Student Leadership at RHAC

In the past week, we have had the pleasure of spending time with students as part of the Relay for Life auction . In the Junior School, high tea was enjoyed with two students and in the Senior School, it was a wonderful lunch with four Year 12 students. Of these six students, two are College prefects and the other four have no formal leadership title. As we talked and ate, the topics ranged from holidays, families and books at the high tea, and politics, university, Netflix and burger preferences with the Year 12 students. The students were engaging, interested and interesting, and confident in expressing their thoughts about the world around them. It was a great example of how the work that we do from Kindergarten through to Year 12 gives all students the opportunity to develop leadership skills and attributes, whether officially recognised or otherwise.

Throughout the school day and over the yearly calendar, there are many opportunities for students to develop their leadership and confidence. This takes place in assemblies and classrooms as we talk about our school values of character, care and courage, and as students lead. Students are given opportunities in safe learning environments to develop their public speaking and leadership skills. In camping experiences, sporting opportunities, and groups like the Student Representative Council (SRC), students are developing the leadership qualities that set Rouse Hill Anglican College students apart.

This also happens in the incidental moments such as the Junior School ‘walking bus’ program. The ‘walking bus’ trial has been extended to the end of Term 2, and Year 3 and 4 students will be invited to join us from the 27th of May. It provides the opportunity to spend time with a small group of students in a different setting, and teachers supervising the walking bus comment on the interesting and inclusive conversations they have with the students on the walk to Tallawong Station.

The College’s Teaching and Learning Principles also support the academic and social development of students. Our emphasis on explicit instruction goes beyond explicitly teaching content in classrooms. We also provide explicit instruction on routines and behavioural expectations to help students develop their character, care and courage through Christ. In classrooms, students are encouraged to listen and courageously act upon feedback to develop their skills and understanding. Our high expectations of students and the relationships we foster with students all help to support their growth.

The Bible calls on us to use our gifts to serve others - Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms (Peter 4:10) - which is why from Kindergarten through to Year 12, we provide opportunities for students to stretch beyond themselves.

From the Scriptures

Whoever follows Jesus will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life

Whoever follows Jesus will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life

In Chapel this term, we have been looking at the Gospel of John and some of what I call ‘the outrageous claims of Jesus’. We started off by stating “the resurrection of Jesus changes everything”. The following weeks, we looked at these claims:

“Jesus has come so that you may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10b) and Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

What fascinates me the most about these claims is that each claim Jesus makes is like a puzzle piece, which when pieced together gives us a greater understanding and picture of who Jesus is. This week’s outrageous claim by Jesus is from John 8:12.

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Prior to COVID, one of the destinations we had for the Service trips was to Hong Kong, where we worked with an organisation called Crossroads. Apart from going there to help serve in the charitable organisation, Crossroads ran ‘Experiences’ to help people connect with the reasons why we need to service others in this world. One of those experiences was the ‘blind experience’. In this experience, each person was given a rod of bamboo and our guide was a person who had been blind for the majority of their life, if not all of their life. We were then led into a small dim room and explained what the rules about our experience and then we entered a large space and the door was shut behind us and there was no light only absolute darkness. For the next 40 minutes, we listened to our guide and the sounds surrounding us and then we journeyed through an African village, crossed over a bridge, went shopping at the market trying to buy goods we needed. At the end of the 40 minutes, we had to find seats and we debriefed for the next 5 minutes before letting the dim light in from the room we first entered.

As I read Jesus’ claim, I start to wonder, what else does He have to say about being the Light of the world; it makes no sense that He would make such an outrageous claim on its own. So let me invite you to read John chapter 9 – here is the link here .

As you read through this passage, there are a few things worth noticing;

It is the Sabbath and the religious leaders had a lot of man-made rules around the Sabbath. Making mud meant you had to move the dirt around with water. When you farm you move dirt when you plough, this is work! Therefore, making is just like ploughing and considered as work.

If a man is born blind and is begging, most likely he would not be a well-educated man especially in religious matters. Note, his progression of understanding about Jesus and the things of God. Now contrast this with the well-educated Pharisees. How did their understanding of Jesus and things of God progress?

At the end of this chapter, we are left with rather an awkward question – Am I spiritually blind to Jesus as well or do I believe?

Blessings.

Year 7 students' zoo-tastic excursion

Year 7 students' zoo-tastic excursion

Year 7 Science went on an excursion to Taronga Zoo on Friday of Week 3. Students had the opportunity to attend a workshop in one of the zoo's habitat classrooms where they learnt about how zoo enclosures are designed to cater for the needs of each specific animal to replicate their natural habitats, while making it safe for visitors to view the animals and the keepers who care for the animals. After the workshop, students were able to wander around the zoo looking at the various animals and exhibits. We had fabulous weather and everyone enjoyed the day.

Compassion Day & mufti fundraiser

On Thursday this week, Junior School students (Pre-K to Year 6) participated in Compassion Day. Students were invited to wear mufti clothes and to bring in a $2.00 donation to support our two sponsor children, Solomon and Virginia.

Students learnt about Kenya, where Solomon and Virginia live, as well as deepened their understanding of how we can support those who live in very different circumstances to our own.

Library News

Library News

This year, students in Pre-K to Year 6 participated in the National Simultaneous Story Time (NSS) book reading. This is a special event that happens nationwide, where schools all read the same book to their students. This year the book selected by the organisers Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), was "Bowerbird Blues" written and illustrated by Aura Parker. The book has also been selected as one of the six finalists in the Picture Book of the Year awards by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA).

Students were treated to a special reading of the book by Principal Hartley and Head of Junior School Dr Chalwell.

Watch our video reel here

CBCA Book of the Year Awards – Student Response at Home Project

As part of our Shadow Judging program, students are encouraged to design and make a creative response (at home, either during the term or in the holiday break) to their favourite finalist book. We would love to submit photos of the student work to the official website as part of our vote for the winning book in the Picture Book Category, and the Younger Reader’s Novel category. They will also be highlighted in the library during Book Week.

Students are studying these books as part of the library lesson program this term.

The responses are to be delivered to H Block Library, to Mrs Yeaman by the end of Week 1, Term 3.

Please note: This is not a compulsory activity.

Responses should be either be:

  • a 3D diorama depicting the story or a character, or favourite scene in the book, or
  • a Bento box - this is a presentation style inspired by Japanese food boxes, where an image of the book cover features as the centre of the Bento box and is surrounded by objects that represent elements of the book.

As the College endeavours to be environmentally friendly, we would encourage the use of recycled, reused, upcycled materials where possible.

Walking bus program extended

Walking bus program extended

At the end of Term 1, students in Year 5 and 6 (and their siblings) were invited to participate in the trial. We have a small group of students who have joined. It is a delight to walk with these students, hear about their day and enjoy some exercise together. Two of the students are in Year 3 and, though younger, they are managing and enjoying the walk.

The ‘walking bus’ trial has now been extended to the end of Term 2, and Year 3 and 4 students will be invited to join us from the 27th of May. It provides the opportunity to spend time with a small group of students in a different setting, and teachers supervising the walking bus comment on the interesting and inclusive conversations they have with the students on the walk to Tallawong Station.

Our walking bus takes students from school at 3:20pm and arrives at Tallawong Metro Station at 3:40pm. Some students are picked up from the station and others catch the Metro to be picked up from a different location.

If you would like your Years 3-6 children to participate, please read the information below and complete the expression of interest form.

Ensemble Fees

We will be running over 20 ensembles at the College again this year. To cover some of the cost of hiring external conductors, accompanists, new music, performance events and other related costs, students will be subject to ensemble fees. The fees will be added to the school account and will be charged twice per year. This will occur at the end of Term 1 and end of Term 2.

It is important to note that the fee structure is set at $75.00 per student per semester, equating to $37.50 per term. This fixed rate remains consistent irrespective of the number of ensembles a student chooses to participate in. Our intention behind this approach is to encourage students to engage in multiple ensembles.

For families that have more than one child participating in ensembles, the sibling discount will apply for second child and any subsequent children, at a rate of $50.00 per child, per semester ($25.00 per term).

These charges apply to all students participating in instrumental and vocal ensembles, with the exception of the Stage 1 Choir.

Year 7-8 Raise the Roof Disco fundraiser - Don't miss out!

Students in Year 7 and 8 are getting ready to bust out their best dance moves and raise the roof!

The annual Raise the Roof Disco is being held on Friday, 31st May in the Auditorium. Starting at 6:00pm, students are encouraged to come dressed in their best ‘glow in the dark’ outfits and win a few prizes for their best dance moves! With a few competitions, lolly bags, and even a popcorn machine, we’re hoping to raise enough funds to help support the Tabitha foundation.

The organisation is committed to improving the lives of families by providing them with safe and secure housing. Every year, countless families are left homeless due to poverty and natural disasters. Through Tabitha, we can directly contribute to building homes and rebuilding lives.

By dancing, donating, and spreading awareness, we can help provide shelter and hope to families in Cambodia!

We hope to see you all there!

Hills Relay for Life wrap-up

Hills Relay for Life wrap-up

It’s a wrap!

Hills Relay for Life weekends can be a little wet and cold, but the community of our team brings warmth to the soul. Over the weekend of 18-19th May, the RHAC Community Team took to the Castle Hill Showground to hope, celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer. I hope you will take a moment to see the fun we had and the memories we made below.

Watch our highlights reel

After the survivors and carers lap at 10:00am, the RHAC Drumline took to the track to lead Relayers enthusiastically on the first lap of the weekend. Over a period of 24 hours, we sold hot noodles, gave away prizes, participated in a Box Car Rally and Best Hat competition, dressed up as unicorns, dinosaurs, Bananas in Pyjamas, danced along to our silent disco DJs and even enjoyed a few ‘zzzz’s from time to time. While it was cold on Sunday morning, the sun shone brightly to make the last official lap of the day a little less of a trudge before calling it a wrap. It was also great to see our alumni in the form of Team Rumble back for more again this year.

I have offered words of thanks earlier; however, I would like to take this opportunity for a couple of special mentions. I extend my sincere gratitude to the Forward and Peenz families , whose support and enthusiasm never fails and made our 2024 adventure an event to be remembered, and to and our new friends at Coca-Cola Europacific Enterprises for their generosity and for trying (but failing!) to inspire us to run at 7:00am on Sunday.

Thank you to our very own Mr John Binney who especially drove down from the Blue Mountains to collect our gear and return it the College. Thank you to the families who supported us by fuelling us with pizza, pastries and egg and bacon rolls; to the students who ran, walked, trudged, managed our stalls, dressed up, danced, slept, helped set up and pack down all with abundant smiles.

We had 34 team members tracking their laps to bring the Team in 2nd place on the leaderboard with a total of 2,948 laps. That’s 1,114.322m in 24 hours, second to Glenwood High School’s 78 competitor total of 2,282,364m.

The Hills Relay for Life is a community event, and in 2024 this was as evident as ever. As I step down from the role of Team Captain, I pray that our community will remember, share the memories, and keep up the incredible work towards making this a cancer-free world.

  • Fundraising Target: $16,000
  • Total Funds Raised: $16,004.55 (including fundraising efforts)
  • Highest RHAC Team Fundraiser: Caitlyn D (Kindergarten) - $1,716
  • RHAC Team Most Laps of the Relay: K errie Bainy – 110

RHAC P&F

RHAC P&F

The P&F exists to foster community, connection and contribution amongst College families, and the broader College community. We exist to generate a sense of community involvement amongst the College and to contribute back to the College through social activities, community events and fundraisers.

This is a big year for the P&F with our biennial Spring Fair. As the saying goes: many hands make light work. If you’ve been considering how you can get involved, this is your opportunity. All parents/carers are welcome to attend, regardless of your involvement in the committee.

This year, we're excited to announce the Spring Fair, a major fundraising event in the 2024 calendar. We welcome your support in planning and participating throughout the year as many hands make light work. Businesses interested in sponsorship or supplying goods or services are encouraged to reach out.

Family Support Meals

From time to time, fellow families at the College are hit by unforeseen stresses (physical, emotional, financial, etc.). The RHAC P&F, through your support, facilitates a way for those families to access quality meals in their time of need to simply ease a bit of the pain during difficult times.

You can help by donating a store-bought meal, or by donating as little as $10 by clicking the link below which would be greatly appreciated. If you can provide a store-bought meal for the freezer, slices / banana breads / muffins (lunch box fillers) and desserts are also most welcome and may be dropped off with Mrs Sharon D’Agostino at the College main reception.

Get Involved

To get involved in the P&F, contact us at the email below.

Warm regards,
Matt Perry
