A message from Principal Hartley

A message from Principal Hartley

It was a delight to see our new and existing students return to school this week. I enjoyed mixing with new and eager Year 7 students and their parents in front of the clock tower at the beginning of their first day of Senior School. I dropped in to see how our youngest students in Pre K and Kindergarten were settling into their new environment. Initially, I tried not to make myself too visible because starting school at the beginning of the year when you are so young can be daunting, particularly if there is a tall, strange man (whom they will later find out is the Principal!) standing near them. However, it turned out that I did not need to be too concerned about my presence because so many students seemed quite at ease in their new environment.

Starting school in other year groups e.g. Year 4, Year 9 or Year 11 can be uniquely challenging because only a small number join us in these year groups, which can feel lonely for a new student. I trust that students who started in one of these non-major intake years finished their first week at RHAC feeling like they belong and went home with a smile on their face.

Over the last week, I also tried to catch up with some of our existing students. It was great to hear that they enjoyed their summer break and that they are looking forward to a positive year ahead at school.

While I observed that RHAC has had a very positive start to the 2025 school year, I recognise that for a handful of our much loved students returning to school can be a challenge for one reason or another. I trust that RHAC staff have made a helpful contribution to care for and support these students.

Commencing a school year is an ideal time to remind everyone in our school community of the RHAC vision. A vision is an understandable statement of where the school is going and what it will look like when we get there. Our vision is:

To be a united Christian learning community committed to taking opportunities, serving and achieving.

rhac.nsw.edu.au/about/vision-and-values

Schools are fundamentally about learning. To achieve our vision we have 5 teaching and learning principles that inform teaching practice.

  • Explicit instruction
  • High expectations
  • Effective feedback
  • Data informed practice
  • Relational teaching

These principles are explained on the College website , and can also be found on posters in classrooms, student diaries/handbooks and the Parent and Carer Handbook .

Each year, the RHAC leadership team adopt one of these principles as a theme for the year. Last year the theme was explicit instruction. In practical terms this means that teachers outline what students will be learning in a lesson, explain new content and concepts in a way that students will understand and give students opportunities to memorise new information and practice new skills.

To achieve this effectively, a significant proportion of learning is through quiet, individual student work. While there are some opportunities for pairing and group work, particularly in more practical subjects, this is not the main way that students learn. We do not support an open learning model with many students sitting at roundtables in a large room doing collaborative tasks. RHAC believes that students need to be able to make eye contact with their teacher when the teacher is speaking.

The 2025 theme is relational teaching . I was very thankful for the large number of parents who came to our annual launch night on Wednesday where I spoke about this theme and shared some practical advice to parents. I look forward to writing about relational teaching in future newsletters.

Library News - Scholastic Orders, Premier's Reading Challenge, Book Covering 'Crew'

Welcome back to 2025! We were very excited to welcome students into the K and H Block libraries this week for their first library lesson of the year.

This year, we welcome Mrs Darwall to the library teaching staff. Mrs Darwall will be teaching classes for students in Kindergarten to Year 3.

Students will now know their library day and teacher, and will commence borrowing from next week. In order to borrow books from our library, students need a College library bag – available from the College Shop . Please ensure your child’s library bag is clearly labelled with their name and class.

The library in H block is open for students in Years 3-6 use each morning from 8:45am-9:00am and during Break 1 every day. Students can borrow and return books in their library lesson or in these alternate opening times.

Scholastic Book Orders

All classes Years 1-6 have now received the latest brochure. Kindergarten parents are also welcome to order from the brochure sent home with the older students or view the online brochure.

Orders for this edition close on Friday 21st February.

Order your books today

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will again be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. During library lessons, K-2 students will engage with the required number of books as part of their teacher read lessons, whilst students in Years 3-6 will read their books independently. The challenge does not start until later this term but students are encouraged to start reading and recording from next week. During their library lesson next week each student will receive a recording sheet and their log in details to glue into their diary.

Book Covering

Library staff have been busy preparing many new books for our students, as part of this process, each new book needs to be covered in contact or plastic to protect the books allowing them to last longer in the hands of the many students who use them. We could not have completed this task without the assistance of our wonderful parent volunteer “Covering Crew” who covered in excess of 1,000 books last year! We are so very thankful for the help and will again need help this year.

If you would like to join the crew (or continue) could you please email me with your contact details.

JS Music Ensemble Information & Private Music Lessons

JS Music Ensemble Information & Private Music Lessons

Welcome to Term 1, 2025! I hope everyone has had a restful and enjoyable holiday. The Music team is excited for another fantastic year of music-making and looks forward to working with our students and families once again.

Please see below some key information regarding music ensembles and private music tuition as we begin the year.

Music Ensemble Rehearsals

Please refer to the JS Music Ensembles Information linked below for rehearsal days, times and locations.

Download timetable

The following ensembles will commence rehearsals from Week 2 :

  • Intermediate Band – Monday 10th February
  • Stage 3 Choir (see below) – Wednesday 12th February
  • Performance Band – Wednesday 12th February
  • Vivace Strings (Years 4-6) – Thursday 13th February

The following ensembles will commence from Week 3 :

  • Beginner Band – Monday 17th February
  • Dolce Strings (Years 1-3) – Tuesday 18th February
  • Stage 2 Choir – Tuesday 18th February

Stage 1 Choir will commence in Week 5 (Monday, 3rd March) . More details regarding how to join this ensemble will be communicated by Mrs Barnett.

Changes to Music Ensembles

To accommodate the significant growth in our music program over the past few years, we have restructured some of our ensembles:

  • JS Choir , previously for Years 3-6, has now been divided into two stage-based groups:
    • Stage 2 Choir (Years 3-4) will rehearse with Mrs Watson on Tuesday mornings
    • Stage 3 Choir (Years 5-6) will rehearse with Mrs Morris Wednesday mornings
  • String Ensemble was divided into two groups last year. We have renamed these groups to help distinguish between them:
    • Dolce Strings (Years 1-3) will rehearse with Ms Murphy on Tuesday mornings in the K Space/Library
    • Vivace Strings (Years 4-6) will rehearse with Ms Sawyer on Thursday mornings in the Drama Space (next to the TLC)

These changes will allow our conductors to better cater for the musical needs of all students in these ensembles and provide more opportunities for them to perform at College and external events.

The above change to the choirs means that for now there will not be a distinct auditioned ‘Cantabile’ choir. We will proceed with the arrangements above for Terms 1 and 2. I plan to reassess this change based on feedback from our conductors, students and parents and the availability of staff and rehearsals spaces in through the course of the year.

Percussion Ensemble

Junior School Percussion Ensemble auditions will be held on Thursday 13th February during Break 1 in the Music Space. Students should have at least 12 months of private drum/percussion lessons and be able to read percussion music. Please contact Mr. Barnes for more information.

Re-Enrolment and Attendance

Unless you have notified us otherwise, students who participated in an ensemble last year will be automatically re-enrolled. If your child is not continuing in an ensemble this year, please email Mr Tyler Barnes ( [email protected] ) as soon as possible to update our records and avoid being charged an ensemble fee.

A reminder that punctuality and consistent attendance are essential to the success of our ensembles. If a student is unable to attend a rehearsal, please notify the ensemble conductor in advance.

Private Music Lessons

Private music lessons will commence in Week 2 (Monday 10th February) . If you have enrolled for lessons, your tutor will contact you with scheduling details. If you have not received this information, please contact Mrs Neralie Want ( [email protected] ).

For families interested in private tuition, further details and application forms can be found in the Private Music Tuition Brochure.

Ensemble Fees

The ensemble fee structure for 2025 remains the same:

  • $75.00 per student per semester ($37.50 per term), regardless of the number of ensembles joined.
  • Sibling discount: $50.00 per child per semester ($25.00 per term) for the second and subsequent children.
  • The Stage 1 Choir is exempt from ensemble fees.

These fees help cover the costs of external conductors, accompanists, new repertoire, and performance opportunities.

We are looking forward to another exciting year of music at the College and appreciate your ongoing support in fostering a vibrant and enriching music program.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We look forward to a wonderful year of music-making!

We would also like to welcome Mrs Fiona Morris who will be taking on the Senior Vocal Group this year. Mrs Morris is an experienced classroom Music teacher, vocal tutor and conductor. Music Camp

Our annual Senior School Music Camp will take place from Wednesday 26 February – Friday 28 February (Term 1, Week 4) . Music Camp brings together musicians in Years 7-12 from various music ensembles for three days of intensive rehearsals, tutorials and sectionals.

Students from Concert Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Giocoso Strings will work with their conductors and other invited guests to hone their technical skills and rehearse repertoire for upcoming performances and festivals. Music Camp is also an opportunity to foster a sense of community amongst our musicians and for students to build relationships with one another, especially across year groups.

Music Camp is an important part of the College’s music program and it is expected that every member of the ensembles listed above will attend.

An information letter regarding Music Camp was sent out (Tuesday, 4th February) to parents of students who are already in enrolled in one of the above ensembles.
