Looking ahead to Term 2

Looking ahead to Term 2

  • Term 1 recap
  • School holidays
  • Easter reflection
  • Parent-Teacher Interview reminder

Term 1 has flown by in a whirlwind of lessons, excursions, incursions, performance evenings, sports carnivals and myriad other activities! It has been a positive and enthusiastic start to the year, culminating for many in the 7-10 camps that were held over three days last week.

School holidays are almost upon us and the opportunity for our students to relax, unwind and have some leisure time is here. As a parent, we often hear phrases such as ‘I’m bored’ or ‘there’s nothing to do’... yet in this age, rather than this being problematic, we recognise that boredom is an essential experience which can be character forming and promote creativity and reflective thinking.

When the term has been one of growth and constant activity, we can also often fear that stopping for a break will halt our progress or somehow demotivate us. A simple (and gentle) solution is to consider the following ideas as to how students can  keep the momentum going for their academic and character development:

  • Read. Less screen time and more books have many long-lasting benefits.
  • Serve others . Engaging in local community activities, helping out at home or at church, joining an environmental group… all of these types of activities have been proven to boost well being as well as benefiting others. Many of our students will be serving the community through their participation in local ANZAC Day services in both Castle Hill and Riverstone.
  • Prepare for Term 2 . A few days before school commences (or on the first two days of term which are student-free), it is a good idea to organise your resources and ensure any holiday homework is up to date. Feeling prepared and having a plan helps set a positive tone for the term ahead! Our Year 12 students will know this to be the case.

In Term 2 we will begin to occupy our new Senior School building and enjoy the learning facilities it will offer. I look forward to sharing photographs and more information with you as the next term unfolds.

Please note our updated our uniform policy which can be found in the Parent and Carer Handbook . Of particular importance is the section on the wearing of jewellery and in particular, religious jewellery. This section includes what to do to receive an exemption or variation in relation to RHAC’s stated uniform requirements.

At our Easter Chapel service we reflected on the gift of the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Our salvation is through Him alone and we give glory to Him for all that we have done this term and for the gifts we have received. Many local churches are advertising times for their Easter services on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, if you would like to hear more.

Finally, I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to our staff at the College. Our teachers and our support staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that the term has been well organised and that students have been learning effectively.

We look forward to seeing you at the Parent Teacher Interviews in Week 1.

First term of 2025

First term of 2025

  • Winter uniform changeover
  • Parent-Teacher Interview reminder
  • Term 2 commencement dates

I am always amazed how quickly a term passes and believe this is because we pack so much into each school day. In addition to the regular learning that takes place every day in every classroom, in the past 10 weeks:

  • We have welcomed our PreK and Kindergarten students and seen them grow in confidence and skills.
  • Students participated in the annual Junior School Swimming Carnival, school sport, HillsZone competitions, Kindergarten to Year 2 gymnastics, Year 3 swimming lessons, and the K-2 Fun Run.
  • Students and teachers danced at the disco, and some have started rehearsing for the Wakakirri dance performance.
  • Music lessons began, and choirs and bands performed at the Celebration Assembly and Easter Chapel.
  • Students shared their learning in assemblies and led singing and prayers in chapel.
  • Extracurricular activities become part of our timetable and students enthusiastically participated in a wide range of activities.
  • Year 3 and Year 5 students participated in NAPLAN testing.
  • Year 6 enjoyed a wonderful three days in Canberra where they impressively represented our College as they learned about democracy and how the Australian government operates.

I am so thankful for each of the teachers in the Junior School. They work diligently and passionately to ensure that their students are learning in engaging, safe and caring environments. The teachers closely collaborate to ensure that their students receive the best teaching and learning. Over the term they participate in professional learning to further develop their teaching practice.

Now we look toward the 2-week break knowing that it is an excellent time for everyone to recharge for Term 2. The break gives us all the chance to enjoy time with our family and friends without the daily routine of school. While an occasional movie can be a welcome distraction, it is good for children to find ways other than technology to amuse themselves. I believe it is important that during these break children have time to read books, play in the backyard or playground, ride their bikes, play boardgames and pursue other interests.

We hope that students will return to school in Term 2, ready for another busy time of learning and play. We look forward to seeing parents at the Parent-Teacher Interviews on Tuesday 29th April (and PreK parents in the 2-day program on the 2nd May). We look forward to welcoming our students back on the 30th April. Please note the following information about school uniforms as we move into the winter term:

  • We changeover from the summer uniform in Term 2. Parents can opt to send their children in the summer or winter uniform until the end of week 2. However, they cannot send children in a combination of winter and summer uniform items. From the beginning of week 3, all students must be in their winter uniform.
  • The College has updated their uniform policy, and it can be found in the Parent and Carer Handbook (which can also be accessed from the College mobile app ). Of particular importance is the section on the wearing of jewellery and in particular, religious jewellery. This section includes what to do to receive an exemption or variation in relation to RHAC’s stated uniform requirements. When students come to school wearing jewellery or with haircuts that breach the rules, we will note this in the diary and ask that students and their families make the necessary changes to ensure they adhere to the rules.

May you know God’s blessing over this Easter break. May this be a time when you have time to reflect on the glorious, amazing love of God who sent his son, Jesus, into the world to give us life eternal.

From the Scriptures

Trust in His mercy

Trust in His mercy

Luke 23:32-42

In this poignant scene at Golgotha, we witness Jesus crucified between two criminals, each representing a different response to His presence. As the crowds jeer and the soldiers mock, the reactions of these two men reveal profound truths about grace, repentance, and the nature of faith.

The first criminal derides Jesus, saying, “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” (Luke 23:39). His response is one of bitterness and disbelief. He sees Jesus as just another failed saviour, a man doomed like himself. In his desperation, he seeks salvation through mere survival, not recognising the deeper need for redemption.

In stark contrast, the second criminal rebukes the first, acknowledging their guilt and Jesus’ innocence. He humbly admits, “We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong” (Luke 23:41). This act of recognition is key. He turns to Jesus in faith, asking, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Luke 23:42).

Here lies the essence of our devotion: one man’s despair leads to rejection, while the other’s humility opens the door to grace. Jesus responds to the second criminal with a promise, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43).

As we meditate on this passage, we are invited to examine our own responses to Jesus. Are we like the first criminal, caught in scepticism and bitterness, or do we embrace the humility of the second criminal, recognising our need for grace?

Let us pray for the courage to acknowledge our flaws and to turn to Jesus in faith, trusting in His mercy. May we also remember that it is never too late to seek Him, for His arms are always open to those who come with sincere hearts.

Lord, help me to see my need for You. May I respond with humility and faith, like the criminal who recognised Your goodness. Thank You for the promise of grace and the hope of eternal life with You. Amen.

Year 10 Camp

Year 10 Camp

Year 10 all met bright and early at Tallawong Station on Wednesday 2nd April to begin their adventure to Broken Bay Sport and Recreation Centre. Located on its own private island, getting to camp was an adventure in itself as students navigated the public transport network catching two trains and a ferry to arrive at our beautiful destination. Once we arrived and settled in, we had a fantastic three days participating in activities including archery tag, orienteering, initiative challenges and hitting the beach with fishing, paddle boarding and surf skiing. We also got acquainted with some of the ‘residents’ that call the site home and enjoyed sharing the space with bush turkeys, goannas and even an inquisitive echidna! There were many great moments during camp and students enjoyed the time away to build stronger connections with their peers and staff and they had many opportunities to develop their character, teamwork and leadership skills. I’m also pleased to report that the theme night was a hit and it was awesome to see so many “iconic groups” represented colourfully and creatively.

I want to thank all of Year 10  for their excellent attitude, outstanding behaviour and their respect for the campsite staff and general public while travelling. I also want to thank and acknowledge our RHAC staff for their care for our students and willingness to get involved in all aspects of the program.

Mr Jason Davies, Year 10 Advisor / Teacher Mathematics Faculty

Year 9 Camp

Year 9 Camp

Last week, our Year 9 students took part in their much-anticipated camp held across the Youthworks sites - Deer Park, Chaldercot, and McConnell’s in the Royal National Park. Students engaged in a range of exciting activities including sailing, crate climbing, and an adventure journey through nature. A core part of the program also involved Christian discovery sessions, encouraging reflection and personal growth. One of the highlights of the camp was the themed trivia night, where students dressed up and enjoyed a fun, competitive evening with their peers. The camp offered valuable opportunities for students to build friendships, challenge themselves, and connect with staff and each other in a supportive and vibrant environment.

"Camp this year was my favourite one yet out of the three I’ve attended at school. I really enjoyed the adventure journey, especially being out in nature and ending the day with canoeing, something I had never done before. One of my favourite memories was spending quality time with my friends during trivia night and free time, where we could hang out and also get competitive with other homerooms. We got to spend time with teachers going fishing together, it was great to see them in a different way outside of the classroom." ( Charlotte H)

Mr Fadi Sulaiman, Year 9 Year Advisor / Teacher HSIE Faculty

Year 8 Camp

Year 8 Camp

"Camp this year was such a fun and memorable experience! One of the best parts was bushwalking in the Blue Mountains—the views were amazing, and it was nice to be out in nature. I also loved chilling by the campfire with my friends, roasting marshmallows and just chatting.

Back at the cabin, we’d stay up sharing stories about our day and asking how everyone was going. It was such a good connection making us all feel closer. The movie dress-up night was definitely my favourite highlight! I dressed up as a movie character, and me, Brianna, and Minjone went as the Men in Black. We had so much fun getting ready and just being silly together.

Overall, it was an awesome camp filled with laughs, memories, and good times with friends. (Rileen S)

"Camp was honestly one of the best experiences ever. I absolutely loved the movie character night. It was so fun to be able to see everyone in characters from our favourite movies and shows. We all had a lot of fun dressing up and trying to get our costumes together. The 3 hour bush walk was such a workout but it was so great to be able to talk to friends and explore the bush. My key highlight was sitting around the campfire together and roasting marshmallows. We had such a good view of the stars and mountains. We also all stepped out of our comfort zone and tried new fun and terrifying activities. From crate climbing, zip lining and challenging activities, every single one of us tried our best. We all got closer together and camp was an experience I’ll always remember." (Pearl T)

"Year 8 Camp was an incredible opportunity for us to challenge ourselves, strengthen our friendships, and allow us to utilise on RHAC’s values of Character, Care & Courage through Christ. Through activities like high ropes, laser tag, and bushwalking, we were pushed out of our comfort zones and encouraged to develop further teamwork skills, support one another, and do things we’ve never done before. Camp also gave us the chance to connect with classmates we wouldn’t usually sit next to or talk to, whether that was during the “Bush Olympics” on the last day (my group won!), cabin time, or just having meals with each other. By the end of camp, we came back not only with great memories, but also with stronger bonds and a better sense of what it means to work as a team and be a leader." (Rastin S)

Year 7 Camp

Year 7 Camp

In Week 9, Year 7 students set off on an unforgettable three-day camp at AGH in Douglas Park. The trip was filled with exciting outdoor activities, team-building games, and plenty of opportunities to make new friends. From high ropes and bushwalks to riding the skies and a disco, students challenged themselves and bonded as a cohort.

The camp encouraged everyone to step out of their comfort zones and work together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. One of the highlights was the dress-up disco, where students danced the night away alongside a banana, a flamingo, and a few very cool Hawaiian shirts!

The camp was a fantastic opportunity for students to bond, make new friends, and create memories that will last a lifetime. A big thank you to the teachers and staff who helped make the experience so special!

THINK TANK Day inspires creativity & collaboration for Stages 1-3 students

On Tuesday, 8th April, selected students from Stages 1-3 participated in the first THINK TANK Day of the year.

Each term, independent schools from the local area meet to challenge and enrich their high potential students in a variety of areas. This term, students in Stage 1 enhanced their skills in developing and sharing various styles of drama. Students in Stage 2 used representation of natural materials to create their own original artwork and students in Stage 3 developed their skills in sharing ideas in an effective way as well as formulating high-quality, convincing arguments to present when debating. All students worked with peers from other schools and thoroughly enjoyed their day.

  • Stage 1: Georgia B, Freddy O, Jace U, Alexis M
  • Stage 2: Tiara M, Neil S, Anam M
  • Stage 3: Nibaana K, Lara A, Harper P, Amelia L, Gweneth S, Ethan X, Charlotte R

Stage 3 debaters tackle tough topics with exceptional arguments & team spirit

Stage 3 debaters tackle tough topics with exceptional arguments & team spirit

Last week, our Stage 3 debating teams had their first debates, preparing their arguments in just one week while Year 6 was at camp. I couldn’t be more proud of how they embraced the challenge! Both teams tackled tricky topics as the negative side and presented exceptional arguments backed by thorough research.

Team 1 (Hritvik, Elyas, Methuki, Kallie and Akira) did a wonderful job responding to the topic all public spaces should provide free drinking water” as the negative team, arguing the costs, water waste and risk of bacterial spread.

Team 2 (Chase, Reyansh, Ansh, Anya and Connor) presented fantastic arguments for the negative view of “Restaurants should be required to provide nutritional information on all menus” such as removal of culinary enjoyment, risk of inaccurate information, costs of analysing nutritional information.

Both teams handled their defeats with grace and are excited to tackle new topics, hopeful they'll be on the affirmative side next time.

Junior School Easter Chapel Service

Junior School Easter Chapel Service

This week, our Junior School community had the opportunity to gather together for our Easter Chapel. It was a special time together as we read from the Bible, encouraged one another through song, heard from the Stage 3 choir and prayed together.

As we thought again about the wonderful news of Easter, we learnt that God shows us what love is by sending Jesus to die for the sins of the world.

“Here is what love is. It is not that we loved God. It is that He loved us and sent his Son to give his life to pay for our sins.” 1 John 4:10

May all our Junior School families have a chance to reflect this Easter on the wonderful news of God’s love for us, seen in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Preparing for holiday reading and Premier's Reading Challenge

All students in Years K-6 are well on their way to completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Each week in library lessons, students spend a portion of the time reading and recording their books on the website. This can also be done at home (Years 3-6 only, K-2 is completed by Mrs Darwall at school). Student login details are in their diaries. As we prepare for the holiday time, working on completing the challenge could be something you would like to encourage your child/ren to do in their quite times.

SORA Book Reading App

Below are the details for the SORA reading app previously mentioned in the newsletters.

The app has a large range of both audio and ebooks. We have set the app to only allow appropriate texts for PreK-6 for our students to use. The app works on a borrowing system much like borrowing the physical book. After borrowing, students have access to the book for a period of 2 weeks at which time they can renew for longer if no-one else has it on reserve.

If parents are unsure if a book their child would like to read is at an appropriate content level, they can check if it is available on SORA, if it is not, there is a good chance the book is not suitable for younger readers.

Each book on SORA has an information section that includes recommended age.

To log in, students need their school email address and password. You can log in via the web or download the free app to your device.

SORA is an award-winning digital reading app that empowers K-12 students to discover age-appropriate ebooks, audiobooks and more from their school library. Backed by the largest, most diverse catalogue of digital books available to schools, Sora provides students with access to curriculum titles and leisure reading. The app is available to download to your device and with the student school email address and password, our students are able to use the app for free.

Changes to Music Ensembles

To accommodate the significant growth in our music program over the past few years, we have restructured some of our ensembles:

  • JS Choir , previously for Years 3-6, has now been divided into two stage-based groups:
    • Stage 2 Choir (Years 3-4) will rehearse with Mrs Watson on Tuesday mornings
    • Stage 3 Choir (Years 5-6) will rehearse with Mrs Morris Wednesday mornings
  • String Ensemble was divided into two groups last year. We have renamed these groups to help distinguish between them:
    • Dolce Strings (Years 1-3) will rehearse with Ms Murphy on Tuesday mornings in the K Space/Library
    • Vivace Strings (Years 4-6) will rehearse with Ms Sawyer on Thursday mornings in the Drama Space (next to the TLC)

These changes will allow our conductors to better cater for the musical needs of all students in these ensembles and provide more opportunities for them to perform at College and external events.

The above change to the choirs means that for now there will not be a distinct auditioned ‘Cantabile’ choir. We will proceed with the arrangements above for Terms 1 and 2. I plan to reassess this change based on feedback from our conductors, students and parents and the availability of staff and rehearsals spaces in through the course of the year.

Re-Enrolment and Attendance

Unless you have notified us otherwise, students who participated in an ensemble last year will be automatically re-enrolled. If your child is not continuing in an ensemble this year, please email Mr Tyler Barnes ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible to update our records and avoid being charged an ensemble fee.

A reminder that punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to the success of our ensembles. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal, please notify the ensemble conductor in advance.

Private Music Lessons

For families interested in private tuition, further details and application forms can be found in the Private Music Tuition Brochure or contact Mrs Neralie Want ( [email protected] ).

Ensemble Fees

The ensemble fee structure for 2025 remains the same:

  • $75.00 per student per semester ($37.50 per term), regardless of the number of ensembles joined.
  • Sibling discount: $50.00 per child per semester ($25.00 per term) for the second and subsequent children.
  • The Stage 1 Choir is exempt from ensemble fees.

These fees help cover the costs of external conductors, accompanists, new repertoire, and performance opportunities.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of music at the College and appreciate your ongoing support in fostering a vibrant and enriching music program.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We look forward to a wonderful year of music-making!

Hills Relay for Life - Sat 17 - Sun 18 May

Hills Relay for Life - Sat 17 - Sun 18 May

Cancer Council's Hills Relay For Life is coming up early next term, on Saturday the 17th to Sunday the 18th of May , and, as always, our RHAC community is getting involved to help fight against cancer.

Last year, our RHAC community raised over $16,000, which was an amazing achievement. This year, we have upped our goal to $18,000 and we are already over halfway there! With a generous donation from Coca-Cola CCEP and the incredible effort of our College staff and students, we have so far raised a total of $11,553! This means we have helped provide 7,220 kids with Sunsmart education, 177 calls to trained cancer professionals and 96 days of a PhD student's world-class research.

To find out more, watch the video below on our RHAC socials!

Our RHAC Drumline is opening the Relay again this year and our RHAC Community stall will be selling Hot 2-Minute Noodles and soft drinks. Everyone is welcome to come along and join in as we fight against cancer.

A colouring-in competition has just kicked off in Junior school, featuring our RHAC Relay mascot, Relay Ralph. Junior School Leaders, Holly and Andrew, were excited to share this colouring competition with the Stage 3-6 students at their assembly last Tuesday and students began taking them home late last week. You can download the colouring-in page below.

Next term in Senior School, we have plans for a jelly bean guessing competition , a Ralph 'Round RHAC guessing game and a BBQ fundraiser to get our Senior students involved.

If you would like to join us on the day, or show your support as we walk the Relay For Life, you can visit the RHAC Community Relay For Life page below.

I am delighted to introduce myself as the new President of the Parents and Family Committee! My name is Sneha Pandey , and I am honoured to be working alongside such a passionate and dedicated team of parents to support our school community. A heartfelt thank you to Matt Perry, our past president and a dear friend, for your incredible leadership, commitment, and guidance. You've left a strong foundation for us to build on, and we deeply appreciate all you've done.

As a parent myself, I understand the importance of fostering a strong partnership between home and school, and I look forward to working with all of you to make this a fantastic year packed with events to raise funds for the school.

Thank you to our continuing Executive Committee members for your ongoing dedication, and a warm welcome to our newest committee members – we're excited to have you on board!

As we move into Term 2, I’m excited to share a few events and initiatives we have planned. First up, we are gearing up for a special celebration of Mother’s Day. This is always a wonderful opportunity to honour the amazing mothers and mother figures in our lives.

Lastly, your involvement is always welcome, whether through volunteering, participating in events, or simply supporting our efforts. Together, we can continue to build a warm and welcoming community for our children. Here is a QR Code on what you can do to support the P&F.

Thank you for your continued support to the P&F. I have some very big shoes to fill, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to serve in this role. I look forward to meeting many of you in the coming months and hearing your ideas.

Kind regards,
