A significant number of parents, particularly new parents, have asked me about the extra-curricular (EC) opportunities RHAC provides and so I recently spoke with our Head of Student Opportunities, Mr Luke Adams, about his work as the coordinator of our Senior School EC programs.

A message from Principal Hartley
A message from Principal Hartley
Principal Hartley: Why do you think it is valuable and important for students to have opportunities to participate in sport and EC at school?
Mr Adams: I feel that our sport and EC program offers a great chance for students to meet like-minded people, whom they otherwise may not meet. I think our programs allow our students to engage in something they are passionate about or that gives them an outlet to express themselves. This is not only good for them, but also helps them to feel more connected to our RHAC community. I believe that when students feel connected, they are happier and potentially more academically successful.
Principal Hartley: What competition sports do Senior School students have the opportunity to try out for at RHAC?
Mr Adams: We participate in the HZSA weekly sports competitions. This has a semester 1 and semester 2 season which offer different sports (S1 Boys Basketball and Football, Girls Netball and Futsal. S2 Boys and Girls Touch Football, Boys Futsal, Girls Football and Boys and Girls Volleyball). Additionally, we have a pathway (HZSA, AICES, CIS) allowing students to nominate to trial for teams. This opportunity is for those students who are already quite strong in their chosen sport and would like the opportunity to play school sport at an elite level.
Principal Hartley: When does competition sport happen?
Mr Adams: We play in the HZSA competitions on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Games are played from 4:00-4:45/5:00pm or from 4:45-5:30pm. Most competitions run for about 10 weeks, plus 1-2 weeks of finals. We also have gala and championship days throughout the year. These events occur on a single day and include a range of sports that aren’t offered in the after school competitions such as Tennis, Oztag, Badminton and Table Tennis.
Principal Hartley: What are the extra curricular activities we are offering our Senior School students this year? When do our students participate in these activities?
Mr Adams: We have 25 extra curricular activities that run during our extra curricular time every second Friday. The activities include Drama, Robotics, Art, Social Sport, Technical Production, Writing Club and E-Sports. At other times we run Christian Groups and debating. Of course we cannot forget the many wonderful music ensembles coordinated by Mr Barnes, which meet before and after school.
Principal Hartley: How can students and parents find out more about our Senior School extra curricular and sport programs?
Mr Adams: We have a section on our website promoting EC. I regularly contact students via email about upcoming opportunities, as well as creating a semester calendar with all of the rep sport opportunities and nomination dates. Parents are welcome to write to me [email protected] if they have any questions about our EC and sport programs.

What can we learn from John 10?
What can we learn from John 10?
The Biblical image of a shepherd is very different to what comes in mind when I think about the sheep stations, I have either visited or seen on shows. The image that comes to mind is a mob of sheep, with horse and rider, dogs and even bikes. The Biblical picture is a flock of sheep where the Shepherd knows each and every one of his sheep. It is more than a job; he is their carer and protector and is fully responsible for them. In the Old Testament, Moses and King David were once shepherds in the field. King David calls God his shepherd in Psalm 23 and gives us insight into God’s character.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
The religious leaders of Israel were called to shepherd God’s people. But in Ezekiel 34 , God holds the shepherds of his people accountable for not doing their job and declares he will do the job of the shepherd.
Which brings us to today’s “I am” statements in John 10. “I am the gate” and “I am the good shepherd".
But before we look at this passage, Jesus will make one statement that may not make sense to us. In verse 7, when Jesus says “I am the gate”, we are not to think of our gates that we have around our house or even on our farms, rather we are meant to have the same picture of Jesus’ listeners of the day. What would have been understood by them, is that Jesus is claiming to be the shepherd, who, when out at night, has made a makeshift sheep pen (whether surrounded by rock or materials) and would lie down in front of the gap, becoming the barrier or the gate that kept the sheep in and the thieves and wild animals out. Anything wanting to get to the sheep would have to first go through him.
As you read through this passage, there are a few things worth noting. First, Jesus is the fulfilment of Ezekiel 34. Second, Jesus loves his sheep so much, he is willing to lay his life down for them. Third, note why in John 10:10.
Today’s passage is John 10:1-21

Year 12 Biology Excursion to University of Sydney
Year 12 Biology Excursion to University of Sydney
Year 12 Biology students went on an excursion to the University of Sydney to participate in their Kickstart Genetics program as part of their HSC studies. Students participated in two separate practical workshops run in the university science laboratories and they learnt various molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA extraction and gel electrophoresis, genotyping and diagnosis of genetic diseases, recombinant DNA technology as well as protein purification and analysis. It was an amazing and very educational experience for all students as they prepare for their HSC later this year and they all loved the hands-on nature of the workshops.
Years 7-10 competes in the Da Vinci Decathlon
Years 7-10 competes in the Da Vinci Decathlon
Recently, students in Years 7-10 competed in the Da Vinci Decathlon at Knox Grammar. This is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of high potential learners. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: Engineering, Code Breaking, Mathematics, Chess, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and Legacy.
Students attending shared their reflections:
"I learned to cooperate with unfamiliar faces and excel in working with others in managing the limited time that we were given". (Aryan N)
"I met and talked to all the year 7's in our team and got to know them a bit better as we bonded over the day because of similar interests. I really enjoyed the last activity of the day as it really required us to think as a team and work together". (Charlotte H)
"I learned a lot about teamwork this week, especially how important clear communication and collaboration are in achieving our goals. My strengths lie in organising tasks and problem-solving. I found the competition quite challenging, but I'm working on improving. Meeting new people was exciting, and what I enjoyed most was when the group brainstormed together".
(Myesha R)
"This year, it was a Year 9 and 10 mixed team with people having a wide range of skill sets. This helped us divide the various tasks according to everyone's skills. This gave me an understanding of how to work effectively in a team and helped us get the work done on time. Overall, it was a great learning experience". (Diya G)
"I think Da Vinci was great. I participated in Ideation and Maths, and I found problem-solving and creative thinking to be the most difficult. The Decathlon definitely has very hard and carefully thought out question papers and I learnt that communicating well as a team, dividing the work between students and managing time is very important". (Amanda S)
"I learnt about the importance of teamwork. When two or more minds approach the same question, you get different insight and you are more likely to come up with a more sophisticated solution. Everyone in the team had different skills and different ways to approach questions which made coming up with ideas easier. I enjoyed the whole day and I saw it less as a competition and more as a personal challenge. I loved the art and poetry as it is usually something that I enjoy". (Isabella A)
"At this event, I learnt about teamwork and how crucial it is to work together and share ideas and thoughts when we're feeling stuck. I have realised that my strengths are more straightforward or less literal questions, rather than imagination based questions. I loved meeting new people because without this opportunity I would have never met or talked to them, as they were in a different grade. I enjoyed the questions the most, and being able to think in a different way with people I hadn't met before". (Charlotte S)

Year 3 excursion to Sydney Zoo
Year 3 excursion to Sydney Zoo
On Wednesday 22nd May, as a part of our ‘Community and Remembrance’ unit in History, Year 3 visited Sydney Zoo. The excursion program ‘People, Places and Colonisation’ explored the deep attachment and bond of Aboriginal people to their Country, families, and peoples and the effects of colonisation. Through demonstrations, students gained an understanding of how plants and animals were sustainably used for food, fibre, tools, weapons, and medicines. They explored how Aboriginal art was used as a communication and recording tool. The students also had the opportunity to hear animal talks, observe animals in their habitats, and classify animals.
The students had a great day. Here are some of their reflections:
"I had a great day at Sydney Zoo. It was amazing. We got to learn about how the Aboriginals lived without shops! We looked at meerkats, they were so cute. I had the best day ever". (Mandy H)
"Today was a great day for a terrific zoo excursion. My class and especially me had lots of fun. I saw many reptiles, fish, and mammals. I can’t wait to tell my mum and dad all about it. My friends also loved the excursion". (Anaya)
"My highlight of the day was painting our faces with ochre- just like the indigenous Australians did and seeing all the animals". (Avhni)
"I loved looking at the meerkats. They were so fast and adorable.
Today we saw lots of animals. My top 3 favoutite animals were the dingoes, lions, capybaras and zebras. Dogs look just like dingoes but dingoes have bigger ears. The lions were nearly as big as the rhinos! The capybaras looked just like possums". (Abbey)
"My favourite part was when we saw the meerkats playing with each other. One of the meerkats was standing like it was the king of the world. Another was playing hide and seek with one of the babies". (Zuri)
"My favourite part was the reptile house". (Iniara)
"I had a great day at the zoo. We got to see all of the animals. My friends and I had a big chat about what was happening. We painted our face with ochre and it was cool. It was the best day of my life. I recommend going". (Scarlett)
"I loved the meerkats they are very cute. I love how they fight each other, they are really funny. Sometimes they even dig tunnels. I also liked the aquarium and looking at the underwater animals. The koala was very cute". (Elise)
"The zoo was fun. It had cool animals my favourite was the lion. They also told us about the aboriginals. You should go- it is worth a visit". (Aviijot)
"My favourite part was when we were listening to the indigenous Australians talk about how they used to live and survive. I loved the elephants". (Raghav)
"I had a terrific day at the zoo. We learnt that some boomerangs do not come back to you. We also learnt that female koalas have pouches and give birth to babies. My favourite animals were the penguins and the big croc" . (Prisha)
"Sydney Zoo is amazing - it is so intriguing.
The highlight of my day at the zoo was seeing the penguins, kangaroos and koalas. The nocturnal house and aquarium were so dark. We went to an aboriginal workshop and some of us got our face painted with ochre". (Eliza)

Walking bus program extended
Walking bus program extended
At the end of Term 1, students in Year 5 and 6 (and their siblings) were invited to participate in the trial. We have a small group of students who have joined. It is a delight to walk with these students, hear about their day and enjoy some exercise together. Two of the students are in Year 3 and, though younger, they are managing and enjoying the walk.
The ‘walking bus’ trial has now been extended to the end of Term 2, and Year 3 and 4 students will be invited to join us from the 27th of May. It provides the opportunity to spend time with a small group of students in a different setting, and teachers supervising the walking bus comment on the interesting and inclusive conversations they have with the students on the walk to Tallawong Station.
Our walking bus takes students from school at 3:20pm and arrives at Tallawong Metro Station at 3:40pm. Some students are picked up from the station and others catch the Metro to be picked up from a different location.
If you would like your Years 3-6 children to participate, please read the information below and complete the expression of interest form.

Ensemble Fees
We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.
It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.
For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).
These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

RHAC P&F
The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.
This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.
This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.
Family Support Meals
From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.
You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.
