A question that teachers often receive from parents at this time of term is ‘What should our kids be doing in the holidays?’, and more often than not, the response is related to revision, study or preparation. Whilst these are all very valuable recommendations (and I am a HUGE advocate for students to undertake plenty of quality wide reading in their holidays), I would like to suggest that this break is a great opportunity for our students to reflect on their ‘sleep hygiene’.
‘Sleep hygiene’ has become somewhat of a buzzword in recent times, however, it simply refers to the conditions that surround the preparation for sleep each evening. Research has consistently shown that good sleep hygiene is essential for adolescents in supporting strong executive functioning and promoting positive mental health.
