I’m sure that many cricket fans will remember March 2018 when an Australian bowler tampered with the ball using a piece of sandpaper. Following the understandable public outcry, The Ethics Centre was invited to review the culture of Cricket Australia. They found 5 disturbing problems:
In this Issue
- Year 11-12 Legal Studies Q&A session with the Honourable Justice Judy Ryan
- Year 10 PDM students capture the magic of Vivid Sydney
- Senior School Concert Band & SWE receives highest accolade at ASBOF
- Double the determination, double the victories
- Shrek the Musical JR - Behind the scenes, Tickets & Sponsorships
From the Principal
A message from Principal Hartley
A message from Principal Hartley
- A lack of maturity of judgement
- Aggressive tactics
- Win at all costs
- Fear of speaking up
- Little understanding of consequences for inappropriate conduct and no fear of consequences
I understand that Cricket Australia subsequently owned these problems and took steps to address them. The Ethics Centre’s investigation and findings demonstrated the importance of values for any organisation. Whether it be a sporting body, a multinational company, a small business or a school, genuinely operating according to articulated values makes a real difference to the success of the organisation and its impact on the society in which it operates.
The Bible provides clear guidance on how RHAC can ensure we have a culture and values that positively influence what we do and how we do it:
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word that does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it – not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it – they will be blessed in what they do . ( James 1:22-25 )
Staff in leadership roles at RHAC invest a substantial amount of time working with the staff and students they lead to guide and direct them to speak, act and think in a way that is consistent with our College values – character, care and courage through Christ. Working with others to positively influence school culture of itself takes courage. I am thankful that our staff are committed to speaking to their colleagues or students to address issues that might challenge or contradict the College values or related ethical behaviours. It is important that our staff have the courage to speak to someone and point out that that what they said (or how they said it) what they did (or how they did it), was unhelpful or caused offence to someone else.
I sincerely thank our parents for working positively with us over the last two terms. We have received encouraging feedback and also heard from a few parents who have suggested ways in which we could serve our community better. The executive team regularly look to the quality of our work, acknowledge our shortcomings and try to take practical, positive steps to make the school better.
As we move into the three-week winter break, I trust that our families will enjoy a break from the school routines and find time to enjoy each other’s company. I have been working in schools for over 30 years and I think, for the first time, I am taking a few weeks off in the winter break. My wife and I are headed to South America, where I once lived. It promises to be a more adventurous holiday, including a trek and boat trip in the Amazon. Mrs Bromley will be the Acting Principal while I am away. Looking forward to seeing everyone again next term.
From the Scriptures
Will you accept Him as Lord and Saviour of our life?
Will you accept Him as Lord and Saviour of our life?
Exodus 3:13-14
13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”
God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
Today, we are looking at the last of the “I am” statements of Jesus in the Gospel of John, and is found in chapter 8 verse 58.
“Before Abraham was born, I am!”
John 8:31-38
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know that you are Abraham’s descendants. Yet you are looking for a way to kill me, because you have no room for my word. 38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father’s presence, and you are doing what you have heard from your father.”
Jesus comments raises the temperature of the discussion and in John 8:39-47, he goes on to demonstrate, that it is only with their lips they declare they are Abraham’s children, whereas their hearts tell of a different story. As you can imagine, this infuriates the Jews.
John 8:48-58
48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?”
49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honour my Father and you dishonour me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.”
52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
We can be left with no doubt that Jesus understood who he is and claims to be God. The Jews affirm this by their reaction. In their mind, Jesus just claimed equality with God which was blasphemy, punishable by death and so they picked up stones to execute him on the spot.
Jesus leaves us with no doubt about who he claims to be. LORD
The question we are left with, is will we accept him as Lord and Saviour of our life, keeping in mind, the resurrection changes everything?
My hope is that you may find time over this school holiday break, to rest and enjoy family time where possible.
God bless.

Year 11-12 Legal Studies Q&A session with the Honourable Justice Judy Ryan
Year 11-12 Legal Studies Q&A session with the Honourable Justice Judy Ryan
On the 24th June, Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies had the privilege to hear from the Honourable Justice Judy Ryan. Justice Ryan formerly worked as a judge for the Family Court of Australia (now known as the Federal Circuit and Family Court). Students listened to Justice Ryan discuss a number of issues including the recent merger of the Federal Magistrates Court and Family Court, as well as legislative updates coming into effect this year under the Family Law Act. Students had a question and answer session at the end, and enjoyed asking Justice Ryan about her personal experiences working as a Judge, and her thoughts on issues regarding further areas of law reform and funding for services such as legal aid. We are thankful that Justice Ryan took the time from her day to provide such an enriching experience for our students.
Year 10 PDM students capture the magic of Vivid Sydney
Year 10 PDM students capture the magic of Vivid Sydney
On June 12th, Year 10 PDM students ventured into the city to put their photography skills to practice to photograph the various light installations at Vivid Sydney. We took photos of the city while there was still light. As we were walking under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the sun set and we captured beautiful photos of Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. It felt like the whole city was dancing with light! We capped off the excursion with Maccas, while watching the various unique light installations, before walking back over the bridge to Milsons Point where we caught the train back home.
They say photos speak louder than words:
Student reflections
"Our journey started in the afternoon from Tallawong Metro to Wynyard station. We walked across Barangaroo, Walsh Bay and under the Sydney Harbour Bridge to take some photographs on the way to The Rocks. After spending about two hours at The Rocks, we decided to head back and walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge to take some arial photography of the Vivid Sydney light installations and of the Sydney Opera House, before catching the train back to Tallawong".
(Akshar K)
"I was a part of my school's photography excursion for an exciting day in the city. I took photos of parts of the city, finding beauty in old buildings. As the sun set, Vivid lit up Sydney with bright lights and cool art. I took pictures of the Sydney Opera House, Milsons Point and Sydney Harbour Bridge, capturing all the colourful displays. I tried different angles to show both the old parts and the bright lights of Vivid. It helped me get better at taking pictures and understand city life more". (Carter)
"We went to Barangaroo and took some beautiful street photography of grandeur (photo from low angle high viewpoint), urban decay (urban life demolished or about be demolished), loneliness (photo from large depth of field and low light), chaos (photo of chaotic language with slow shutter speed and/or layered images) and utopia (photo of perfect world with perfect, clean lines and framing). After that, we walked through small piers and bays to Walsh Bay, Dawes Point to take bunch of photographs showing examples of grandeur, urban decay, loneliness, chaos, and utopia. We captured amazing photographs from milling machines, to reflected waters of a ship bay, terrace houses and small cottages. Then we started to make our way to The Rocks to set our cameras, tripods and bags to the best viewpoint of Vivid. We took photos of Julia Gutman’s Lighting of the Sails: Echo of the Julia Gutman and the Sea, Sand and Stars at Museum of Contemporary Art, and of simple LED coloured lights near the buildings and stores at Circular Quay. (Dharsh)
"The class took the train from Tallawong Metro to Wynyard station, where we took out our cameras and started to take photographs while walking around Barangaroo. The class then walked to the Sydney Opera House. Along the way, we were given the opportunity to take photographs focusing on urban places, light, shadows and reflections as a part of our unit of work. We then set up tripods near the Circular Quay cruise terminal and bought dinner while waiting for the light show to begin. Once Vivid commenced, we took photographs of the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Customs House. We then decided to walk across the bridge and take photographs from a high vantage point. The class then boarded the train at Milson’s Point and arrived back at Tallawong Metro". (Andrew)
"June 2024 marked the 15th anniversary of Vivid, this year's theme being humanity. We started our trip from Tallawong Metro, and after getting off at Wynyard station, we started to take photographs of our surroundings using our cameras and tripods. We walked around taking photos that displayed grandeur, urban decay, loneliness, chaos, and utopia. As the sun set, we watched the drones being set up to get ready for an amazing light show. We then started to make our way to The Rocks for the most perfect view of the show and to grab dinner. We then walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge for a better vantage point of the show, where the photos were even better than before! The show projecting on the Harbour Bridge opened our eyes to a whole new perspective. The theme for this year's Vivid was spectacular - Julia Gutman's work was so breathtakingly beautiful, and so significantly deep and special (in my opinion) that all of us lost track of time and missed our first train to get back, but we managed to get on the second train back. A beautiful and unforgettable experience, thank you to Mrs Tweed and Mrs Muthukuda from the art department for this amazing adventure". (Yasiru)
Senior School Concert Band & SWE receives highest accolade at ASBOF
Senior School Concert Band & SWE receives highest accolade at ASBOF
Last Sunday, our Senior School bands participated in the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival (ASBOF) held at the University of NSW, Kensington. Concert Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble both played with pleasing musicality and delivered moving performances. Both bands were rewarded with Gold Awards for their outstanding performances.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to perform in the John Clancy Auditorium - a high-quality performance venue - to showcase the engaging pieces they have been working on with their conductors, and receive valuable feedback from an adjudicator on their progress this year. We are very proud of how our students performed and presented themselves on the day.
Thank you to the students for their diligent preparation in the lead-up to this event and for consistently making their early morning rehearsals a priority. Thank you also to the parents for coming out to cheer on the bands and for their ongoing encouragement and support.
(Thank you to the families who have submitted photos from the event).
Double the determination, double the victories
Double the determination, double the victories
Amelie P-S (Year 12) has been training hard and playing excellently in her AFL. This led to her selection in the u18 Coates Talent League team for GWS Giants and off the back of this, selection in the U18 Australian All Stars a couple of weeks ago.
Following her performance in these games, she has only this week been selected in the ‘Allies’ team to compete in the AFL National Championships.
"This is a great achievement given this team is a selection of the best players from NSW, QLD, NT, ACT and TAS", says proud dad Tristan.
Darcie P-S (Year 10) trialled at the CIS rugby 7’s competition with AICES, playing excellently and subsequently winning the tournament. She was then selected into the CIS team who will be competing in the NSW All Schools Championship.

Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival - Monday 29th July
Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival - Monday 29th July
The Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held next term, on Monday 29th July at Blacktown International Sports Park.
This week, students have begun signing up to the field events they wish to compete in (discus, shot put, high jump and long jump). High jump is the only event that we complete at school during Sport, as the event runs longer than other events on the day. Students may sign up to as many of these 4 events as they wish.
There are two options for students to choose from: the competition and the participation.
For the competitive session , there is a set time of 40 minutes for each field event. If students have already signed up, this allows teachers to get straight into the competition rather than spend 15 minutes writing down students’ names and competitor numbers. It also allows for serious competitors to finish and place, potentially making it through to the HZSA Carnival.
The participation session will have an allocated time at the field event of 1 hour and 20 minutes. There is no need to sign up to participate. Students are able to walk up to the event with their friends, have a throw or a jump and collect a House Point for their participation. The throws and jumps will not be measured, allowing more students to have a turn and experience the different field events at the carnival. It is similar to the ‘Lizard Lane’ that was trialled at the swimming carnival. It was a success because students who were not necessarily confident to compete in the races found enjoyment and fun in participating in the event with their friends.
Students do not need to sign up for track events on the day, as these run smoothly within the allocated time. Below is a copy of the program that will be used on the day, to show the approximate competition times and participation times.
If you are unsure which session your child should be in or if you have any questions or concerns, please send an email to [email protected]

Ensemble Fees
We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.
It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.
For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).
These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

College staffing changes
College staffing changes
We have a few staff who are finishing at RHAC at the end of the term, and some new people will join us early in Term 3.
Mrs Sarah Crawford , one of our Pre-K teachers, will be the new RHAC Registrar from the beginning of next term. Mrs Crawford is very excited to be taking up this role, and I have every confidence that she will manage enrolment applications skilfully and warmly welcome new families.
Thankfully, the College has recruited an experienced teacher to replace Mrs Crawford. Miss Anna Sanders is our new Pre-K teacher. Miss Sanders has been working with Mrs Crawford this week to help ensure a smooth transition for the class next term.
Our Early Stage 1 leader and Kindergarten teacher, Mrs Claire Sullivan , finishes at the end of this term. Mrs Sullivan is sad to be leaving and I am very thankful for the excellent contribution she has made to RHAC. One of our existing Junior School teachers, Ms Prishanta (Prish) Govender , has been appointed to be the new team leader of Early Stage 1. Prish is a committed teacher, has many years of experience and I am confident that she will be a wise and thoughtful leader. At the time of writing, the College was part way through the recruitment process to find a new Kindergarten teacher.
Sadly our Head of Visual Arts, Mrs Jackie Sposobin , has resigned due to ill health and will finish at the end of the term. I trust and pray that her health will improve, and that she will be well enough to contribute to the school in some capacity in the future. I thank Mrs Sposobin for her commitment to the College since 2017.
One of our current Visual Arts teachers, Mrs Sondrine Glendenning , has been appointed as the new Head of Department. Mrs Glendenning is a well-regarded teacher and I’m confident she will be a capable leader. The College has advertised for a new Visual Arts teacher.
The Head of HSIE, Mrs Rachel Taylor , will return from maternity leave at the beginning of next term. Mrs Susie Grice very ably filled in for Mrs Taylor over the last 9 months and I thank her for her work. Mr Robert Souksavath covered Mrs Taylor’s classroom teaching responsibilities in her absence, and I thank him very much for his work.
One of our part-time Junior School teachers, Mrs Natasha Walkerden , will start maternity leave in early Term 3. I am confident of being able to confirm her replacement when a decision is made on the new Kindergarten teacher.

RHAC P&F
RHAC P&F
The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.
This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.
This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.
Family Support Meals
From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.
You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
