more abundant caution, I developed a response plan in the event of someone discovering a sick, injured or dead bird on the school site.

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Unfortunately, some parents have been driving up the driveway too early to pick up their children. This is particularly stressful for Pre-K parents who have to park and pick up their children at 3:00pm.

Please note the following times for car pick-up:

  • Pre-K parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and pick up their children from 2:50pm.
  • K-2 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:15pm.
  • K-6 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:25pm.

Please do not drive up the driveway before your designated time as this holds up the traffic for other parents.

  • Pre-K parents from 2:50pm
  • K-2 parents from 3:15pm
  • K-6 parents from 3:25pm

RHAC staff value our students and hope that all students will stay with us until they finish Year 12. However, I appreciate that some of our parents choose to move their child to another school each year for a range of reasons. Please remember that the school requires a full term of notice of an enrolment withdrawal, or an additional term of fees will be charged. Therefore, if parents are intending to send their son or daughter to another school next year, the last day they can notify the school without being charged the additional fee is the last day of this term (Friday 25 September). However, it would help our school if you could advise the school earlier than this so that we will have more time to find another student to fill the space.

School Sports Australia Swimming Championships

Year 8 student Riley Welch continued his outstanding swimming season this week at the School Sports Australia Swimming Championships in Victoria, competing against some of the nation's best school-age swimmers.

Riley delivered another impressive performance in the pool, claiming a bronze medal in the 400m Individual Medley before backing it up with a silver medal in the 200m Butterfly.

These achievements are a testament not only to Riley's talent, but also to the dedication, discipline and commitment he brings to his training every day. Performing at a national level requires countless hours in the pool, early mornings, and an unwavering determination to continually improve, and Riley's results reflect the hard work he has invested throughout the season.

NSW All Schools Cross Country

Abbey Lincoln and Jalen Karbon capped off an outstanding cross country season by representing the College at the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships.

After progressing through multiple levels of competition to earn their place at the state meet, both students rose to the challenge with impressive performances. Abbey finished 12th in the 13 Years Girls event, while Jalen secured 26th place in the 13 Years Boys race.

Their results are a fitting reward for a season of consistent effort, perseverance and determination. Cross country success is built over many months of training and competition, and both Abbey and Jalen have demonstrated a commitment to continual improvement throughout the year.

To finish among the state's leading runners in their age groups is a tremendous achievement, and one they should be extremely proud of. We congratulate Abbey and Jalen on their efforts and thank them for the outstanding way they represented the College throughout the cross country season.

Representative Sport Results

The Semester 2 sporting season kicked off on Thursday afternoon, with our Youth Rugby Union team hosting William Clarke College in Round 1 of the Northwest Schools Rugby Championship.

In a physical opening to the contest, William Clarke scored against the run of play within the first five minutes to take an early lead. Our boys responded in style, with fullback Flynn I crossing for a spectacular long-range try before Gerhard G added the conversion from the sideline.

Strong defence and powerful ball carries from our forwards ensured the match remained an intense back-and-forth battle throughout. Flynn added a second try, while Gerhard also crossed the line as both teams fought hard for every point.

Trailing 19-17 with less than 10 seconds remaining, the team refused to give in. After scoring a late try to narrow the margin, Flynn produced a brilliant 60-metre kick return from the restart to put us deep in attacking territory. A strong clean-out from the forwards and quick distribution from halves Tyler L and Austin C created the opportunity, with Gerhard receiving the ball at speed, breaking through the defensive line and diving over under the posts.

The dramatic last play try secured a thrilling Round 1 victory and was a fitting reward for the team's resilience, determination and belief right to the final whistle.

Senior School Athletics Carnival

Last week, our Senior School students enjoyed an exciting and action-packed Athletics Carnival at Blacktown International Sports Park.

From the opening events, it was clear the day would be one to remember. Students competed with enthusiasm and determination across a wide range of track and field events, including sprints, middle-distance races, relays, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus and javelin. Throughout the carnival, students pushed themselves to achieve their personal bests, with several impressive performances and new carnival records set along the way.

One of the highlights of the day was the incredible House spirit on display. Students proudly cheered on their teammates throughout the competition, creating an energetic and supportive atmosphere. As the day progressed, the anticipation continued to build ahead of the relay races, with Houses competing in an enthusiastic chanting competition that echoed around the venue.

The relays provided the perfect finale to an outstanding day of competition. With thrilling finishes and incredibly close races, the determination and teamwork displayed by every House made for a memorable conclusion to the carnival.

Congratulations to all of our students for their outstanding participation, sportsmanship and encouragement throughout the day. Thank you also to our dedicated staff and student officials, whose hard work and support ensured the carnival was such a tremendous success.

Congratulations to all of our Age Champions and to the winning House for their outstanding achievements. We look forward to seeing many of our students represent the College at upcoming representative athletics events.

Junior School Athletics Carnival

Last week, our Junior School students enjoyed an action-packed day at the annual Athletics Carnival at Blacktown International Sports Park.

The day began with a record being broken in the 1500m race before the College buses had even arrived, setting the tone for an incredible day of competition. From exciting track races to field events, students gave their very best, encouraging one another and proudly representing their Houses. Throughout the day, determination and perseverance were on full display, with several more carnival records being set.

One of the highlights of the day was the much-loved tradition of our Year 6 students leading the College in dances between events. They had everyone moving, smiling and cheering together. The Houses also took part in what was arguably the loudest chanting competition we have ever seen, creating an unforgettable atmosphere as excitement built ahead of the relay races.

The relays certainly did not disappoint, with some fantastic finishes and less than a second separating several teams across the finish line. It was the perfect way to conclude a memorable carnival.

Congratulations to all of our students for their outstanding participation, sportsmanship and encouragement throughout the day. Thank you also to our dedicated staff and Senior School PASS students, whose support helped make the carnival such a memorable success.

The winning House and Age Champions will be announced once all high jump competitions have been completed.

NSWPSSA Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to Charlotte G. (Year 6) on her outstanding performance at the NSWPSSA Cross Country Championships, held on Wednesday 22 July at the International Equestrian Centre.

In an incredible display of determination and endurance, she shaved one minute off her personal best while helping the CIS team achieve an outstanding second-place finish overall.

Charlotte's dedication, perseverance and commitment to excellence are truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud of her remarkable achievement and the way she represented both her school and the CIS team.

Congratulations, Charlotte!

Behind the scenes, our team has been working hard to bring together what promises to be one of the biggest community events on our school calendar and we can't wait to welcome everyone on Saturday, 12 September .

A sincere thank you to everyone who has already volunteered, sponsored, donated or supported our preparations. Every contribution, big or small, helps make the Spring Fair possible.

We are also looking forward to celebrating Father's Day with our College community:
Father's Day Stall – Friday, 28 August 2026 (Week 6) Father's Day Breakfast/BBQ – Friday, 4 September 2026 (Week 7)

Tickets for the Father's Day Breakfast will go on sale next week. These much-loved events are a wonderful opportunity for our students to celebrate the special people in their lives.

The P&F is also delighted to support this year's Junior School production of Finding Nemo Jr. We wish the cast and crew every success as they prepare for what promises to be a fantastic production.

As always, thank you for your continued support of the P&F. The success of our events and initiatives is only possible because of the generosity and community spirit of our wonderful College families. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events as we continue to celebrate what makes Rouse Hill Anglican College such a special community.

If you would like to be involved and support the Spring Fair or the P&F in general, we would love to hear from you. Whether you can spare an hour of your time or assist with preparations behind the scenes, every helping hand makes a difference. Please contact us via the email address below to register your interest.

Kind regards,

Mrs Sneha Pandey
