The Power of Relationships in Learning
The Power of Relationships in Learning
At the heart of a flourishing classroom is something both simple and deeply powerful; the relationships between students, and between students and their teachers. Learning is not just about lessons taught and tasks completed; it grows through the interactions that take place each day as understanding is built together. When students know they are seen, known, and valued, they are more willing to contribute, take risks, and challenge themselves to go further.
Strong relationships create the conditions where meaningful learning can take place. In classrooms where there is trust and safety, students grow not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. They learn to listen, to express their ideas, to navigate challenges, and to care for others. These connections do not simply happen because students and teachers are in the same space, they are built over time through small, everyday moments of conversation, shared laughter, and genuine interest and care.
Over the past few weeks, I have had the privilege of teaching lessons in our Stage 2 and 3 classrooms. It has been a joy to spend time with students through history, English and PDH. Being present in these classrooms has allowed me to see the strong sense of connection that teachers have built, creating environments where students feel safe, confident, and ready to learn. It has also been a wonderful opportunity for me to get to know students more personally, and I look forward to spending time with our younger grades in the coming weeks.
We see this lived out across our Junior School in many ways. On National Walk to School Day, our Stage 3 students walked together to Tallawong Station. There was something special in the simplicity of that experience as students chatted as they walked, teachers joined in conversation, and friendships grew along the way. It was a beautiful picture of connection. Similarly, through Relay for Life fundraising, Compassion Day, and our upcoming Celebration of Culture Day, students have opportunities to work and learn alongside one another. Whether completing chores at home to support our Compassion children, raising funds for cancer research, or learning about different cultures, students are developing empathy, generosity, and a sense of shared purpose.
Often, it is the quieter moments that have the greatest impact. Teachers in the pick-up line asking about the best part of a student’s day, or what they are looking forward to on the weekend. Teachers gently guiding students through disagreements, helping them to listen, forgive, and restore friendships. Students supporting one another in the classroom and on the playground. These interactions shape the culture of our community.
As a Christian school, this focus on relationships reflects something even deeper. The Bible reminds us that God is relational. He knows us personally, cares for us deeply, and walks with us each day. In John 15, Jesus says, “I have called you friends.” This is a picture of connection that is close, personal and full of love. In the same way, when we build meaningful relationships with our students, we reflect the heart of God. We show them that they matter, that they belong, and that they are deeply valued. It is through these relationships that learning comes alive, and where each child is given the opportunity to grow, thrive, and feel truly known.
I am grateful for the partnership we share with families and encourage you to continue nurturing these relationships at home, as together we support all children to flourish. May we value every moment of connection and recognise the lasting impact they have on every student in our care.

Learning with Purpose
Learning with Purpose
As we move into an important assessment period, our focus at RHAC remains firmly centred on helping every student learn deeply, grow confidently, and recognise that success is built through consistent effort, clear instruction, thoughtful reflection, and the faithful use of the gifts God has entrusted to them.
One of the most powerful approaches we use in classrooms at RHAC is explicit instruction. Explicit instruction involves teachers clearly explaining concepts, modelling thinking processes, breaking learning into manageable steps, and providing guided opportunities for students to practise new skills. This approach helps remove uncertainty from learning and gives students a strong foundation from which they can build understanding and independence.
Equally important are our ‘checking for understanding’ strategies. Throughout lessons, teachers regularly pause to gauge student understanding through questioning, discussion, written responses, peer explanation, written reflection, and formative feedback. These moments are not simply about finding ‘right answers’; they help teachers identify misconceptions, adjust instruction, and ensure students remain actively engaged in their learning journey.
These practices are not only valuable in the classroom, they can be powerfully supported at home. As parents and carers, small intentional conversations can make a significant difference. Rather than asking, ‘Did you finish your homework?’ , you might consider asking:
- What did you learn today that stretched your thinking?
- Can you explain this concept to me in your own words?
- What feedback have you received recently, and how might it help you grow?
- What is one achievable goal you have for your next assessment task?
Encouraging students to articulate their thinking strengthens understanding, develops confidence, and reinforces an important message: learning is not simply about completion, it is about growth.
With assessments approaching, many students may experience a mixture of motivation, pressure, excitement, and uncertainty. During this time, our role as a school community is to encourage students to strive for their personal best while maintaining perspective, balance, and wellbeing.
Parents can support students by helping them establish manageable routines, prioritise sleep and healthy habits, create structured study plans, and celebrate progress, not only outcomes. A quiet workspace, regular check-ins, and encouragement to begin tasks early can have a meaningful impact.
Importantly, we encourage students to see feedback as a gift for growth. Feedback is an opportunity to learn, refine, improve, and take the next step forward. Some of the most significant learning happens when students engage thoughtfully with advice, persevere through challenge, and recognise that improvement is part of the learning process.
In this season of learning, we are reminded of the words from Colossians 3:23: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. This verse gently reminds us that our efforts matter, because diligence, perseverance, and integrity are valuable expressions of the character we seek to nurture in our young people. At RHAC, we hope our students are encouraged to approach their studies, using the perfect model of Jesus; with courage and humility.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge the many ways our students continue to embody service beyond the classroom. Through initiatives such as Relay for Life and Raise the Roof, students have demonstrated compassion, generosity, and a genuine commitment to community outreach. These fundraising and service endeavours remind us that education is not only about academic achievement, but also about developing young people who seek to serve others and positively influence the world around them.
I thank our students, staff, families, and wider community for their ongoing support of these meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and live out our shared values in action.

From the Scriptures
A Father We Can Trust
A Father We Can Trust
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Matthew 7:7 (NIV)
There is something deeply comforting about knowing we can come to God at any time. In Matthew 7:7–11, Jesus gives us a remarkable invitation: ask, seek, and knock. These are not the words of a distant God who is uninterested in our lives. They are the words of a loving Father who welcomes His children.
Jesus goes on to say:
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” — Matthew 7:9–11 (NIV)
As parents and carers, we understand the desire to provide for our children, protect them, and care for their needs. Jesus uses this picture to help us understand the heart of God. Our heavenly Father is perfectly good, perfectly wise, and perfectly loving.
At times, life can feel overwhelming. Families carry many pressures — work, finances, health concerns, friendships, school challenges, and uncertainty about the future. Yet Jesus reminds us that we are not alone. The God who created the universe and holds all things together also sees the individual needs of each person.
This is one of the beautiful truths of the Christian faith: the God who rules over galaxies also notices the worries of a child, the prayers of a parent, and the quiet struggles hidden in the heart. Nothing is too big for Him, and nothing is too small.
God does not ask us to pretend we are strong. He invites us to come to Him with trust. Through Jesus Christ, we are welcomed into God’s family and invited to know Him not only as Creator and King, but also as Father.
As a school community, may we continue to encourage our children to turn to God in prayer, to trust His goodness, and to rest in His care. In a changing world, we can have confidence that our heavenly Father remains faithful.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
thank You that You are good and that You love to give good gifts to Your children. Help us to trust You more each day. In the busyness and pressures of life, remind us that You are near, You hear our prayers, and You care for every detail of our lives. Strengthen our families with Your peace and guide our school community to rest in Your faithful love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

HZSA Secondary Cross Country
After a wet and unpredictable start to the week, our students were rewarded with near‑perfect running conditions for the HZSA Secondary Cross Country held last Thursday. A dedicated team of 61 Senior School students travelled to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, ready to test themselves against strong competition from across the Hills Zone.
From the first event to the last, our runners showed determination, resilience, and genuine support for one another. Their collective effort saw our College finish 5th overall out of 14 schools, a great achievement in a highly competitive field.
We are proud to acknowledge the following individual podium results:
🥈 Abbey Lincoln – 2nd, Girls 13 Years (3000m)
🥉 Blake Read – 3rd, Boys 13 Years (3000m)
🥇 Jalen Karbon – 1st, Boys 13 Years (3000m)
🥇 Savannah Prime – 1st, Girls 14 Years (4000m)
🥇 Holly Wilson – 1st, Girls 15 Years (4000m)
In addition, several students have qualified for the AICES Cross Country Championships next week. We congratulate:
Logan Farmilo, Savannah Prime, Holly Wilson, Jalen Karbon, Blake Read, Cassie Ye, Hanna Lewis, Oliver Sathiavan, Abbey Lincoln, and Riley Welch
We commend all students for their commitment, sportsmanship, and the way they represented our College with pride.

HZSA Semester One Finals
Our Junior Girls GOLD Futsal team capped off a strong season by competing in the HZSA Division A Grand Final on Tuesday afternoon. After finishing the regular season in 2nd place with a balanced record of four wins and four losses, the team entered the final determined and focused.
In a fast‑paced and physical match, the girls showed grit and teamwork, fighting for every possession and staying competitive right until the final whistle. Although the result didn’t fall their way on the day, their effort, attitude, and unity were outstanding.
The team finishes the season as HZSA Division A Runners Up, a result they should be incredibly proud of. Their growth across the season and the way they represented our College is worth celebrating.
Next Monday, we have two teams stepping onto the court for their respective HZSA finals:
Intermediate Girls GOLD Netball team
Senior Girls Netball team
We wish both teams all the very best as they compete for their titles. Their hard work throughout the season has earned them this opportunity, and we look forward to cheering them on.

National Walk to School Day – Stage 3 Mini-Excursion
National Walk to School Day – Stage 3 Mini-Excursion
This year, Stage 3 participated in Walk to School Day, an annual Australian event that encourages primary school students to build safe and regular walking habits. We took part on Friday, 22 May 2026, but instead of walking straight to school, we caught the Metro to Tallawong Station and then walked back to school together.
"When we arrived, the weather was a little drizzly, with light rain falling as we started our walk. Even though it was a bit wet, it didn’t stop us from having fun. We stayed together as a group and followed the path carefully. I felt proud because I already knew the route back to school, which made me feel more confident.
Along the way, we talked with our friends and enjoyed the fresh air, even with the rain. Knowing where we were going and being able to walk safely with more responsibility made me feel more independent than before. It was a great experience and helped me realise that I can be trusted to make good choices when travelling."
By Mahin Amin 6F5
On Friday, all of Years 5 and 6 walked about 1.5 kilometres to Tallawong Metro Station. Along the way, we stayed together and enjoyed talking with our friends. When we arrived, we signed out and then said goodbye to some friends before catching the Metro.
"I travelled with a group of my friends, which made the journey really enjoyable. It was great riding on the Metro because we didn’t have to sit in traffic like we usually would in a car or bus. The trip felt quick and easy, and it made me realise how convenient public transport can be.
Getting on and off the Metro and travelling with my friends made me feel more independent and responsible. We got off at Rouse Hill Town Centre, and I felt proud that I could manage the trip.
Overall, my experience was really fun, and I hope we can do it again next year!"

National Walk Safely to School Day – Year 5 Excursion
National Walk Safely to School Day – Year 5 Excursion
On Thursday 22 May, our Year 5 students proudly took part in National Walk Safely to School Day with a walk to Tallawong Station and back, enjoying an afternoon filled with fresh air, fun, and community spirit.
Students enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to be active outdoors while spending quality time with their classmates and teachers. The walk provided a wonderful chance to encourage healthy lifestyles and promote the importance of safe and active travel within our community.
Throughout the afternoon, students were all smiles as they walked together, sharing plenty of laughter and conversation along the way. The positive energy and excitement were evident, with the photos capturing the joy and connection experienced by everyone involved.
The event also highlighted the benefits of using public transport and active travel as practical alternatives for getting to and from school. Encouraging students and families to walk or utilise public transport where possible helps support healthier habits while also easing traffic congestion around the College.
It was fantastic to see our Year 5 students representing the College so positively and embracing the values of teamwork, wellbeing, and community connection.
An afternoon full of happy faces, school spirit, and memorable moments!
