A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

I have been reading, with great interest, The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt. The central thesis of his excellent book is that the mental health of adolescents in many western countries deteriorated suddenly and rapidly between 10 and 15 years ago. Haidt contends that this has been caused by the decline of free play in childhood and the rise of smart phone use in teenagers.

Haidt shares the story of Alexis, an 11 year old girl who opened an Instagram account by stating that she was 13. Alexis downloaded the app, used it for a while and deleted it so that her parents would not see it. She learnt how to hide the app on her home screen rather than go to the trouble of deleting it. When her disapproving parents found out that she was using Instagram, Alexis made secondary accounts which allowed her to post without their knowledge.

Alexis initially boasted about having 127 followers; however, several months later she began to show signs of depression. Alexis drew a distressed self-portrait, labelling herself as “stupid, worthless, freak and retard”. Haidt goes on to say that, within 6 months of Alexis opening her account, the content Instagram’s algorithms chose for Alexis changed from her initial interest in fitness to a stream of photos of models, to dieting advice and then ultimately content promoting anorexia in a positive light. Alexis ended up needing professional treatment for eating disorders and depression for several years.

By the age of 21 thankfully Alexis had largely gained control of her life again. While it is true that there are many teenagers who do not experience significant harm using social media, it is also true that some do.

Haidt interviewed people about the impact of gaming on their lives. A young adult man, Chris, reflected on his teenage years that were largely spent playing online games:

I missed out on a lot of stuff in life – a lot of socialisation. I feel the effects now: meeting new people, talking to people. I feel that my interactions are not as smooth and fluid as I would want. My knowledge of the world is lacking. I didn’t spend time having conversations or learning about sport. I often feel like a hollow operating system.

Later in the book, Haidt wrote about the value of stillness. He said:

The phone-based life makes it difficult for people to be fully present with others when they are with others, and to sit silently with themselves when they are alone……… If we want to develop focus….We must reduce the flow of stimulation into our eyes and ears. We must find ample opportunities to sit quietly, whether that is in meditation, or by spending more time in nature, or just by looking at a car window and thinking on a long drive, rather than always listening to something or (for children in the back seat) watching videos the whole way.

While I’m sure that many parents would prefer their children to spend less time on devices, and particularly smart phones, I recognise that this is easier said than done. Reducing screen time, not allowing devices in bedrooms and other important strategies to reduce the risk of harm from excessive device use can result in children accusing you of being the strictest parents in Australia. Young people may claim that these restrictions will have an adverse impact on their social life, friendships etc. Despite the challenges, I encourage all parents have reasonable conversations with their teenagers about the dangers of excessive device use and why restrictions are necessary. Parents who set standards and expectations of device use, and stick to it, when their children are young are likely to have less arguments and difficulties with devices as their children grow up.

Please don’t infer that I am opposed to all forms of technology. However, I recognise the risks and limitations of smart phones and the adverse impact they can have on young people. The College continues to have a BYOD program in the Senior School where the device is a tool, not the tool, for learning.

On a different note, our major building project continues to progress well. I remain hopeful that we will be able to start using the building from the beginning of next year. It promises to be a great addition to the school. The ground floor will have a drama room, art rooms and technology rooms e.g. wood tech, food tech and IT. The ground floor will also house our new canteen. The first floor will be dedicated to Science and the top floor to Maths. These new facilities reflect the College’s commitment to STEM subjects and to the creative and performing arts.

From the Scriptures

What is it that you believe?

What is it that you believe?

This term in Chapel, we are looking at the “I am” statements in the Gospel of John. The statements so far are:

“I am the bread of life . Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

“I am the light of the world . Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

“I am the good shepherd . The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:110

“I am the resurrection and the life . The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. ” (John 11:25)

I remember many years ago, when I first became a parent, nobody gave me a manual on how to be a parent. How crazy is that? I mean, when I bought a car, I got a manual! When I bought an alarm clock, I got a manual! When I brought home a newborn baby – nothing; just lots of advice from people that was often contradictory. It was kind of scary!

So, how did I cope? Well, I ended up, in my head, putting together a list of principles that I thought were important and let life fill in the rest of the details. Here is that list:

  1. Take care of their basic needs. Feed and clothe them.
  2. Take care of their health.
  3. Take responsibility for them and protect them as best I can.
  4. Educate them so that they can make good choices in life.
  5. Instruct and guide them. Help them to grow in their faith and character.

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking about this list, when I started to think about the Chapel talk for the following week. To my surprise, I started to see a pattern in the ‘I am’ statements that I had not seen before. This is what I saw:

The first two ‘I am’ statements, Jesus addresses our spiritual needs. The next two ‘I am’ statements address what Jesus will do (or has done) for us. Today’s ‘I am’, he educates his disciples about their future (which encourages us to make some choices about our own life and what we believe) and next week’s ‘I am’ statement touches on how he helps us to grow in our faith and bear fruit.

Jesus’s next ‘I am” statement - “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Year 12 Physics Excursion to Kickstart at Sydney University

Year 12 Physics Excursion to Kickstart at Sydney University

Year 12 Physics students embarked on the long journey to Sydney University on Friday 7th June, exploring concepts of light, and from the universe to the atom. In this hands-on excursion, students used simulations and experimental procedures to calculate and investigate properties of light, quantum mechanics and quantum theory, as well as spectra of light to identify elements within galaxies.

Sydney University provided Year 12 with a unique experience with high tech equipment to explore more abstract concepts within the Physics course with the element of fun.

TASC Choral Festival 2024

TASC Choral Festival 2024

Last Thursday, our Junior School Cantabile and Senior Vocal Group participated in the annual TASC Choral Festival . This year’s festival took place at Thomas Hassall Anglican College and the students had the experience of joining together with students from other Anglican Schools Corporation schools for this exciting event.

On the day, the students learnt to sing an Australian choral work called ‘The Wanderer’ by Dan Walker as a combined item under the direction of guest conductor, Lucy Cantrill. The students also had the opportunity to soundcheck their own items and connect with singers from other schools.

In the afternoon, each choir presented their own items in a concert for each other as well as for the TASC principals and heads of school. Led by Mrs Fiona Morris, Cantabile sang a stunning arrangement of ‘Fix You’ by Coldplay. The students were pleased to receive positive feedback on their ability to sing four different parts, which is impressive for a group of their age.

They were followed by our Senior Vocal Group led by Mrs Ahn who sang ‘Middle of a Moment’ from the musical James and the Giant Peach . The audience, including Music staff from other TASC schools, were impressed by the balance and cohesiveness of the choir as well as their ability to sing such a challenging piece.

Both groups were accompanied by Mr Donovan Simmons on piano and we are very grateful to have him play with our choirs on the day. It made such a difference to both groups to be able to perform with live piano accompaniment.

Our Cantabile and Senior Vocal Group students are to be congratulated on their exemplary behaviour and for their outstanding performances. Thank you to Mrs Fiona Morris and Mrs Gloria Ahn for your dedication to seeing these two groups flourish and your passion for building a quality choral program at our College.

Junior School sports & results

Junior School sports & results

In this week's Junior School sports: Stage 3 Gold and Navy Netball, Gold and Navy Football; Stage 2 Gold and Navy Netball, Gold and Navy Football; Hills Zone interschool competition results, and CIS Cross Country Championships.

Stage 3 Gold Netball

The Gold netball team had a tremendous season, winning all games with one draw against the team they ultimately ended up playing in the finals. The girls played their hearts out in the final against William Clarke College, and are to be congratulated in their excellence and perseverance on the court without one of their main shooters. Their display of team work and the way they pushed through their tiredness is to be commended. Well done on finishing 2nd!

I would also like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Field who coached the team all season and did a fantastic job!

Stage 3 Navy Netball

The Navy netball team developed their skills throughout the season, working hard to find the right passes and leading to the ball. They worked well as a team on the court, showing great sportsmanship towards each other and the opposing teams. The girls went into the final against a very tough Norwest team, who were just too good on the day.

Well done on finishing 2nd girls!

Stage 3 Gold Football

The Gold football team enjoyed a remarkable season, earning a hotly contested spot in the Grand Final. Despite delivering one of their strongest performances, they narrowly fell short with a 2-1 defeat against William Clark College. Each member of the team displayed dedication and effort in every match they played and demonstrated exceptional teamwork and commitment during our weekly training sessions. Both teams showcased significant growth and improvement throughout the season.

Stage 3 Navy Football

RHAC navy team HZSA football semi finalists!!

An amazing display of camaraderie, true grit and determination all season. This wasn’t just a team of players, it was a team of mates. Regardless of the score line each game, they just kept going right up to every final whistle. They should all be super proud of themselves … their coach definitely is!!

While the Navy football team missed out on the finals in the B Division, they grew and developed as a team as the season went on. The boys not only worked well as a team on the field; showing great sportsmanship towards each other, but also as a team in our training sessions.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to Mr. Cowper for his invaluable coaching of the Navy team; our journey wouldn't have been possible without your guidance.

We extend our thanks to the families who stood on the sidelines, offering support, valuable advice and cheering them on!

Stage 2 Gold Netball

The Gold netball team went through the competition undefeated, unfortunately coming up against a strong William Clarke team in the final who brought their winning streak to end. The girls developed as a team and worked really hard each week on both offence and defence. They played a great season and should be really proud of their efforts each week.

Thank you to Mrs Clark who came each week and coached the girls.

Stage 2 Navy Netball

The Navy netball team had a great season in the Division A competition, considering they were bumped up form B Division. The girls went on to finish 3rd in the competition only losing three games the entire season (two to the other RHAC team). Congratulations girls on working hard and holding your own in the top competition. I am so proud of your determination each week and your commitment to the team.

Stage 2 Gold and Navy Football Team

In Stage 2, Hillzone Football, both our teams performed well over the past 2 terms, with our Blue team finishing Division 2 in 3rd place after Leading the competition until an exceptionally close loss in the last round. Our Gold team made it through to the final, and it was a nail-biting game; after an own goal in the first half, the Gold team went into the break, down 0-1.

They came out with an attacking mindset in the second half, and we had many shots on goal and were unlucky not to score until Xavier D.S scored the equalising goal with two minutes on the clock. We then played a very tense extra time, but the deadlock could not be broken, and we shared the premiership with Norwest Christian College. All the boys represented the College well, displaying great sportsmanship, skill and determination.

A special thank you to Mr De Sousa for giving up his time to coach the Gold Team.

Sem 2 sports trials

HZSA Afternoon Interschool Competition has wrapped up for Semester 1. Next week, we look forward to sharing how all teams finished.

The trials for the Semester 2 competition will begin during Stage Sport next week and run for following week as well. If more trials are needed, they will be held during lunch breaks in the final week of Term 2. The boys will be trialling for basketball, and girls will be trialling for football. There is no need to bring soccer boots in for these trials, we will save them for games only.

Walking bus program extended

Walking bus program extended

At the end of Term 1, students in Year 5 and 6 (and their siblings) were invited to participate in the trial. We have a small group of students who have joined. It is a delight to walk with these students, hear about their day and enjoy some exercise together. Two of the students are in Year 3 and, though younger, they are managing and enjoying the walk.

The ‘walking bus’ trial has now been extended to the end of Term 2, and Year 3 and 4 students will be invited to join us from the 27th of May. It provides the opportunity to spend time with a small group of students in a different setting, and teachers supervising the walking bus comment on the interesting and inclusive conversations they have with the students on the walk to Tallawong Station.

Our walking bus takes students from school at 3:20pm and arrives at Tallawong Metro Station at 3:40pm. Some students are picked up from the station and others catch the Metro to be picked up from a different location.

If you would like your Years 3-6 children to participate, please read the information below and complete the expression of interest form.

If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.

If you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]

Ensemble Fees

We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.

It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

Please see the ensemble timetable below for the rehearsal times, as well as information on each of the ensembles that are offered at the College.

Private Music Lessons

If you would like to sign up for private music lessons, please read the information on Private Music Tuition Brochure which includes the application form.

Also, if you have signed up for Instrumental Hire, you should have received your instrument on your first private lesson or at your first ensemble rehearsal. Again, if you have any questions or issues with this, please contact Mrs Neralie Want [email protected]

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles (with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir in the Junior School).

Thank you and I look forward to a wonderful year of music making with your children this year.

Junior & Senior School Music Ensemble Showcases - All welcome

Junior & Senior School Music Ensemble Showcases - All welcome

As you know, we are very excited about the two Ensemble Showcases that are coming up in Week 9. At the Showcases, there will be a fundraising event where we will be selling lolly bags to raise money for the students who are attending HICES Music Festival this year. This is a music event where selected musicians from HICES schools gather to rehearse and perform at the Sydney Townhall. As the participation fees for this is costly for families, we are going to raise money to support our SS Music students to see if we can subsidise some of the cost.

All lolly bags will be sold at $5.00 per bag so please bring along some money if you would like to help out. We will also accept some gold coin donations too at the entry if you would like to make donations then.

All of our music ensembles will be performing at this event. Please come and enjoy our musicians perform to provide you with a great night of entertainment.

  • SS Ensemble Showcase – Tuesday, 25th June at 7:00pm (Auditorium)
  • JS Ensemble Showcase – Wednesday, 26th June at 5:00pm (Auditorium)

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Get Involved

To get involved in the P&F, contact us at the email below.

Warm regards,
Matt Perry
