A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

I trust that the winter school holidays gave our families an opportunity to enjoy a break from school routines, even if our hardworking parents continued going to work as normal. For those who were able to get away, I trust that your holiday was restful and enjoyable.

For the first time in 30 years, my wife and I took a few weeks off during the winter break and travelled overseas. We had a fabulous time, and I was pleased that many of our students enjoyed seeing the photos I showed at assembly this week. Kindergarten students seemed particularly excited by the photos of the pink dolphin and the baby alligator.

God’s created world is incredible!

O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In wisdom have you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.

Here is the sea, great and wide,
which teems with creatures innumerable,
living things both small and great.

Psalm 104: 24-25

Travelling overseas is a wonderful learning experience. Seeing firsthand how others live helps travellers to develop a greater sense of respect and empathy for people whose lives are unfamiliar and who see the world through a different lens.

Sometimes travelling to another country reminds me of how fortunate I am to live in Australia. While the main country we visited has many excellent qualities, it is a country that has limited opportunities for young people unless their parents are especially wealthy. The country has several private, full fee paying universities that are only accessible to a small percentage of families with very high incomes. In one of the cities we visited, with a population almost three times greater than Sydney, there are two low-cost universities. Each year approximately 60,000 young people in their final year at school compete for 6,000 places at these universities. Of the 54,000 students who miss out on a place, the large majority end up in low income occupations. Many remain in those jobs for the rest of their lives.

Comparatively, there are significantly more opportunities for young people in Australia when they finish school, regardless of their parent’s income. This is not to say that accessing education in Australia is easy or cheap. I am indebted to every parent for investing in a RHAC education for their children. University fees in Australia seem to be increasingly expensive; however, I think it is fair to say that, despite this, Australian students are comparatively more fortunate than students in many other countries.

I would like to acknowledge the demands placed on Year 12 students in NSW. The HSC is rigorous and competitive. July and August of Year 12 is arguably the most demanding 8 weeks in a student’s 13 years of schooling. Please pray for our HSC students as they write their trial HSC exams.

We all want every student to achieve to the best of his or her ability. Parents play a vital part in helping our students to maximise their academic grades. Your perception and support of your child throughout their schooling makes a significant difference to their success. As I conclude my article for this week, I encourage parents to help their children build study capacity through until they reach Year 12. One simple way parents can do this is to help their son or daughter to increase his/her study time at home as they get older. While it is important that younger students develop perseverance and self discipline in their studies, it is equally important that they do not burn themselves out with excessive study at an earlier age. Allowing students time to pursue something they enjoy such as sport or music as well as study is important.

Finally, I encourage our parents and carers to read a message from me in the newsletter below under the “we value your feedback” section.

From the Scriptures

What does God say about our identity?

What does God say about our identity?

I hope you all had a good holiday break.

So far this year in Chapel, we have been looking at the Gospel of John. In Term 1, we looked at the last 24 hours of Jesus’ life and asked the question, ‘What if it is true?’ and at Easter, we looked at the death and resurrection of Jesus and came to the conclusion, if it is true, then the resurrection changes everything.

With the realisation that the resurrection changes everything, in Term 2 we continued to investigate the Gospel of John and focussed in on the great ‘I am’ statements of Jesus. These statements pointed to Jesus not only claiming to be divine by his actions they demonstrate his divinity.

This term, in the light of what we have learnt in the first half of this year in Chapel, what does God say about our identity. We live in a world where the word identity can represent a smorgasbord of options. Here are just a few:

  • Our documents (passports, birth certificate, etc.)
  • How we identify ourselves (our jobs, titles, gender, family relationships)
  • Who we follow or idolise (influences, pop and sports stars, sporting teams)
  • Nationality or religion (Australian, New Zealand, Christian, Hindu, Sikh, etc.)
  • The persona we want others to see (selfies and social media)
  • The company we keep (hanging out with the cool kids, part of a gang, jamming with musos, etc.)

But what does the Bible say about our identity? Here are just a few we will be exploring this term

  • I am in Christ
  • I am justified
  • I am adopted
  • I am secure
  • I am free
  • I am unfinished

Identity in Christ: I am in Christ

For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.

1 Corinthians 15:21-22

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

2 Corinthians 5:17, 20

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. (Romans 6:11)

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit . (Ephesians 1:13)

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10)

Other passages that affirm our identity in Christ:

  • Romans 8:1
  • Colossians 2:6
  • John 15:1-8

Blessings.

Students battle it out on the dance floor on House Day

Students battle it out on the dance floor on House Day

What a way to finish Term 2! The tone was set early with our Year 12 students performing a medley of dances that represented our House themes – Spies / Explorers / Villains / Heroes.

It was great to see our students getting involved and competing in House competitions throughout the day including Touch Football, Biscuit Decorating, Just Dance, Painting, Robotics, Chess, Basketball and Table Tennis but ultimately, it came down to the House dance performances where we saw our students battle it out (on the dance floor) for the House Day Cup.

Congratulations to Farr-Jones who were crowned House Day Champions for 2024.

Senior School students race, leap and triumph at the Athletics Carnival

Senior School students race, leap and triumph at the Athletics Carnival

We were blessed with beautiful weather for our Athletics Carnival on the first day back this term. With over 600 students competing in events, the Blacktown International Athletics Centre was buzzing with excitement from the first 1500m event right through until the relays at the end of the day. We also saw some firsts with a dinosaur being chased by Captain Underpants down the 100m straight!

A big thank you goes out to all of our staff, our Prefects and House Captains for their amazing organisation and running of the day. With a few events still to run back at the College, stand by for our final results and Age Champions.

Year 9 Visual Arts 17th-century Dutch Still Life Vanitas paintings

Year 9 Visual Arts 17th-century Dutch Still Life Vanitas paintings

Last semester, Year 9 Visual Arts students were learning about 17th-century Dutch Still Life Vanitas paintings. The title 'Vanitas' comes from a quotation from the Book of Ecclesiastes 1:2: 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.' Traditionally, these artworks were created to warn the viewer not to value material possessions as they are an obstacle to our salvation. Our students' artwork not only referenced these conventions but also challenged them, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject matter.

The traditions referenced include wilting plants, worn or old objects symbolising time passing and the fragility of life or objects representing wealth, realistic imagery and chiaroscuro lighting. Students challenged other conventions by taking and editing photos to exaggerate colour and form and then allowing the plant to float on its own, unlike the traditional Vanitas, which include a variety of traditional symbolism. I am so proud of every student in the class.

Sasebo Shogyo Japanese International School Visit (25 Jul - 2 Aug)

Sasebo Shogyo Japanese International School Visit (25 Jul - 2 Aug)

This week, RHAC welcomed our visiting friends from Sasebo Shogyo International School in Japan. RHAC will have the pleasure of hosting 22 students and two teachers from the High School throughout Weeks 1 and 2, where our guests will have the opportunity to participate in intensive English language lessons, and accompany their Year 11 RHAC buddies to classes, assemblies and other activities on the RHAC calendar during their stay. The visiting students have been generously billeted by families beyond the College community. The visit culminates with the Japanese students participating in a session with our Year 8 Japanese language students when a series of fun and exciting, intercultural language games and activities are planned to take place.

Both lots of students have expressed excitement about the prospect of improving their language skills, experiencing a taste of each other’s cultures as well as gaining a deeper understanding of those around them.

Many a new friendship have already begun to be formed with the students, and the College is very pleased to be able to continue this relationship with VS Oceania and Sasebo Shogyo International School.

Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival - Monday 29th July

Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival - Monday 29th July

The Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held next term, on Monday 29th July at Blacktown International Sports Park.

This week, students have begun signing up to the field events they wish to compete in (discus, shot put, high jump and long jump). High jump is the only event that we complete at school during Sport, as the event runs longer than other events on the day. Students may sign up to as many of these 4 events as they wish.

There are two options for students to choose from: the competition and the participation.

For the competitive session , there is a set time of 40 minutes for each field event. If students have already signed up, this allows teachers to get straight into the competition rather than spend 15 minutes writing down students’ names and competitor numbers. It also allows for serious competitors to finish and place, potentially making it through to the HZSA Carnival.

The participation session will have an allocated time at the field event of 1 hour and 20 minutes. There is no need to sign up to participate. Students are able to walk up to the event with their friends, have a throw or a jump and collect a House Point for their participation. The throws and jumps will not be measured, allowing more students to have a turn and experience the different field events at the carnival. It is similar to the ‘Lizard Lane’ that was trialled at the swimming carnival. It was a success because students who were not necessarily confident to compete in the races found enjoyment and fun in participating in the event with their friends.

Students do not need to sign up for track events on the day, as these run smoothly within the allocated time. Below is a copy of the program that will be used on the day, to show the approximate competition times and participation times.

If you are unsure which session your child should be in or if you have any questions or concerns, please send an email to [email protected]

New NSW K-6 syllabus

New NSW K-6 syllabus

On Wednesday 24th July, the new NSW K-6 syllabus was launched, and we are looking forward to engaging with the next step in the process. The Junior School is already teaching to the new English and Mathematics K-2 syllabus and Years 3-6 are in the implementation stage.

We are excited as we look ahead because the new K-6 syllabus aligns well with our 5 Teaching and Learning Principles : explicit instruction, high expectations, effective feedback, data informed practice and relational teaching . At the recent launch, I was very honoured to meet The Hon. Prue Car, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning. She was very complimentary and appreciative towards all the work that teachers did during the user testing stage which Rouse Hill Anglican College was a part of. Thank you for your continued support as we work as a community to achieve the best for our students.

If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.

If you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]

Ensemble Fees

We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.

It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

Senior School Representative Sports Calendar & Nomination Guidelines – Term 3, 2024

This calendar outlines the nomination (Nom), trial and competition dates for the RHAC Senior School representative sporting pathways (HZSA > AICES > CIS > NSW All Schools > SSA).

As this is a representative pathway, students who nominate to trial for these teams should have extensive playing experience and in the case of AICES and CIS trials, students be playing in a representative team outside of school at an association or state level. Some sports, such as cricket, require students to be involved in certain representative teams or academies in order for nominations to be accepted. If this is the case, further information will be emailed to students by the Head of Student Opportunities.

Please download the Senior School Representative Sports Calendar –Term 3, 2024 below.

Nomination Guidelines

Students MUST email all nominations (Noms) to the Head of Student Opportunities ( [email protected] ) AT LEAST 3 days before the nomination date. Late nominations will not be accepted. Students who do not nominate will be turned away from any trial they attend.

Nominations need to include the following information:

  • Name
  • Event
  • Date of birth
  • Year Group
  • Parents email
  • Playing positions (1st and 2nd preference)
  • Playing/representative experience

Once the nomination has been completed and accepted, further information about the trial will be sent to students and their nominated parent email address.

If you have any questions about representative sport or would like some more information about a team or trial, please see Mr. Adams at his office or email him. Additional information can also be found on each association’s website.

RHAC is one of 18 schools who are members of the Anglican Schools Corporation (ASC). The ASC provides advice and support in relation to areas such as financial management, HR, government regulation, child protection, Christian education and WHS.

Approximately once every five years, a team of experienced professionals, including teachers and accountants, spend three days at each ASC school to gain a strong understanding of the school and provide suggestions on how the school can further improve what they do and how they do it. A team will visit RHAC this September.

The team is keen to receive feedback from RHAC parents prior to their visit. The ASC has designed a survey that will be emailed to parents next week. It is important that we hear from as many families as possible. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate you taking the time to complete the anonymous survey. However, please remember that parents are encouraged to raise issues or concerns when they arise, rather than wait to be invited to complete a survey. There are charts in the Parent and Carer Handbook ('Who to contact' section) which show parents who they can write to at any time to share their perspective.

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Get Involved

To get involved in the P&F, contact us at the email below.

Warm regards,
Matt Perry
