Growing Through Rest and Learning

Growing Through Rest and Learning

I trust that parents and students had a restful and enjoyable winter break. While I appreciate that many parents continued to work as normal during the holidays, I trust that the break from regular school routines was helpful for your family and that you had some restful downtime together.

The American Psychological Society refers to seven different types of rest.

  • Physical rest
  • Emotional rest
  • Social rest
  • Sensory rest
  • Creative rest
  • Spiritual rest

Because life is full for many of us, finding time to rest in one or more of these domains can be challenging and we really shouldn’t wait until school holidays to find this rest.

As a principal, I interact with people for many hours every day to try and ensure that the school provides the best education we possibly can for our students. At the end of a long day, I find that social rest is important. One simple way that I achieve this is to go on a walk once or twice a week after work. I do not take any technology and walk for up to 30 minutes to a park close to my home. I breathe deeply and try and thank God for small blessings.

At the teacher professional learning day on Monday, I gave a devotion where I referred to the concept of rest in the Bible. Some parents may be aware that the creation story in the first few chapters of Genesis refers to God resting on the seventh day. God also invites us to enter his rest through the death and resurrection of his son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

When I addressed the teachers on Monday, I encouraged them to remember that every RHAC student is made in God’s image and therefore is of inestimable value to God. The depth of love God has for every student should compel our teachers to do all they reasonably can to love and care for every student as a unique individual.

When I spoke about caring for students, I emphasised academic care. While unemployment remains relatively low in Australia, it can be challenging for some young people to find rewarding, well paying jobs. Therefore, I am committed to working with RHAC staff to teach well and be concerned about each student’s academic progress because I want students to maximise their marks so they will have a range of options when they finish Year 12.

However, academic progress should not just be limited to results, which thankfully have been consistently improving each year at RHAC. Our teachers are committed to academic care which involves developing each student’s ability to:

  • Concentrate
  • Remember information
  • Think independently and analytically
  • Express themselves persuasively without using AI
  • Make well considered judgements
  • Be academically resilient and not give up when they don’t achieve a goal

Finally, on the topic of rest, the RHAC Council has generously given me study leave in Term 4 this year, returning in the last week of term. I will be visiting multiple schools in the United Kingdom, researching classroom teaching practice. This is the first time I have taken a significant amount of time off during a school term in over 30 years of teaching. Mrs Bromley will be Acting Principal while I am away.

Mr Brett Hartley, Principal

From the Scriptures

Choosing Stillness in a Busy Season

Choosing Stillness in a Busy Season

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

Ps 46:10

Welcome back to a new term! I do hope the school holidays were a time of refreshment and rest from the many routines a busy school environment necessitates.

This holiday break I have been reflecting on the words of Psalm 46. In verse 10 we read these words of God to His people:

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.” Ps 46:10

The idea of ‘being still’ is one that is really rather challenging in our every-busy lives, isn’t it? As we look towards the term ahead, we know that many exciting and busy times of learning lie ahead. Sport resumes, school drop offs and pick ups resume, homework resumes, our Year 12s will sit their Trials and graduate from school, our Junior School musical will be rehearsed and performed, different year groups will enjoy camps away together- and those are just a few of the events that await us in the next term. ‘Being still’ may be challenging in amongst that all!

So how, then, do we follow God’s direction in His word to ‘be still’ before Him?

There is a beautiful example of this in the New Testament where we read of the two sisters, Mary and Martha, who Jesus visited when He was in their town. We read in the gospel of Luke, chapter 10:

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. (Luke 10:38-40a)

An important visitor – the Lord Jesus- had arrived to stay and Martha was busy doing many things. These were probably good things, necessary things – and “being still” was simply not possible! But then there was Mary, just sitting at Jesus’s feet, listening to Him. Martha’s frustration bubbles over as she asks Jesus: “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” (Luke 10:40b)

In reply, Jesus gently says to Martha:” 4 1 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. [ f ] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42)

Overwhelmed by busyness, Martha was worried and upset about many things! But Mary, despite the countless tasks to do, chose to be still, to know that Jesus is the One she needed to learn from and she chose stillness before Him over her worries and upset.

As we begin a busy and exciting Term 3, may we be challenged to have Mary’s attitude over Martha’s. May our hearts and minds be willing to ‘be still’ before Him. May we read His word and learn from Him and may this be the ‘better thing’ we choose. May we come before Him, knowing He is God and we can trust Him and learn from Him. May we encourage the students and children in our lives to always choose to do this first too.

Mrs Karin Stace, Junior School Christian Education Leader

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Traffic Safety on Worcester Rd

Please remember that parents should not park on Worcester Rd, even if they are waiting in the car. Staff have observed that some parents park in a no stopping zone and wait in the car for their child in the afternoon. This is unsafe.

  • Junior School parents should pick their child up by entering through gate 5, as per our standard procedures.
  • Senior School parents can pick up their child by entering in gate 1.

How Parents can contact the School

Each week these charts will be accessible directly from the newsletter

Parents may need to contact a RHAC staff member for a range of reasons, including transport issues, student wellbeing and student learning needs. The charts below help parents to know who to contact if they have a concern. The parent manual, which is accessible from a link in this newsletter, provides parents with a substantial amount of information which may assist them. The manual provides guidance on how parents and care givers can make a complaint.

The College is keen to celebrate our students' achievements. Their parents are encouraged to share positive stories about their child by writing to [email protected]

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Changed traffic conditions - K Block Car Park Right of Way

Please note the changed traffic conditions in the K block car park. Traffic leaving the drop-off area now has the right of way. Traffic going to / from the hardcourts must now give way to any traffic exiting the drop-off area. Please follow the updated signage and painted lines as per normal road rules. We anticipate this change will help the traffic flow during peak times by giving priority to the higher volume roadways.

Please take extra care while drivers adapt to these changes.

Bird Flu

Bird Flu

During the holidays, Independent Schools NSW wrote to member schools to provide guidance on the recent outbreak of bird flu. They advised Bird flu infections in humans are rare and typically occur following close contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. However, for more abundant caution, I developed a response plan in the event of someone discovering a sick, injured or dead bird on the school site.

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Junior School Afternoon car pick up

Unfortunately, some parents have been driving up the driveway too early to pick up their children. This is particularly stressful for Pre-K parents who have to park and pick up their children at 3:00pm.

Please note the following times for car pick-up:

  • Pre-K parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and pick up their children from 2:50pm.
  • K-2 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:15pm.
  • K-6 parents can drive up the Gate 5 driveway and wait for directions from staff from 3:25pm.

Please do not drive up the driveway before your designated time as this holds up the traffic for other parents.

  • Pre-K parents from 2:50pm
  • K-2 parents from 3:15pm
  • K-6 parents from 3:25pm

Additional parking guidelines are provided in the Parent & Carers Handbook below.

Welcome Back from the P&F - A Busy and Exciting Term Ahead!

Welcome Back from the P&F - A Busy and Exciting Term Ahead!

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful and restful Winter break and had the opportunity to spend some quality time with family and friends.
What an incredible start to Term 3! It has been wonderful to see everyone with so much enthusiasm and energy. The Senior and Junior School Athletics Carnivals have certainly kicked the term off in spectacular fashion. I can't wait to hear which House will be crowned this year's champion!

There is so much to be excited about. The Junior School production of Finding Nemo, our Father's Day Stall, Father's Day Breakfast and, of course, our much-anticipated RHAC Spring Fair are all just around the corner. It is shaping up to be an action-packed term full of opportunities for our community to come together and celebrate all that makes Rouse Hill Anglican College such a special place.

While these events are always enjoyable for our families, they certainly don't happen by chance. They are the result of countless hours of planning, collaboration and hard work by many people behind the scenes. As P&F President, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge and sincerely thank those who continue to support our community so generously.

Firstly, a heartfelt thank you to Mr Hartley , Mrs Bromley and Dr Chalwell for your ongoing encouragement, guidance and unwavering support of the P&F and our initiatives.

A very special thank you also goes to Mrs Rachel Taylor , whose dedication is nothing short of remarkable. Whether it's responding to emails late into the evening or helping coordinate the countless moving parts that come with our events, Mrs Taylor’s willingness to go above and beyond never goes unnoticed. We are incredibly grateful for everything you do.

Thank you also to Scott Bond and the entire Properties Team , who are the quiet achievers behind every successful event. From setting up, moving equipment and ensuring everything runs safely and smoothly, your hard work is invaluable and deeply appreciated.

To my fellow P&F Executive members, Jenna H (Vice President), Danielle D (Secretary) and Himanshu G , thank you for the countless hours you are dedicating behind the scenes preparing for the Spring Fair. Your passion, commitment and willingness to continually step up make an enormous difference and I feel incredibly fortunate to work alongside such a dedicated team.

Finally, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our wonderful Spring Fair sponsors . Your generosity, community spirit and belief in our College help transform the Spring Fair from an idea into a truly memorable day for our students and families. Your support allows us to create an event that brings our community together while also helping the P&F continue to enhance opportunities for our students. We encourage all members of our College community to support the businesses that so generously support us.

With just a few weeks until the Spring Fair, the excitement is certainly building! We look forward to sharing more updates soon, and we can't wait to welcome everyone on Saturday, 12 September for what promises to be a fantastic day of fun, entertainment and community spirit.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the P&F. We look forward to seeing you throughout another exciting term.
Kind regards, Mrs Sneha Pandey President – RHAC P&F Association [email protected]
